0:00Hey it's Tim here. In today's video the
0:02Tableau data extract is being deprecated in
0:05March 2023.
0:06This has been the default file type for
0:08Tableau extracts for so so long and back in
0:12version 10.5
0:13Tableau basically announced something
0:15called the hyper data extract. Now the
0:18thing about this
0:19feature change is a lot of people are going
0:21to think that you know something radical is
0:23changing
0:24and that's because we've actually been
0:25quite lazy with using terminology in the
0:27Tableau world. So
0:29for a long time when you create an extract
0:31the file type that has come out of that has
0:33been
0:34called a .TDE file and when Tableau
0:36acquired a company called Hyper essentially
0:39they changed
0:40that file format to a .Hyper. I've actually
0:42got a playlist here on YouTube that shows
0:44you all
0:44the different file types and I go through
0:46all this in a lot more detail check this
0:48out but in essence
0:50people have sort of loosely used the term
0:52Tableau data extract because that's exactly
0:55what it stood
0:56for it was an extract and so even I've sort
0:58of fallen into this trap I'll often say
1:01take a Tableau
1:01data extract and people will assume that I
1:04'm talking about a .TDE when I in fact
1:06actually mean
1:07a Hyper file and so what Tableau is
1:08basically announcing now and it's good they
1:10're doing it now
1:11because you're essentially getting almost a
1:14year and a month sort of lead time before
1:16this change
1:16actually sort of comes into place what they
1:18're essentially announcing is that the Hyper
1:21file is
1:21going to be the only extract type that
1:23Tableau will be making. I think this is
1:25actually a good
1:25thing because we've had quite a long period
1:28of having both around and people have
1:30always asked
1:31well what's the difference between the two
1:33why would I create a .TDE over a Hyper file
1:35and in
1:36essence it's it's sort of like a defunct
1:39question because for most people the Hyper
1:41has been basically
1:42the only option that you can actually
1:44create the only people who are probably
1:45still creating
1:46Tableau data extracts as it were are people
1:49using an older version of Tableau and so
1:51what this
1:52community post does really nicely it's from
1:54Philip Xing who I believe is a product
1:56manager
1:56of the Hyper team here he's basically just
1:59sort of breaking this down so people know
2:01what's going on
2:02and for all customers starting in March 20
2:0523 the release of 2023.1 these products will
2:10no longer
2:10be able to support Tableau data extracts
2:12and it goes on to say look for Tableau
2:15Online customers
2:16you don't actually need to do anything
2:18starting in June this year they'll start to
2:21you know
2:22basically remove the ability to publish the
2:24.TDE and then after that there's actually
2:27some activity
2:28going on to help convert .TDEs to the Hyper
2:30file so essentially everything you need is
2:32in this post
2:33but if we just go down there's a little bit
2:34of history about the Hyper file released in
2:372018
2:38version 10.5 and there's a little bit of a
2:41sort of a hint that in essence this change
2:44is sort of
2:45necessary to enable some of the features
2:47coming in the future I always like these
2:49kind of changes
2:50because you know if there's been no obvious
2:52reason for the change to come but there is
2:54an obvious
2:54reason going into the future then this is
2:56sort of a good thing to see if that makes
2:58sense so maybe
2:59I'm just wish casting and speculating but
3:01nonetheless every sort of detail that you
3:04need
3:04is really here in the post if you've got a
3:06question on this there's no point me
3:07reading this to you
3:08just just go to this community post it's in
3:11the description of this video head to that
3:14page and
3:14really sort of get a good understanding now
3:16for those of you who are Tableau server
3:18admins of
3:18course this is sort of slightly concerning
3:20because it might mean if you've got some T
3:22DEs lurking
3:23around on your server you might want to
3:25know how to find them well again this guide
3:27is really good
3:28if I open up this image here you actually
3:30get a little guide that shows you how to go
3:32and find
3:33all the Tableau data extracts on your
3:35server so you go to the Tableau server site
3:37or Tableau
3:38server or Tableau online you go to the data
3:40sources and on the right hand side you can
3:42actually filter to your data sources that
3:44are data Tableau data extracts now these
3:47specifically use
3:48the connection type Tableau data engine
3:50which is also another acronym TDE again so
3:53Tableau data
3:54extract Tableau data engine these acronyms
3:56get really confusing but nonetheless it's
3:58all here
3:59just go check it out now the nice thing is
4:01if you're a server admin in the next
4:03version of
4:04Tableau server 2020.1 they're actually
4:07going to bring in some commands to the
4:09Tableau services
4:10manager that allows you to block Tableau
4:12data extracts being published this is a
4:15good way of
4:15stopping these things coming because
4:17essentially whoever's still using that file
4:19type will kind of
4:20come to you and say hey I can't do this
4:22what's going on and that will be a great
4:24opportunity
4:24for you to catch those sort of edge cases
4:26before they cause you a problem in a year's
4:28time but you
4:29can also actually go through a series of
4:31steps here to convert things across so
4:33there's a little
4:33bit of a guide and here how to convert
4:36things and some of it is manual you could
4:38sort of do a
4:39example script in fact if I go over here to
4:42this little page here there's this little
4:45script that someone's written that
4:47essentially converts a tde to a hyperfile
4:49so
4:49a lot of this is there and it's like it's
4:52no coincidence that this is on the Tableau
4:54GitHub
4:55page and it was updated 13 days ago
4:57essentially someone's written the script
4:59and has put it here
5:00to help customers do this sort of
5:02transition as well so not much more to say
5:05than other than man
5:06it's you know it's it's sort of a sad day
5:08maybe we should do like a farewell party
5:10for the Tableau
5:11data extract if you'd like to see that let
5:12me know in the comments that would be
5:14really sort
5:14of nice touch but yeah the Tableau data
5:17extract is being deprecated in March 2023
5:20as of 2021
5:21wait 2022.1 even there's going to be a
5:25capability in Tableau server to essentially
5:27stop people using
5:28it if you're on Tableau Online this is
5:29probably going to be an even easier process
5:31less for you
5:32to do Tableau pretty much going to take
5:34care of you in two instances they'll
5:36restrict the ability
5:37to publish tdes and then they'll also start
5:40converting old files into other formats now
5:43if
5:43you use Tableau Public this might be
5:45interesting because Tableau Public probably
5:47has the biggest
5:48library of tdes Tableau Online typically
5:51won't unless you've been a Tableau customer
5:53for a
5:53really long time and you've basically not
5:56touched a workbook in ages i'm talking
5:58really long time
6:00like 10.5 version 10.5 is the version you
6:03have to go back and you know basically if
6:06you've built
6:07anything before version 10.5 then that
6:09might be a tde but if it's not been touched
6:11at all then
6:12you should probably refresh those workbooks
6:14anyway but Tableau Public is going to be
6:16the thing here
6:17and so if you use Tableau Public on a daily
6:19basis or if you just use it to learn and
6:21you've got some
6:22really old stuff i've got stuff in there
6:23that when i open it i get the little
6:25warning saying hey
6:26this was created in version 7 of Tableau do
6:29you want to update it those are the kind of
6:31workbooks
6:31that are going to be updated here so it's
6:34really interesting to see how that will go
6:36if any of
6:37those workbooks will stop failing if there
6:38's any sort of change to those workbooks
6:40because you've
6:40changed the data type i don't think they
6:43will and i think the architecture behind
6:45this is pretty
6:45sound and yeah it's going to be a pretty
6:48smooth process i hope so if you want to
6:50know more go to
6:51this community post here in the description
6:53there's a little bit of a comment area you
6:55can sort of
6:56ask any questions you want here and yeah
6:58just in general check out the Tableau
7:00forums really
7:01nice place they often do put lots of these
7:03announcements here because it's pretty much
7:05the only place you can sort of put this
7:07kind of stuff that's not a marketing blog
7:09post and is also
7:10not like a high maintenance sort of place
7:12so it's a really good place to put stuff
7:14for people to go
7:15find stuff so that's more than enough for
7:17me i've rambled for way too long um yeah
7:19the tde is being
7:20deprecated um if you haven't noticed that
7:22we know we're going a little bit quiet on
7:24on the channel
7:24at the moment that's because you know i'm a
7:26little bit busy on my side i've got lots of
7:28sort of videos
7:29planned i've got a lot of people asking me
7:31questions about specific videos that i said
7:33i'd do
7:34around snowflake aws all tricks all of
7:37these things are coming up trust me i hear
7:40you i see
7:40every single comment if i haven't replied
7:42to your comment i just simply haven't had
7:44time to get back
7:45to you um but i see every single comment i
7:47see all these requests and they will just
7:49happen at
7:50some point when i have time it's just one
7:51of those things where you know life
7:53sometimes takes over
7:54and yeah you just have to wait for that to
7:56sort of pass by and then um yeah i'll be
7:58back on the
7:59content machine making lots more content we
8:01've got 2022.1 just around the corner so
8:04inevitably
8:05that will force me into gear so look out
8:07for that but other than that thanks for
8:09watching
8:09and i'll catch you in the next video
