Unified Tooltips in Tableau Desktop & Web Edit | New in Tableau 2023.2

0:00In Tableau 23.2 there's a new feature

0:02called the unified tool tips. If I go over

0:05here to the filter

0:06spain and hover over there you'll see one

0:08of those unified tool tips pop up. It's

0:10conveying additional

0:11information about the filter but to find

0:13out how these work across not just the

0:15filter spain but

0:16all the other shelves as ever let's get

0:18stuck in. Okay so you've seen it work here

0:21in the filters

0:21that's pretty straightforward it also works

0:24in other instances. Let's go ahead and take

0:27this

0:27sales forecast and we're just going to mess

0:29it up. We're going to make it a table

0:30calculation.

0:31Let's say quick table calculation will do

0:34let's say a moving average for why not and

0:38when I hover

0:38over this again you'll see that it now

0:40tells me what table calculation is running

0:43on that field

0:44and it kind of gives me a sentence and it

0:46shows me at the very top of the header sort

0:48of what's

0:48going on. So it's trying to give a summary

0:50to give you a sense of what's going on

0:52there without having

0:53to do this which is essentially go in

0:55select edit table calculation and open this

0:58up to see what's

0:58going on. Now this is obviously a good way

1:00to debug what's going on because you get

1:02the

1:02highlighting in the background as you can

1:05see but you can even let's say make this

1:07more complex

1:08let's stay across and then let's do one

1:10that goes down and we'll then go ahead and

1:12close this and

1:13of course you'll see here when I hover over

1:14the tool tip that description has changed

1:16so it's

1:17allow a little bit more information telling

1:19me what's going on. The other place it will

1:21be helpful

1:22is telling you when there's an error

1:23sometimes what you've had to do with errors

1:25is go into the

1:26calculation to see the error. So what I'll

1:29do here is I'll change the ship status and

1:31put it over

1:32segments so it replaces the field so you

1:34can see the ship status is there. The

1:36reason I want that

1:36there is because I'm now going to go into

1:38the ship status calculation and I'm going

1:40to break this so

1:42we're going to go ahead and just let's just

1:43create a type but let's just do that you

1:45see it comes up

1:46with an error hit apply hit okay close it

1:48you'll see that it's caused an error I have

1:50a red pill

1:50on my visualization I'd now like to see

1:53what the issue is if I go over there and

1:55hover over it it

1:56now comes up the calculations ship status

1:59is invalid if I then go into that I can

2:01edit it and

2:02I can find out what's going on so they're

2:04trying to pull more information up to

2:07essentially the

2:08cursor your cursor as you hover over these

2:10fields is now going to be able to convey

2:13information to

2:13you that is pertinent when you're working

2:16at this level at the view level at the

2:18sheet level

2:18of the particular visualization so small

2:21change but I think it means there's more to

2:24come and I'm

2:25certain that there's going to be nuances to

2:27this a little tool tip and as we start to

2:29use it more

2:30in this example it's kind of not a great

2:32example because there's not much complex

2:34things going on

2:35I haven't got sort of all these complicated

2:37filters going on so as you're using the

2:39product

2:40I'd love to know in the comments what you

2:42're seeing this little tool tip tell you

2:44that you

2:44maybe had to go digging around for in the

2:47past and that's pretty much it for this
