Vlog #6: Data Night Out & Iron Viz, Conference Day 3 (Tableau conference 2016) #data16
Day three brought Iron Viz, the Data Night Out, and a Tableau Lab that let me give feedback straight to the developers building the product.
- The Tableau Lab let attendees see in-progress product features and give direct feedback to the developers building them
- Talking to developers revealed how the intended use of features like mobile favourites can differ from how users actually adopt them, which matters when those features get enhanced
- Curtis Harris was crowned the 2016 Iron Viz champion
- Being willing to change your session schedule mid-day, or skip a session for something more valuable like the Lab, gets more out of a conference
0:00Good morning, it's day three and firstly
0:04yesterday, yesterday was like nothing else.
0:08The three year vision from Tableau,
0:10developers on stage and they were just
0:13showcasing feature after feature after
0:16product after product.
0:17It was nuts and then the sessions during
0:19the day, wow those were great too.
0:22So yesterday probably ranks right up at the
0:24top as one of the best days I've had in
0:26conference.
0:27That includes Seattle and Las Vegas. So all
0:30out amazing yesterday.
0:32So that means today's got a hard act to
0:34follow. Now what today has running for it
0:37is the party, the day to night out.
0:38So that's a party that Tableau put on every
0:40single year, midway through conference.
0:43A good way of having fun, socializing and
0:45just getting together with all your friends
0:47and the community.
0:49I've also got a full day of sessions set
0:52out so that's going to be cool.
0:55Getting more technical today, looking a lot
0:56of the developer track.
0:58And then this morning we've actually got
1:00the keynote from Shankar Vendantum from NPR
1:03.
1:03So these keynotes are amazing. These are
1:05guest speakers that come from other sort of
1:07science and technology backgrounds.
1:10And some authors sometimes and essentially
1:12they just talk about data in a really
1:14exciting way.
1:15And some of the speakers in the past have
1:16been absolutely amazing.
1:18I personally love Neil deGrasse Tyson so I
1:20'm hoping Shankar delivers this morning.
1:24The keynote is actually in about 50 minutes
1:27and I'm still in the Airbnb flat so I
1:30really need to get going.
1:31Otherwise I'm going to get an awful seat.
1:33Today's going to be jam packed. I'm going
1:35to try and record as much of it as I
1:37possibly can and I'll see you soon.
1:39Also I completely forgot, this guy is
1:42President of the United States.

4:25Okay, so the day to night out was great. It
4:28's 10 o'clock
4:29I think it's just ending but I left a
4:31little bit early because I've got a session
4:33first thing tomorrow
4:34that I want to be sharp for but Tableau did
4:37it again. They put on a great party
4:39Festival atmosphere great setup great food
4:43great music obviously great people all
4:46together in an amazing
4:47Sort of space that really lends itself to
4:50that it was great
4:51They even had a roller disco inside the
4:54event center and they even had some smoked
4:56barbecue stuff being done outside
4:58And they did some whole sort of setup with
5:01these colored trees
5:02The gig was awesome. They got the band was
5:06really energetic really lively the
5:08highlight today was the
5:09Tableau lab it was just amazing so
5:11basically the Tableau lab was this setup
5:14where they had
5:15devs around the room who all build
5:18different parts of the products or are
5:19developing different parts of the products
5:21and
5:21they basically had
5:23Something to show you and they'd show it to
5:26you and then having seen it you then get to
5:28give feedback and
5:29Showing it to you before getting the
5:31feedback provoked you to think about the
5:34tool in a really really interesting way
5:36So I really enjoyed it. I gave lots of
5:38feedback about dashboards actions filters
5:41Reference lines I even got some business
5:43cards to continue the discussion later on
5:46so absolutely loved it. I also went to the
5:51Expo Hall Expo Hall one and looked at the
5:53mobile development stuff there having had
5:56that conversation and again
5:57lots of great feedback about rolling out
5:59Tableau mobile for enterprise a few tweaks
6:02They can make to it to make a little bit
6:04easier to work with
6:05And also some of their thinking because you
6:07see the thing is when Tableau build a
6:10product the developer is
6:11In in the tool they have a vision for how
6:14the tool should be used
6:16But of course we all get the product and we
6:18follow the user manual and sometimes
6:20between the developer the designer
6:23The user manual and you playing with it the
6:27actual intention of the tool
6:29changes and so for example
6:31favorites in the mobile app now I
6:35Typically use them to show people an easy
6:38way to develop their own custom home pages
6:42Having had the discussion with the
6:43developer today. That's not what they
6:45actually intended it to be useful
6:47They intended it to be used for an easy way
6:50to collect your favorite reports. No matter
6:52what it is
6:53So it's really interesting to have that
6:55discussion and whilst that's essentially
6:57the same thing
6:58The sentiment is very slightly different
7:00and if you were to then enhance that
7:02further then you could end up
7:03enhancing a
7:06Sentiment that people don't necessarily
7:08connect with so anyway. I was just amazing
7:11I mean that's that's a geek talk right
7:12there, but
7:13It was really cool. I loved it. Absolutely
7:15loved it. Please do that again
7:17In fact, I'd love a Tableau lab to be
7:19online and just constantly having stuff in
7:21beta and now for and just doing stuff all
7:23the
7:23Time I know Zen's do this, but I'd love
7:26that to be like a thing for the wider the
7:28community as well
7:29I think I'll be awesome
7:31last but not least
7:33The sessions today. I had a bit of a had to
7:35change my schedule a little bit
7:37So sometimes you choose a schedule and you
7:40realize oh, no, this this is this isn't
7:43just this isn't just right
7:44So I basically halfway through the day. I
7:46just changed my schedule. So I changed my
7:48first
7:48Session anyway, because I had to and then
7:51the second one I changed I just went to a
7:54different talk all together
7:55Had lunch then in the afternoon. I skipped
7:58a session to go to the tableau lab because
8:00that will have seemed more valuable
8:02I'd actually seen what I needed to see that
8:06made the second session not so worthwhile
8:08And then having had that session
8:11I
8:11Basically spend the afternoon talking to
8:13devs
8:13That was more valuable to me and then last
8:15but not least I got to see vis alerts and
8:17vis alerts was great
8:18So all in all I got to see quite a few cool
8:21things
8:21Really really loved it. So
8:24Amazing day wasn't quite as good as day one
8:28the keynote and devs on stage really really
8:30topped the list
8:31but
8:33given there wasn't a keep well, there was a
8:35keynote and
8:35In terms of the day starts out tableau
8:38nailed it in terms of the tableau labs
8:40You nailed it in terms of the devs. They
8:43nailed it
8:43Just everything came together today loved
8:46it
8:46I'm not quite as good as day one the
8:49keynote and devs on stage, especially devs
8:52on stage was awesome, but
8:53What else can you ask for?
