Trulip: governed AI dashboards built on Tableau by Infotopics

Vibe-coded dashboards are the new Excel hell - Trulip is Infotopics' answer to AI-generated analytics that stays governed, auditable and still plugs into Tableau.

Watch on YouTube
  • Trulip lets you embed existing Infotopics extensions like Super Tables outside Tableau via an 'embed now' button, creating a standalone analytics view
  • The Visi AI assistant can generate full dashboards, HTML-based KPI cards, and even custom Tableau viz extensions from a single prompt, then you can still manually adjust settings
  • Generated Tableau extensions come with built-in settings, interactivity, tooltips and write-back support out of the box, because they're built on Infotopics' existing extension framework rather than one-shot vibe-coded code
  • Every AI action has a full trace showing prompts and tool calls for transparency and auditability, which matters for regulated industries
  • Trulip supports MCP so you can query it headlessly from tools like ChatGPT, and it works with local LLMs for on-premises, data-sovereign deployments

Trulip is a new AI-powered analytics platform from Infotopics, built on their years of Tableau extension work, that lets you generate dashboards, KPI cards and even custom Tableau extensions from natural-language prompts while keeping everything governed, traceable and still interoperable with Tableau.

Tim talks with Merlin and Klaus from Infotopics, long-time Tableau extension builders (Super Tables, write-back tools) who built Trulip in response to customers vibe-coding ungoverned HTML dashboards outside Tableau. The demo walks through the platform from existing extensions through to AI-generated dashboards and extensions.

The Breakdown

Why it exists 4:39

  • Why Infotopics built Trulip 4:39

Customers were already extending Tableau heavily and increasingly wanted AI-built analytics, but were resorting to vibe-coded HTML files scattered across file shares with no governance. Trulip is their attempt to give people the speed of AI generation inside a secure, structured platform rather than ad hoc code.

  • The vibe-coding problem it solves 7:01

Generic AI chat tools can one-shot a dashboard or chart, but you have no guarantee it will keep working as platforms or data sources change, and no audit trail. Trulip's extensions are built and tested products, not one-off generated code, so they survive version and security changes.

Building with AI 8:28

  • Embedding existing extensions standalone 8:28

You can take an existing Infotopics extension, such as Super Tables, and use an embed option to spin it up as a standalone analytics view outside Tableau, connecting it directly to a data source rather than needing a Tableau workbook. This reuses proven, tested extension code rather than rebuilding from scratch.

  • Prompting dashboards and KPI cards into existence 12:21

Within the platform you can ask the Visi AI assistant to generate dashboard components — KPI grids, charts, HTML-based cards — from a single prompt, and it understands the underlying data and the analytics engine's capabilities. After generation you can still manually adjust formatting, layout and chart settings, so AI output is a starting point, not a final fixed artefact.

  • One prompt, a full approved dashboard 15:27

You can describe an entire dashboard in one prompt, including desired chart types and focus areas; the assistant proposes a plan you approve before it builds the whole thing. Once built, you retain full manual control to resize, undo or drill into individual charts and tweak specific elements like corner styling without re-prompting everything.

Core platform mechanics 23:10

  • Chart types, calculations and extension logic 23:10

The platform includes native chart types plus a library of extensions for charts Tableau doesn't natively support, and it supports calculation features like date granularity, percent-of-total and running totals directly against the underlying database via SQL, not something exclusive to Tableau's own engine.

  • Generating custom Tableau extensions with AI 26:38

Trulip Studio lets you prompt the AI to build a brand-new Tableau extension from scratch — for example an interactive map with custom shapes — and because it's built on Infotopics' existing extension framework, the output comes with a settings panel, tooltips, interactivity and governance baked in, not a fragile one-shot script. You still iterate conversationally or by hand to refine colours, spacing and labels, and the extension must be published back before it's reusable elsewhere.

Governance and reach 34:11

  • Security, whitelisting and write-back by design 34:11

Generated extensions run inside Trulip's authentication and security layer, with code scanning after generation and an option to whitelist specific charting libraries you trust. The AI can also generate write-back functionality in a prompt or two because the underlying write-back capability already exists in Infotopics' toolset, rather than needing to be invented live.

  • MCP for headless queries, including outside Tableau 37:08

Every Trulip API call is exposed as a tool call via MCP, so you can query the platform directly from a tool like ChatGPT without opening Trulip itself, and it will reason about which data engine and query approach to use. This also means Trulip can operate as its own analytics platform independent of Tableau, while still integrating with Tableau's virtual data sources for customers who want both.

  • Full AI trace for auditability 43:15

Every AI action logs the prompts and tool calls that produced it, giving a deterministic, repeatable trace of how an answer or dashboard was built — important for regulated industries like insurance or finance that need to justify an analysis after the fact.

  • On-premises and local LLM support ahead 51:21

Trulip is being built so organisations can self-host it, including running local LLMs instead of OpenAI or Anthropic, specifically to address data sovereignty needs in regulated industries. A stable, secure release plus insight-mining and personalised dashboard subscription features are planned as the platform matures toward launch.

Worth Knowing
  • Hand-crafted extensions like Super Tables are not themselves AI-generated — Infotopics deliberately kept that core 'real craft' separate from the vibe-coded layer so it survives platform and version changes.
  • Some generated extensions still need manual iteration (e.g. map label positions, encoding) — the demo shows this isn't always a perfect one-shot result.
  • Write-back and some advanced features draw on years of prior Infotopics engineering rather than being newly invented for Trulip, so capability depth varies by feature.
  • At time of recording the dashboard builder was still in preview and the platform was pre-launch, with security hardening and on-prem support still in progress.
Use It When

Reach for this when your organisation already uses Tableau but wants to let people build dashboards or extensions with AI prompts without losing governance, auditability or a stable platform underneath — rather than letting people vibe-code standalone HTML files that nobody can trace or maintain.

How this Rollup was made provenance & method

A Rollup is drafted by AI from the video's transcript, then reviewed and edited by Tim. Everything used to produce this one is listed below (the model, the exact prompt, and the source video), so the process is transparent and reproducible.
