Testing 123
An unannounced, gloriously raw test stream where Ravi and I wrestle with chat overlays, audio levels and lighting the day before a Tableau Conference watch-along.
- Tableau is moving on-premise Server to a six-monthly update cadence while Tableau Cloud/Online stays quarterly, reportedly because a customer felt updates came too fast
- Ecamm Live lets you view and respond to the YouTube chat from within the tool itself, removing the need to juggle separate browser tabs or a janky Zoom-plus-OBS setup
- For consistent video lighting, wear a mid-tone plain t-shirt: white blows out the highlights and dark fabric introduces shadow noise
- Going live 15 minutes before an event buys you a buffer to fix problems and catch the audience as they arrive
- Conference sessions land first in the Americas time zone, then Asia, then the UK, with everything available on demand afterwards
- Going live and checking the lag0:00
- Adding Twitter handles and name bars2:49
- Testing audio over background keynote5:24
- Streamlabs chat overlay troubleshooting10:09
- Wardrobe and lighting for streaming15:42
- Persisting the chat widget across scenes17:02
- Why Ecamm Live over OBS30:15
- Plan for tomorrow's keynote stream31:35
- Tableau Server update cadence change34:49
- Finding sessions and time zones37:39
0:00Okay, we're live.
0:07Hello, testing, testing.
0:12Let's see if this is coming through on the
0:26channel.
0:30So the interesting thing is the lag has
0:33increased.
0:34So what I see in my screen and what I see
0:37on what's seemingly being broadcast, there
0:42's now a greater lag.
0:44Cool. Okay, so we are live.
0:47Nice.
0:50All right, so say something.
0:52Something.
0:54Okay.
0:55Today I had pancakes and rice. I didn't
0:57have pancakes and rice, but it's the two
0:58food stuffs that came to mind.
1:03I love this.
1:05Straight away, which is a terrible
1:06combination of food for anyone, let alone
1:08someone who's apparently meant to have a
1:12lot of herbs and spices in their cuisine.
1:19How's it coming across?
1:21Good. We have four people watching.
1:24Oh, really? Hello.
1:28Angela's online.
1:32Let's see what this looks like. There we go
1:33.
1:34Oh, look at that. Amazing.
1:36So I think for everyone who's watching, all
1:38three or four of you, thank you for tuning
1:40in.
1:41We didn't announce this that was going to
1:42happen. We're testing this for tomorrow.
1:45So this is cool.
1:48I can keep switching to them.
1:51Yeah, I was going to say the interesting
1:52thing here would be, could we get like a,
1:55you know, on Twitch, they have the fading
1:57comments?
1:58We can, we can.
1:59So in order to do that, I need something
2:02called Streamlabs.
2:04Yeah.
2:07Toby Lober, I hope I've said that correctly
2:09.
2:10Let me know if I haven't.
2:13Something I think we're going to have to
2:14learn, obviously, everyone's name correctly
2:16.
2:17Yeah, no, 100%. It's your name after all,
2:19right? Like it's a thing you should get
2:20right.
2:21Exactly, exactly.
2:23So for everyone who's joining in, we're
2:25just testing the live stream for basically
2:28the rest of this week.
2:30I am doing it on a laptop I got 48 hours
2:33ago.
2:34Ravi is doing it on a laptop he set up five
2:37minutes ago.
2:38Which we've not opened for a good three or
2:40four months.
2:42But I think it's the best one to use and
2:44most stable one to use for audio quality.
2:47The question I have got, Tim.
2:49Should we bang on Twitter handles alongside
2:51this as well underneath the...
2:53Good question. Good question.
2:55Good question.
2:57Twitter handles.
2:59Yeah, okay, I guess you like a bit of self
3:01promo.
3:02So let's see what that looks like.
3:04I mean, this is on your channel.
3:06So I'm like, I'm now trying to piggyback
3:08off your hype.
3:09So what I'll do is I'll add mine.
3:14Where do you want them though? That's the
3:15problem.
3:16Yeah, this is it. That's too intrusive at
3:19the top.
3:20Yeah.
3:22Could you put a carriage return underneath
3:24your name and then have it as one big
3:26bubble and a wide bubble?
3:28Carriage returns, Ravi. Come on.
3:31Carriage returns. I went to hit enter and
3:34...
3:34Oh no, shift does work. Okay.
3:36Oh, this is good.
3:39Does it look better? I feel like it could
3:40look better in like, it would give us a
3:43nice panel underneath us.
3:45Okay, let's see. Oh, I don't like how thick
3:48it is now. This is not good.
3:51Could you change the font size of the
3:53bottom bit?
3:55No, it's all one font, I believe.
3:59Okay.
4:00Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
4:02no.
4:03Because if you do it like as half this...
4:05Oh, hello.
4:06This is kind of working, but the scale kind
4:08of goes... I can't make it smaller than
4:10that.
4:11Oh, interesting.
4:13Can you not make the Tim smaller?
4:16I'm trying that now. I think I have to
4:19literally set this up correctly.
4:23Look what it's doing.
4:27I feel like we're live testing Ecamm live
4:30here.
4:31Yeah, that's fine. Let's just leave it as
4:33is. Let's ignore the...
4:35I will take that feedback on board and I
4:36will improve on this for tomorrow. So let
4:39me take a nap.
4:41All you need to know is Ravi and Tim, let's
4:43be honest here. That's the key.
4:46No, all you need to know is that you need
4:48fans on Twitter.
4:50So that's...
4:55All right, let's get this changed up here.
4:58So Twitter handles.
5:01I don't know why I'm doing that because my
5:02Twitter is very dead these days
5:05after being locked inside a football club.
5:11Big props to my brother. He's online.
5:13Hello.
5:15He thinks we should be doing Twitter
5:16handles.
5:20I believe that's two on one.
5:22Yeah. Where should we put this?
5:24So what I'm going to do is I'm going to
5:25fast forward to like a section of the last
5:28year's conference.
5:30So I've got a video in the background.
5:33Now to do this, so you need an animal.
5:36Let me pause this and let me ask everyone
5:37who is watching.
5:39Oh, Craig's watching as well. Hello, Craig.
5:41Hey, Craig.
5:43You're watching a very raw test run.
5:45Yeah, this is literally real time setting
5:48up stream.
5:50Let's see how the audio sounds. So let us
5:52know if we sound too loud compared to the
5:53stream, basically.
5:55So give us some live feedback.
5:58This is a guy called Frank, I believe. Is
6:03that his name?
6:03Frank. Frank will do.
6:05Frank will do.
6:07I feel like should we create Bingo?
6:11I saw that the Tableau Twitter account or
6:14the social media team had like Bingo cards
6:16for stuff to do before conference.
6:17Oh, yes.
6:18Should we do like a Tableau keynote bingo?
6:22I'd say like maybe maybe at the start of
6:23the stream, we're like, right, let's just p
6:25out stuff that we think they're going to say
6:28.
6:28So for this organization, we need to have
6:32those slides done in advance.
6:34Even more personal, more relevant.
6:37It's a lot of preparation that we are not
6:39ready for doing.
6:41And whenever people need.
6:44Yeah, I'm going to have to do the
6:45preparation.
6:49To get it integrated with the tool.
6:53OK, yeah. What would you put? We'd have to
6:56put some sort of.
6:58There's going to be some Salesforce ones
6:59that are easy to do.
7:02Ohana.
7:03Yeah.
7:04David Bounds.
7:05Classima 360.
7:06Synergy. All those kind of things.
7:10Anyone watching got any Tableau keynote b
7:12ingos, chuck them in the chat.
7:15But most importantly, we've just talked
7:17over a segment with the video in the
7:19background.
7:20How did that sound? Synergy.
7:25Definitely.
7:27Yeah, absolutely.
7:30Pineapple.
7:32Craig's on the chat about pineapple.
7:35I feel like the pineapple was possibly over
7:38used.
7:39Right.
7:41So let me pause the stream. So the way I'm
7:45doing this is I've actually got an embedded
7:46YouTube video on a separate screen because
7:49that's all I'm using doesn't doesn't let
7:50you just put a video in the URL.
7:53So I have to have a full screen running.
7:55And that's what it's actually using to play
7:58in the background, which is fun.
8:02But let's go over here.
8:05Background should be louder. Interesting.
8:07So contrary to your feedback there.
8:10Should be a bit louder. I'll add it to 42.
8:13I'll add it louder.
8:14I think it's because we stopped talking. So
8:16if I play this again.
8:17I'm often out and about. I'm not always
8:19checking Tableau or checking email.
8:21Sort of a good balance. I am on my phone
8:23and I'm always on Slack.
8:26I'm trying to figure out bringing Tableau
8:29to Slack.
8:30Now you can put your data front and center.
8:32Yeah, this makes sense. I think.
8:34Because as long as what we're saying is
8:36discernible over the audio.
8:38Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
8:40It looks like I just got an alert about the
8:41error rate in our service.
8:43Pretty happy with that. That's not better.
8:45I want the feedback. I think it's good.
8:47The image of the alert so I can see why it
8:49fired from my viewers.
8:52I think our screen position is also OK for
8:54have to do some real time moving.
8:56I'll have to do that. Quick way to build a
8:58data culture.
8:59Yeah. Then to get data right into the flow
9:00of we can keep because I usually be like
9:04the key bits.
9:05Tableau slides usually have it up and to
9:08the left.
9:09The best place we could put ourselves is
9:11the bottom right maybe.
9:13Yeah.
9:15So Craig says his connection keeps dropping
9:17out.
9:18It's yours dropping out right now. What do
9:21you see?
9:22I'm now getting a bit of ricketyness.
9:25OK. This might be me calling Virgin Media
9:28tomorrow.
9:29Yeah.
9:31Interesting.
9:34I don't think I'm doing anything else.
9:39It might be me.
9:41I might need to get an ethernet cable and
9:44run upstairs.
9:46Having to a few people. That's good to know
9:48.
9:49This is why we do this the day before.
9:52Yeah.
9:54The one time I'm going to have to tether to
9:57my phone to get 5G.
10:02Good work.
10:04We want to give you the best of Tableau.
10:06Completely in the browser.
10:07It's a bit choppy.
10:09The other thing I was thinking is in terms
10:11of the audience chat right now with your
10:15widget you've got.
10:16You click to bring them on.
10:18I click to bring them on. Exactly.
10:20We want a stream labs overlay.
10:24I know what you mean.
10:26Yeah.
10:29If I do this and bring up Chrome.
10:33So stream labs do.
10:37See what happens if I do this.
10:42What are you trying to do?
10:45I'm seeing if it makes a difference but I
10:46've just realized because of my laptop.
10:49This laptop I've got here has a grand total
10:53of two USB ports.
10:55Oh wow. You need a hub.
10:57I need a hub. Have I got a hub Tim? I've
11:01not got a hub.
11:03Okay, let me set up the stream labs thing.
11:07We get to do it on the stream so we can see
11:08if it actually works.
11:10Continue with YouTube.
11:17I'm going to have to stream to myself
11:19tomorrow.
11:21Here we go.
11:24Go to dashboard.
11:28All widgets.
11:31Chat box.
11:34Here we go.
11:38Click to show widget URL. Copy.
11:40Okay, let's try this.
11:44Let's hope this works.
11:46Stream labs.
11:51No, that's the wrong one.
11:57Right.
12:00Interesting.
12:18Cheers, Craig. I'll catch you tomorrow,
12:20hopefully.
12:21Cheers, Craig. Take it easy, mate.
12:25Interesting.
12:28I think I'm going to need to do some more
12:35extreme setup because the settings are
12:39saved.
12:40What are you thinking?
12:42Right. I think I know what's going on.
12:47Stream labs have me over a barrel here
12:50because I think I need to upgrade to get
12:53the overlay working without using their
12:55application.
12:57But that's doable.
12:59Oh, interesting. Here we go.
13:02Mark Edwards popping up there. That's gone
13:05straight in.
13:07So I feel like you need just a...
13:12We're not quite gamers, so we don't have
13:14like tons of things coming in.
13:17Yeah, exactly. I don't think we will.
13:23There you go.
13:25I set it to 20 seconds.
13:29Let's not do that. Let's keep it.
13:33Maybe like five, six minutes.
13:37The maximum is 200 seconds. So that's about
13:40as long as I can.
13:41Just about two and a half minutes.
13:43So who's willing to post another comment?
13:47Yeah, can we get some like...
13:49Where's everyone tuning in from? If
13:50everyone just says hello and says where
13:52they're coming in from, that'll probably
13:55give us enough.
13:56There you go.
13:59Good.
14:03Yeah, Tim is posting on his own stream.
14:07Nice.
14:09So this is weird. It's sort of weirdly
14:12right aligned.
14:14And then, OK, we might want to get the
14:16central line because really it's better
14:19here.
14:20Yeah, Norfolk.
14:24The enemy.
14:29As a Suffolk boy, Norfolk is lovely. It's
14:33just Norwich that I don't like.
14:35Sydney, Australia coming in. There you go.
14:37I love it.
14:39So this is kind of working, right? And they
14:41disappear as things go.
14:44So Latoya from Texas.
14:46This is good.
14:48I'm glad we're getting people in for sound
14:50checks now.
14:52Yeah, yeah. The other thing is a height
14:55differential does not represent reality.
15:00So what I need to do is bring my screen
15:03down so that I can bring the camera down so
15:07I don't look so short.
15:09So you don't look shorter than I am, which
15:11is not actually true.
15:14It's still not going to work because you're
15:16just on some other level here.
15:19Yeah, that 20 second lag you're seeing,
15:22Mark, is just YouTube.
15:24YouTube does this in general, I think.
15:27So I've set the stream to low latency, but
15:30we think there might be some issue with my
15:32own connection.
15:33So that might be what's causing the issue.
15:36I can only really troubleshoot that once
15:37the stream has ended because I don't want
15:40to kill the Wi-Fi.
15:42I feel like there's not a dress code right
15:45now. There is no coordination.
15:49It feels like that.
15:51It does.
15:53Let's see who's on.
15:54What are you wearing tomorrow, Tim?
15:56Are you wearing a Zen t-shirt or are you
15:57just going for generic data?
15:59It's a good question. Generic data.
16:01I actually like to wear these plain t-
16:02shirts to stream because of lighting,
16:05basically.
16:06So if I wear a white t-shirt, the
16:09highlights blow out.
16:12If I wear a dark t-shirt, the shadows go
16:15crazy with noise.
16:17So I have to wear something in the middle.
16:19So I bought four of the same t-shirts for
16:21making videos.
16:23To keep it simple.
16:27See, I was just going to pick one in the
16:29drawer of data t-shirts I've got and go
16:32from there.
16:34Good.
16:36You've clearly thought about this more than
16:37I have.
16:38I have to, unfortunately, because when you
16:41go to hit a video and you don't want to
16:44spend time looking at your wardrobe saying
16:46what's suitable or what's not creased.
16:49Let me shout out.
16:53Tim, when we go for the keynote and it's on
16:56the screen, because we're going to
16:58obviously do that full screen, are we then
16:59killing the comments or are we leaving the
17:01comments in?
17:02Good question.
17:03So I can add this widget to every screen.
17:06So, for example, like this view doesn't
17:09have it on, but I think it would be good to
17:11have it on in some screens.
17:13And it resets the widget every time I
17:15switch that, which is really irritating.
17:18I feel like if I had left it in here, maybe
17:23that wouldn't have happened.
17:25So Mark's saying that my mic's a bit louder
17:27than yours, but that just might be me
17:30talking louder.
17:32I can deal with that, don't worry.
17:34I can silence him a little bit more here.
17:39It's a test stream, so I've just made
17:41another chat and that's put it on every
17:44screen.
17:45And will it stay? Yes.
17:46So it stays on every screen.
17:48So what I need to do is optimise its
17:51position.
17:53But then I don't want it coming up here.
17:55So, OK, this is a bit tricky.
17:58I think on this view, if we don't have the
18:00widget, but then you will lose the previous
18:03.
18:03So what you're saying is if we swap and it
18:04's not on there, we lose any previous chat.
18:07Yeah, exactly.
18:08Because it refreshes, it's like a new
18:10browser tab.
18:11So it refreshes the stream.
18:13We could say always show messages so they
18:15always stay.
18:17I wonder if that will keep it, that will
18:18stop it from...
18:20Let's try that.
18:21So let's try this.
18:25I think I can... Oh, interesting.
18:28I think I can...
18:32Oh, wow.
18:33I can just chat to my own stream from the
18:35tool.
18:36That's interesting.
18:37More comments.
18:38So now let's test this.
18:41Go to the side.
18:44Go to the live stream.
18:47Go to this screenshot.
18:49OK, that's all good.
18:50Oh, sweet.
18:51I've just noticed that.
18:52That's awesome.
18:54You can just chat straight into the stream.
18:56Wait, that makes it so much easier because
18:58the main thing I was thinking about was
19:00being
19:01able to view it so we could respond to any
19:02chats.
19:03But if we can see them on the right, I've
19:04just noticed that.
19:05That's really cool.
19:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:07It's all in here.
19:08If anyone is wondering, we're using
19:10something called Ecamm Live, but that's...
19:13Nice one.
19:14There's Latoya's thumbs.
19:16So if we now swap back to there, so Latoya
19:18then stays there.
19:20Yeah, but I haven't removed it from all the
19:21streams.
19:22Oh, you haven't removed it yet.
19:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:24So I think I want to keep it on this scene.
19:29Go to that one.
19:31Disappears.
19:32Go back.
19:33No, it resets it every time.
19:38Downside of using that.
19:40But it's fine.
19:42I think we can be tactical about stuff and
19:44I can also bring stuff in on screen if that
19:47makes sense.
19:48I'll try and see if there's a better widget
19:49.
19:50Let me take a note of that before I forget.
19:55Better stream overlay that persists.
20:01I think given that everyone will be
20:04watching on YouTube...
20:07I think it's fine.
20:09Because everyone's watching on YouTube,
20:10they'll be able to see the chat anyway,
20:12right?
20:12Anyway, exactly.
20:13It's mainly...
20:14It's on the right-hand side.
20:15And then if we can see the chat within Ec
20:17amm's...
20:18Yeah.
20:19Then actually the chat becomes pointless at
20:21this point.
20:22Yeah.
20:23And I can also pull up anything from the
20:26past.
20:27So for example, I can bring them up like
20:29this, right?
20:30So...
20:31Which works.
20:32I think you're right.
20:33We don't need this constant stream on the
20:35video.
20:36Yeah.
20:37If we leave it as is...
20:38Because even on a replay of songs or a
20:39Twitch replay, they can have the live chat
20:40replay
20:41as well on YouTube.
20:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:43I think it's useful for the beginning
20:44before we get started into the conference.
20:47Then during the conference, we'll drop it.
20:50And then at the end, we can put it back.
20:54So maybe one of them where we'll have this
20:56view with it in.
20:58Yep.
20:59And then when the keynote starts, we're
21:00swapping between big and small.
21:03I guess we'll just keep it as big, right?
21:05Yeah, yeah.
21:06So this view and this view with the video
21:08on are probably the best.
21:10So just play that.
21:12No desktop required.
21:14The other thing is I've also got volume
21:16control in the...
21:18That's really confusing.
21:19There's always more than one place where
21:20you can control the volume.
21:22So I've just realized the YouTube volume
21:23and sets are really low, which might
21:25explain why
21:26it doesn't sound as full to people.
21:28But this is good.
21:30Okay.
21:31You two should continue doing the podcast.
21:34Hey, that's like a bad kind of thing that
21:36we haven't done a podcast in ages.
21:39Yeah, exactly.
21:40That's what it actually is.
21:42We do need to do one.
21:48This is it.
21:49This is the new form of podcast, right?
21:51Vodcast, they call it.
21:53Vodcasting.
21:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:55Right.
21:56Let's see.
21:57I want to see if we can get people...
22:02This actually works.
22:04You can try and periscope it.
22:07I didn't want to try and take on too much
22:11at once, but there is a capability to
22:13livestream
22:14into Twitter, into your own feed.
22:16So in essence, people can watch the same
22:20stream in different places.
22:24The thing I've seen that doesn't work as
22:26well there is you get two streams of
22:28comments.
22:30That's too much, yeah.
22:36Which, yeah, so like, well, if you want us
22:40to read your comments, go onto the YouTube.
22:44Don't watch us on Twitter.
22:46Exactly.
22:47Cool.
22:48Send a simple tweet out.
22:51Let's see what happens.
22:53Didn't put any sort of useful links to it,
22:56but if you click on it, it goes to the
23:00right
23:01place.
23:02Yeah.
23:03Cool.
23:04I'm not sure if you can see it on the left
23:06as you post something else online, but
23:08seeing
23:09everyone get their merch from Tableau, it's
23:12good fun.
23:14Yeah.
23:15No, yeah.
23:16Are you the guy who hasn't got it and you
23:19're sort of like sat here like...
23:23I've got it.
23:24Can you not see it?
23:25Oh, he's turned up.
23:27Nice.
23:28So after all of that this morning...
23:29It came over like an hour after we spoke.
23:32There you go.
23:33You can't really see what's happening
23:35because it's too bright, but I'll leave it
23:37there.
23:38Plus you've got a bit of a blur going on,
23:40right?
23:42It's actually just called depth of field.
23:48I've got a proper camera.
23:49It's not glass.
23:54It's a proper camera, proper lens.
23:57I could take it off, but that would not be
24:00good for the lighting because it's quite
24:02dark
24:03and I've got these lights on, so it wouldn
24:05't look good.
24:06But it's all good.
24:07All right.
24:08What happens if I press this button?
24:10Oh, right.
24:11I'm pressing a button.
24:13It's just swapping my big feed with the
24:16actual feed.
24:17Cool.
24:18Oh, I can even see the whole stream.
24:20Oh, I didn't know this.
24:21This whole time I've had...
24:23Okay.
24:24Interesting.
24:25Well, this is why I've been watching.
24:27I've been watching the whole stream on the
24:29big bit.
24:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:32Yeah.
24:33Okay.
24:34Which is why I'm going to be watching the
24:36keynote on.
24:37I'll be listening and watching through this
24:38.
24:39Yeah, yeah.
24:41Yeah, this is good.
24:44I think we're pretty good.
24:45I think everything is good.
24:47Okay.
24:48You got an iMessage.
24:49You got an iMessage, not me.
24:52Right.
24:53I can even favorite messages in case you
24:54want to come back to them.
24:56So that's a useful thing.
24:57Can you do that as well?
24:58Can you favorite some of the messages?
25:00No.
25:02Okay.
25:03I think I can kick you out as well.
25:06That's interesting.
25:07I won't do that.
25:09Cool.
25:10So I don't think there's anything else for
25:13us to discover.
25:13So going back to the comments, apparently
25:14...
25:15Yeah, go on.
25:16Apparently, Andrew's YouTube on his TV just
25:18auto-connected to this.
25:20Like that is...
25:23Say what?
25:24So...
25:25I'm just reading up the comments from
25:26earlier.
25:27Andrew said that his YouTube on his TV just
25:29connected automatically.
25:31All right.
25:32It just...
25:33Big screen.
25:34I think it does that.
25:35I think if you go live on YouTube and you
25:37subscribe to someone, it by default tries
25:41to put you into their live stream because
25:43it just assumes that you've subscribed to
25:45this
25:45person and just throws...
25:46Oh, and you're interested.
25:47Yeah, yeah.
25:48It just puts it next.
25:50And YouTube's trying to pivot to live
25:51content more, if that makes sense.
25:54So they will put you in even if you haven't
25:56suggested it, even if it's not even the
26:00kind
26:00of thing you want to do.
26:01Some people never watch live streams and it
26:02still chucks them in.
26:04So it's a bit weird.
26:06But okay, this is good.
26:07I don't watch live streams, right?
26:09Like my YouTube rabbit holes, but I don't
26:11think I've ever watched a live stream.
26:14Yeah.
26:15I have something called preview mode, which
26:18...
26:19What is this?
26:22Back to live mode.
26:24Oh, I can change the design without
26:25changing everything.
26:27Okay, this is good.
26:29Right.
26:30Yeah, do send us a pic, Andrew.
26:33That would be great.
26:34I'd love to see that.
26:35Do it on Twitter or something.
26:38What is this comment box?
26:39I'm hitting a chat button and it's not
26:42doing anything.
26:44That is interesting.
26:46What is that?
26:50This is...
26:51Oh, this is okay.
26:54Interesting.
26:55I think I can get the comments on screen.
26:59I think I can get it comments on screen.
27:01I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.
27:06No, not that.
27:09Cancel.
27:12It's going to be one of these stream labs.
27:16Keeping running.
27:17Oh, this might be the option that I think I
27:20didn't tick.
27:22Right.
27:23I think I've got it.
27:26So...
27:30Switch that off.
27:38Let's do this.
27:39I'm enjoying the oscillation between...
27:45We peaked at 11 viewers at some point and
27:48we're now back at three.
27:49It always happens.
27:50There was a hype when you go live, right?
27:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:54I think it was...
27:55And then when your tweet went out, we were
27:56up at seven or eight and then we're back a
27:58year.
27:58It's interesting.
27:59I'm intrigued by these numbers.
28:06I'm intrigued by the numbers.
28:10Where has it put the...
28:12Okay, so that's the test.
28:17Where is that going to come in?
28:20Oh, okay.
28:23That's a weird one.
28:25Let's not do that.
28:26Don't feel like...
28:27That's probably not where you want to put
28:29it.
28:30Okay.
28:31Test again.
28:35Oh, here we go.
28:38Okay, this is huge.
28:40Let's do some editing.
28:43Make video bigger and our faces small.
28:46Okay.
28:47Yeah, so Mimo, I think you might have
28:49missed the earlier bit, but we've got the
28:51ability
28:52to swap between the two.
28:53Yeah, we've got the ability to switch
28:54between these two like this.
28:56So I think during the keynote, we'll have
29:01this one mainly.
29:03And then during the pre-stream, we'll swap
29:05down to this one and then just us as well.
29:08So we're just testing a couple of the
29:09different ways.
29:11So I think I've mastered the widget because
29:13look, we came back and it's still there.
29:16Nice.
29:17So this is good.
29:19So we can go back and have it just on this
29:22and the other one and we're good.
29:25Wicked.
29:26Right.
29:27We've been streaming for 30 minutes, mate.
29:31I think General Levy.
29:36Incredible.
29:38Said in the most British way possible.
29:43Oh, God.
29:45If you're watching the stream and you got
29:49that joke, let us know.
29:52But now I think I think I think we're
29:53pretty much set.
29:55I don't think there's anything else we can
29:56add to this other than I think we've
29:57figured
29:58out the chats in the comments.
29:59They appear and disappear.
30:01They appear after a while.
30:03So we can leave it on this view.
30:04We don't need it on this view.
30:06We come back to this view.
30:07They're there in the middle.
30:10We've got this view, which we get rid of
30:12them and the video.
30:14Back again.
30:15I don't use OBS, Mimo.
30:17I was planning to use OBS and then I got a
30:21new MacBook.
30:23And so I switched to I decided to use Ecamm
30:26Live because I'd heard good things about it
30:28.
30:28And the main reason I wanted to use the Ec
30:30amm Live is so that Ravi wouldn't have to
30:32use
30:32Zoom to dial into this and then me
30:35essentially use OBS to sample Zoom.
30:39But then Ravi wouldn't be able to see what
30:41you're seeing.
30:42So what this solution does nicely is it
30:45gives Ravi a view of what I'm seeing in
30:47real time.
30:48And it's also what you see in the stream.
30:50So it's a very nice integrated solution.
30:53And yeah, it's running on a laptop,
30:55basically.
30:56We did this last year.
30:58Last year was like the keynote I had on my
31:01screen so it was in sync with Tim.
31:04We had one, I had one ear pod in that was
31:07speaking to him on FaceTime or Zoom.
31:10And then another that was listening to the
31:12keynote.
31:13It was a chaotic setup so it was so much
31:15better.
31:16It was janky.
31:18So this is much more seamless.
31:20I think you've had a better experience
31:23joining.
31:24Yeah.
31:26I think I've had a much, much better
31:27experience managing it.
31:29Yeah.
31:31And I can change anything real time.
31:33Yeah, go for it.
31:35Yeah, here's a question.
31:36So tomorrow, what time are we thinking?
31:41It's a five o'clock kickoff.
31:43It's a five o'clock kickoff.
31:44The Tableau YouTube stream, which is what
31:45we'll be using in the feed.
31:47So some inside baseball.
31:49This is the stream ready to go.
31:52I have them all tuned up already.
31:55So I'm just using the full screen view over
31:57here.
31:58Switch to it.
31:59That's basically what it's going to be.
32:01So we'll watch the YouTube stream, not the
32:04stream inside of the player.
32:08I back YouTube to be more reliable.
32:11That will also mean that we might have some
32:14lag compared to that player, but that's
32:17fine.
32:18If anything happens and the YouTube stream
32:21goes down because Tableau, something
32:23happens there,
32:23then I have a plan B, which is to go
32:26basically watch it from the pages, if that
32:29makes sense.
32:30So I think we're pretty good.
32:33Nice.
32:34And what time are we starting?
32:35Are we starting five minutes before, 10
32:36minutes before?
32:37Fifteen minutes before.
32:38Tableau starts five minutes before, and we
32:40start 15 minutes before just to catch
32:43people as they're coming online.
32:44Fifteen minutes means if something goes
32:46wrong, we've got 15 minutes to fix it, but
32:49nothing should go wrong.
32:51This setup is pretty solid.
32:53Because of pros of this.
32:54Yes, exactly.
32:56Tableau Idris Incri, if it crashes the
32:59stream.
33:00Yeah, it's true.
33:03I totally agree.
33:04Anyone else able to recommend a good TC
33:06session about leveling up in Tableau?
33:10Hey, Max, this is the greatest hits of
33:15stuff me and Ravi has done in a while.
33:16I love it.
33:17Love it.
33:18Yeah, I think it's a pretty good session.
33:21Fun fact, Ravi and I haven't actually
33:23watched the session itself.
33:25We recorded it, but we had to hand it over
33:28to Tableau to edit it.
33:29And we sort of said to ourselves that we'd
33:31watch it along with everyone else.
33:33But we'd planned it, of course, we kind of
33:34went through it and it was a very strict 25
33:37minute sort of timeframe.
33:39So it's not long, very, very compact
33:41session, 25 minutes to fit in with the
33:43episode structure that they want.
33:46Again, this is an exclusive for the four
33:48people watching right now.
33:51But it's a bit different from what the
33:52actual session title is.
33:54So if anyone goes into thinking, "Oh, yeah,
33:56I'm going to learn Tableau better."
33:59We addressed that early on.
34:01But it's more like a history lesson.
34:05And more of like doubling down on why Table
34:08au is doing such things and where are they
34:10going now and next with it.
34:12Yeah, so if I go to...
34:15Why is it telling me to register? I've
34:17already registered. Come on.
34:20This is a better website than recent years.
34:23So I think Tableau deserves some credit.
34:26Yeah, it's actually pretty good.
34:30That's my registration ticket.
34:34What am I doing wrong here?
34:36So you want to go back to where you were?
34:39Yeah.
34:41And then go to build your schedule?
34:47There you go.
34:48Yeah, well, "TC convinced my server admins
34:49to finally get current."
34:51Hey, there might be something on that.
34:54There might be something on that where they
34:56talk about the changing release cadence.
34:59I think there already has been something on
35:01that.
35:02I'll save it.
35:04Has there been a block?
35:06I think there has been an announcement, but
35:08it's not been sort of emphasized.
35:12I don't think Tableau wants to emphasize it
35:14, to be fair.
35:15So the change is essentially that on-prem
35:18ise servers are going to go to a six-monthly
35:21update schedule.
35:23That doesn't mean they won't get patched
35:24for six months.
35:26It just means the updates won't come every
35:29quarter as we're used to.
35:32Tableau Online will continue to get them
35:33quarterly, but Tableau Server will only get
35:35them every six months.
35:37And that's essentially because a customer
35:39said the Tableau update too fast.
35:42I personally don't think that's a great
35:43excuse, but I guess that's a topic for
35:46another podcast.
35:48I think it's a great excuse.
35:50Anyway, I agree with it.
35:52I was pushing for it.
35:55Mimo has noted on a technical point, our
36:00names aren't central to the – what do you
36:03call it?
36:03It's squabble?
36:05Yeah, I had to move this around.
36:08Let me do this.
36:10These are not perfectly centered to the squ
36:13ircle.
36:14Squircle.
36:16It's a good technical point.
36:18What I will say is I think they are.
36:22I think there's something going on with the
36:24squircle.
36:25For example, if I make myself not a squirc
36:27le and I just make it a square, you'll see
36:29that the boundaries of the sides is sort of
36:33weird.
36:34The squircle makes you think that they're
36:36in the sort of –
36:37And also I guess it's the name and the font
36:39and the size makes it look a bit weird.
36:42If I do this, if I make this exactly the
36:45same size, move it across, set it in.
36:50There you go.
36:52I wish there was more alignment tools.
36:54I don't know if I can bring in a grid.
36:56Can I bring in a grid?
36:58That's how you'd fix this really, right?
37:02Just bring in a grid.
37:04It has a grid for halves.
37:08Snapping.
37:09It has these for the edge, but it doesn't
37:11have them for the middle, which is where I
37:13actually want them.
37:15Now I've messed this up.
37:18That's good.
37:20Maybe a circle is better so that people don
37:23't –
37:25Feel like you don't need to do the
37:27distortion as much.
37:28Exactly.
37:30A circle is just better.
37:32Plus it's aesthetically pleasing to have a
37:35circle anyway.
37:37Thanks, Mimo. Thanks for the feedback.
37:39So you're going to show our session?
37:44Yes, I am. That's what I was trying to do
37:46and I forgot.
37:48This is the tricky bit. I had not thought
37:51about this.
37:52Here we go. Here's a session.
37:54Trebleau drill down how to level up in
37:55Tableau.
37:56Obviously it's in three different time
37:57zones.
37:58These are the different time zones that you
38:00can watch it in.
38:01The best time zone I think to watch the
38:03sessions is the American one because that's
38:07the time zone that has them first.
38:11Then it's the Asian time zone, which has
38:13them second.
38:14Then it's the UK time zone, which has them
38:16the next day.
38:18So if you're watching this in the UK, you
38:20have a good chance of having everything
38:21sport for you.
38:22Mimo made a good point. When you put that
38:24on screen, our position changed.
38:26That's probably because you did it on a
38:28previous template.
38:30I did it on this one.
38:33Yeah.
38:35And we went back to squirkles when you went
38:37there as well.
38:38Mimo, for context, each of these views will
38:42have a slightly different positioning
38:46because they're independent.
38:49Because I don't want the text to be the
38:50same size in all of them.
38:52These two will have slightly different
38:55setups.
38:57I'm probably giving everyone nausea doing
38:58this.
38:59But yeah, we'll fix this later. I'll go
39:02back and do it.
39:04Anyway, back to the session.
39:06I'm going to try to drill down how to level
39:07up in Tableau.
39:08Three time zones. If you're in the UK, you
39:10'll watch it last.
39:11If you're in America, you'll watch it first
39:12.
39:13I believe all the sessions will be
39:14available after the conference.
39:16If I go to episodes, my TC21, there is an
39:22on-demand section.
39:23I believe that is for stuff that's coming
39:25after.
39:26I bought my schedule, all episodes.
39:31Am I right in saying that or am I making an
39:33assumption?
39:35What?
39:38Sessions afterwards.
39:40I think they're going to be on demand.
39:43Yeah, that's correct.
39:44On demand.
39:45So the on-demand episodes are slightly
39:46different as well.
39:47So they'll be the ones after this room,
39:50they'll be online.
39:51I think there's also going to be a few that
39:54you can watch from previous years and also
39:57previous content.
39:58Correct.
39:59I think there's episodes.
40:01Yeah, that's what Salesforce were calling
40:03them in their conference episodes.
40:05It's nice. It's a nice way of thinking of
40:07it like a streaming service, right?
40:09Yeah.
40:10Cool.
40:11So yeah, that's pretty much that.
40:14I'm happy with that.
40:16Call it a day there, guys.
40:1840-minute stream.
40:20Mimo being picky is the reason why things
40:22get better.
40:24This is superb. Thank you for the feedback.
40:27It's absolutely what we need, so thank you,
40:29thank you for that.
40:31For everyone who's watching, tune in
40:33tomorrow.
40:35This will be a lot more polished.
40:36We figured out a ton of stuff.
40:38Everything's set up.
40:39It's going to be a blast.
40:40I'm going to move this a bit to the left so
40:41it's not running over your face, Ravi.
40:44And I need to still get higher.
40:47I need to sort of be here.
40:50There to match your thing.
40:52So yeah.
40:54I'm not going to get it perfect.
40:56Cool.
40:58Thank you, everyone, for watching.
41:00I'm going to stop the stream now, so it's
41:02going to cut off,
41:04but I always have to bear in mind the lag.
41:07So when I click Finish, we have to not talk
41:10for about 10 seconds before.
41:12Otherwise, it's a bit weird.
41:14Cool. Thanks for watching, guys.
41:15See you soon.
41:16Right. Tune in, everyone.
41:18Bye.
