0:00In 24.
0:013, Tableau have announced Tableau Cloud Manager.
0:04Now in order to understand this, you have to understand a few things, so I'm going to try and explain it.
0:09as fast as I possibly can.
0:11There are two ways of engaging with a Tableau platform, Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server.
0:16What's the difference?
0:17Well, Tableau Cloud is managed by Tableau.
0:20It's a hosted capability, whereas Tableau Server is self-hosted.
0:24That means your IT organization
0:26deploy and manage and look after and upgrade Tableau Server.
0:30How do you know which one you're on?
0:32If you head to Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server, you go to the top little sort of pane up here and you select about Tableau
0:40It should say tableau cloud, but but in a recent change, um whoever's changing this terminology, I think put the wrong thing here.
0:49They put Tableau Server.
0:50version 24.
0:513.
0:51Now there is no 24.
0:533.
0:53That's how I know this is a mistake.
0:55Uh there's only 24.
0:572.
0:57So this should say Tableau Cloud if you're using Tableau Cloud.
1:00The other way to know that you're using Tableau Cloud
1:03is that you'll have a pod.
1:05A pod is essentially an instance the Tableau Cloud is running on essentially the region.
1:10So 10 AX
1:11refers to Arizona in the AWS naming conventions.
1:16So in this case, this Tableau Cloud site that I'm on
1:19is based in America in Arizona.
1:21Okay.
1:22The other thing you'll know is up here at the top it will say online.
1:25tableau.
1:26com with the name of the pod in the front and then site and then the name of your site.
1:30You typically have to type this in when you log in
1:31So that's how you know if you're on Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server.
1:35What has happened in 24.
1:373 is Tableau have announced something called Tableau Cloud Manager.
1:41And this is something that replicates a capability that existed in Tableau Server.
1:45In essence, what you could do in Tableau Server is create something called a site.
1:50And the site is a bit of a conceptual thing in the Tableau platform.
1:54It essentially creates separation between environments.
1:58So I'll give you an example.
1:59Let's say you need to deploy Tableau in your organization, but the finance team wants to have a completely separate Tableau server or Tableau setup.
2:09to the whole rest of the organization.
2:10Now it would be pretty frustrating if what that meant is that you'd have to go out and buy another server and deploy that inside of your organization if you're using Tableau Server.
2:20Well, Tableau sites allow you to do this.
2:23A site is something that's separate, essentially.
2:25So if I have two sites on my Tableau Server instance, they would not know about each other's data sources, each other's users.
2:31They could even have
2:33different authentication mechanisms and even different license splits.
2:36That's how they work.
2:37And so what Tableau have done is they've brought this capability to Tableau Cloud because up until now you could only have one site
2:45with Tableau Cloud.
2:46It was kind of like a one-to-one relationship.
2:48So one customer, one site.
2:50And actually the reality was is that's not the case.
2:53So let's dig into this a little bit more
2:56If I go into this uh image that I've loaded up from the marketing, I don't have access to uh three Tableau cloud sites, so I can't show you what it looks like.
3:03But if you've got Tableau Server and you're an admin, you can actually go to an interface that looks similar to this in Tableau Server.
3:10And essentially there are just a few key things you can do.
3:12So you can create a new site.
3:14Obviously, there's a very simple interface for you to do that.
3:17You can additionally give certain resources, things like licenses.
3:21storage and even enable them to have different types of authentication and so that is all the capability that sits inside of what's called the cloud manager.
3:29Now the cloud manager
3:31Allows you to see all your different sites.
3:33Whereas before in Tableau Cloud you just had the settings page and that was it.
3:36So that's sort of what I'm showing you here.
3:37It's just an image
3:38I don't have access to it, but if you go to Tableau's press release, they have a pretty good uh uh article that explains it.
3:44Now the thing that I find really interesting here is I had no idea
3:49Just how many organizations need this capability?
3:52Now, I had the assumption that you know a company that needs multiple Tableau Cloud instances probably has you know a handful.
3:59I'm talking maybe five or six or seven
4:02Tableau cloud instances and yes, they probably have to purchase those all separately, and now they can bring them all under one roof uh to how to kind of manage them in one place.
4:12But what I didn't know is there are actually many, many, many companies that need not just, you know, a a handful, not just ten.
4:20considerably more Tableau Cloud instances and for lots of good reasons.
4:24And you can kind of think of a site as an artificial boundary between
4:28capabilities on your analytics platform.
4:30And if you think of organizations, there could be things like regulation, there could be things like governance that are dictating that boundaries.
4:37are enforced in a very representable way and sites give you that ability to be able to do that.
4:42You might sort of, you know, suggest someone goes to use the project structure to do this.
4:47And if they're really good with permissions, they could replicate something that works
4:51But sites give you that absolute hard wall.
4:54There is nothing that goes in between the sites.
4:57And they can share resources and you can even stipulate
4:59and what resources are shared and what resources are sort of delegated down to each environment.
5:04And so here um the thing to call out is that Tableau Cloud standard only has up to three sites.
5:09This is the
5:10standard edition of table cloud tablet cloud enterprise which i think is probably what most people have been on because tablet plus is only a new thing so tablet cloud enterprise up to 10 sites
5:20And then if you really want all the sites in the world 50 sites or more, then you have to go up here.
5:25Now actually it's not 50 sites or more, it's up to 50 sites.
5:28The reason I say more.
5:30It's because in talking to a few people at Tableau, turns out there's some companies that have considerably more than 50 sites in Tableau Cloud.
5:38Crazy.
5:38Anyway, that's the update.
5:40Thanks for watching.
5:41I'll see you in the next one.
