Tableau Pulse Updates March 24 | New in Tableau 2024.1
Tableau Pulse is being updated behind the scenes outside the normal release cycle, so here's how to keep track of every change.
- The Tableau Release Navigator is the most up-to-date, detailed list of changes across the whole Tableau product suite, and you can filter it down to just Tableau Pulse
- Because Pulse is cloud and browser only, updates roll out continuously rather than waiting for the now three-times-a-year release cycle
- Some Tableau Cloud instances run slightly ahead of the release cadence, which explains why users see bugs that others on a more advanced instance don't
- New March features include ad hoc questions matched to existing insights, applied filters shown above the chart, improved metric recommendations from dashboards, and clearer navigation back to Tableau Cloud
- Pre-aggregated fields in metric definitions, previously a bug for many users, have now been pushed live in Pulse
- Why Pulse updates happen off-cycle0:09
- Using the Tableau Release Navigator0:57
- Why I missed some Pulse issues1:37
- Ad hoc questions for insights3:08
- Applied filters shown for metric4:18
- Improved metric recommendations for dashboards4:53

0:00Hey, it's Tim here, it's March and Tableau
0:02have actually been updating Tableau Pulse
0:03behind the scenes.
0:04This is just a short video to show you what
0:06those updates are.
0:07As ever, let's get started.
0:09Okay, so I have to be honest, I'm going to
0:10stop covering Tableau Pulse for a short
0:12while because I think they're going to be
0:14updated very, very quickly.
0:15So I think over the next month, we might
0:18see some changes to the platform,
0:20but I wanted to make a brief video just to
0:22show people how to stay in touch with these
0:24changes
0:25because they're kind of happening behind
0:27the scenes and they're not in sequence with
0:29typical release cycles for Tableau.
0:32Don't forget that the release cycles have
0:33changed, so they're now going to be only
0:35three updates a year.
0:37We should see more in those updates as a
0:39result,
0:40but also we should see behavior like this,
0:42things coming out before the release
0:44because really they just need to come out
0:45and people need to start using them.
0:47So because Tableau Pulse is cloud only,
0:49these updates can be rolled out to users.
0:52Tableau Pulse is a browser-only experience.
0:54It doesn't really touch Tableau desktop.
0:56So if you head to the Tableau release navig
0:59ator, I've made a video on this before.
1:01This is probably the most up-to-date
1:03detailed list of changes within the Tableau
1:06product suite.
1:07It doesn't just cover Tableau Pulse, it
1:09covers all the products.
1:10You can see here that Tableau Cloud is the
1:12selected product here,
1:13but you can actually choose the specific
1:16version you want to look at.
1:18You can choose a specific offering, whether
1:20it's an add-on or not.
1:22But for this, I'm just going to go ahead
1:23and focus in on Tableau Pulse.
1:25Let's just go ahead and click those.
1:27And you'll see that straight away we get
1:29this sort of much narrow down list and
1:31everything in Tableau Pulse is near.
1:33There's no real changes here.
1:35So you can see the new updates.
1:37So some of the comments that I've had in
1:39response to my video showing people how it
1:42works,
1:42I've actually touched on some of these
1:44points and I didn't actually know there
1:45were sort of inadequacies with the
1:47capabilities and the features.
1:49Partly because I've used them and I didn't
1:51come across those issues.
1:52Or what happened was I used Tableau Pulse,
1:55did my video about how it works.
1:57I keep that deliberately simple. Didn't try
2:00advanced capabilities until what was
2:02essentially three weeks ago.
2:04And then in that release, because I'm using
2:08a cloud instance of Tableau Cloud,
2:10I was already on the latest version. So I
2:12wasn't seeing the issues that people were
2:14seeing.
2:14And I was thinking that we were all on the
2:16same version.
2:16So it actually turns out the instance of
2:19Tableau Cloud that I have is a little bit
2:22ahead of the release cadence.
2:24And so that's why when people are using
2:26Tableau Pulse, they're not seeing the same
2:28issues as I'm seeing necessarily.
2:30So this is probably the definitive way to
2:32sort of map those capabilities.
2:34That's not me giving an excuse for not
2:35covering stuff. It's just something that I
2:38just missed.
2:39I should really be aware of that, but it's
2:40just not something I thought of.
2:41And I didn't think to call it out because I
2:43didn't think it was a problem.
2:44So now I now I'll be sure to sort of try
2:46and make sure I differentiate between those
2:49two.
2:49Nonetheless, if you see this list, you can
2:52see here the March updates.
2:54We've got these specific updates and these
2:57were rolled out to Tableau Pulse very
2:59recently.
3:00There was a little bit of service
3:01maintenance Tableau Cloud that happened a
3:04few days ago now.
3:05But nonetheless, we can see what these
3:07updates are.
3:07So let's go from the top. Tableau Pulse ad
3:10hoc questions for insights in the guided
3:13insights experience.
3:14Click the ask button and enter your own
3:16questions related to the insight surface
3:18for a metric received semantically.
3:22What does this say? Matched suggestions for
3:23more insight.
3:24So what this is is essentially a capability
3:27where if you ask a question,
3:29you can actually go and ask and type a
3:31question
3:32and it will take what you've typed and try
3:33and match it to an existing insight that it
3:36already has.
3:36I'll try and put a screenshot of that up on
3:38screen now.
3:39And so that's kind of handy. I wish this
3:42was a little bit more powerful given we're
3:43all using AI.
3:45I wish it could sort of prompt Tableau to
3:47go off and do a bit of analysis for you.
3:49This is sort of what chat GPT was actually
3:51kind of good at.
3:52It was really good at saying, okay, this is
3:54a question.
3:55I don't know the information for but I have
3:56access to the data source.
3:57Let me go and do the math and figure out
3:59what's going on and come back with an
4:01answer.
4:02The reason that's probably not the case is
4:04because that actually came back with an
4:05accurate answer sometimes.
4:06Unless you did the due diligence and
4:08checked it, it wasn't always accurate.
4:10So maybe that kind of technology is still a
4:13bit early,
4:13but nonetheless, it's good to see that
4:15Tableau is starting to think along those
4:17lines.
4:17Okay, the next one is Tableau Pulse applied
4:20filters shown for metric.
4:22So when you visit the insights exploration
4:23page for a metric,
4:25the specific filters, let's try this again.
4:29The filters are applied to the metric are
4:31now listed above the chart.
4:32So when you make a change to the insights,
4:34you actually get a little breakdown showing
4:36you what those filters are so you can
4:39actually see them.
4:40This wasn't previously the case.
4:41It was just the metric and it was kind of
4:43defined in the text.
4:44But now being able to see the means you can
4:46be more certain about what's going on with
4:48your metric.
4:48Again, I've put an image of that on screen
4:50so you can kind of take a look at that.
4:52The next one is Tableau Pulse improved
4:54metric recommendations for dashboards.
4:56So when you explore recommended metrics for
4:59dashboards,
5:00Tableau now shows you more relevant and
5:01informative recommendations.
5:03Additionally, calculated fields from the
5:05data source now appear in recommendations.
5:08So I'm not sure what this is entirely,
5:12but this is my gut instinct based on a few
5:15bits of information that I've read from
5:17various sources.
5:18And what this is, is when you're looking at
5:21Tableau, Tableau desktop, Tableau dash
5:23boards,
5:24typically in the data guide, there is a
5:26little panel that pops up
5:28and in there are supposed to be what are
5:30called pulse recommendations.
5:32It essentially takes the necessary
5:33attributes for a pulse metric definition
5:36and it creates it from the dashboard you're
5:38looking at.
5:39So you can essentially look at a dashboard,
5:40go look at the recommendation and go,
5:42oh look, here's some possible metric
5:44definitions that I can go and track.
5:46And so you can click on those and it will
5:48take you to the Tableau Pulse editing
5:50experience
5:51and then you're able to just go ahead and
5:52use them.
5:52So that's supposed to be I think what this
5:54is.
5:55I haven't actually got it to work, but I
5:56have seen a demo of it
5:57and I think it's pretty cool because it
5:59could allow for these sort of semantically
6:01created metrics to come out of dashboards.
6:03And if they can push that technology far
6:05enough that it can be trusted for users to
6:08go and pull their own metrics from
6:10and creators can just simply sort of have
6:12oversight of these metrics.
6:13I think that would be super powerful.
6:15Okay, Tableau Pulse improved navigation
6:19options.
6:20So Tableau Pulse Sparkle, that's a great
6:22name,
6:23upper left corner for the Insights
6:24Exploration page now includes dropdown
6:26options
6:27for navigated to Tableau Cloud homepage and
6:29followed metrics.
6:30So one of the biggest things about Tableau
6:32Pulse, at least in my sort of demos that I
6:34've gone through,
6:35is that the back button doesn't do things
6:37consistently
6:37and there's no sort of escape hatch back to
6:40Tableau Cloud.
6:40They've basically fixed those and you can
6:42more easily get to the followed metrics.
6:44It's kind of weird with the followed
6:45metrics because it's kind of in front of
6:48you
6:48and it's not in front of you because there
6:50's sort of two ways of seeing it.
6:51So this just brings those options a little
6:53bit more forward and it makes it easier to
6:55use.
6:56So I think this is really good to see.
6:58Okay, the last one is one that I saw in my
6:59YouTube comments.
7:00A few people actually messaged me saying,
7:02"Hey, I'm having issues with pre-aggregated
7:04fields inside of metric definitions."
7:06I didn't know this was a bug and it might
7:08be because I was using again an advanced
7:10version of Tableau Pulse
7:12and therefore I didn't see the bug.
7:14But a lot of people were struggling with
7:15this.
7:15I saw it in the comments and I kind of didn
7:17't really know what to think of it,
7:19but it turns out that was actually a
7:20feature that was still in development
7:22and it's now been pushed and it's now
7:24available in Tableau Pulse.
7:26So go ahead and check that out.
7:27I think this is pretty cool.
7:29To me, it's the kind of basic thing that
7:31should have been there from the start.
7:32But hey, when you launch a new feature, you
7:34kind of have to start somewhere.
7:35So yeah, if this didn't make the list, it
7:37didn't make the list.
7:38Thankfully, we're not having to wait for a
7:39release to get this, which is kind of good.
7:41So it's good to see this.
7:42So that's pretty much it.
7:43That's all the changes to Tableau Pulse.
7:46I'll try and do these whenever they do big
7:47updates to Tableau Pulse.
7:48And of course, along with the new releases,
7:51I'll be doing these.
7:51But that said, that's pretty much it for
7:54Tableau Pulse for now.
7:55I think I've done enough Pulse content for
7:57a while.
7:59I need to get back on the track.
8:00So I've actually recorded several videos
8:01about embedding, several videos about other
8:03topic.
8:04I just haven't gotten around to editing
8:05them.
8:05So what I'm going to do is for the next
8:07week or so, I'm recording this on the 29th
8:10of March.
8:11You're probably going to see this video in
8:13April, but the next week or so, I'm
8:14actually going to start recording content
8:15and editing content ahead of time.
8:18So that as they come out, it's a little bit
8:20more of a better cadence as we build up to
8:22conference.
8:22And yeah, we start to get a little bit more
8:24momentum on the channel.
8:25All right, thanks for watching and I'll see
8:26you in the next one.
