Tableau 2020.2: Metrics on Tableau Server, Tableau Online and Mobile
You don't need Tableau Desktop or a single custom chart to give every user quick insights on the fly with Metrics.
- Metrics can only be created from a view in a workbook already published to Tableau Server or Tableau Online, and they stay linked to that source workbook.
- Creating a metric is as simple as clicking a mark on a viz, but you must check that Tableau has picked the right measure and dimension, as map selections can default to latitude.
- Metrics live in the project hierarchy like workbooks, and deleting the connected view or workbook stops the metric from functioning.
- You can favourite and share metrics, with favourites surfacing at the top of Tableau Mobile for quick access.
- On mobile you can adjust the date range, change the comparison period (such as previous year), show a comparison line, and toggle the value between absolute number, absolute difference and percentage.
Tableau's Metrics feature lets any user turn a mark on an already-published view into a standalone, trackable KPI card, with no Tableau Desktop and no custom chart-building required. Metrics live alongside workbooks on Server/Online and sync automatically to mobile, giving teams a quick way to monitor numbers on the fly.
The demo uses a standard sample workbook published to Tableau Server, with a view containing sales, profit and category breakdowns. From there, metrics are built directly in the browser and checked on Tableau Mobile for iPhone and iPad.
- Publish the source workbook first 0:04
You must have a workbook already published to Tableau Server or Tableau Online before you can create a metric — metrics are built from a mark on a published view, not from Desktop, and they stay permanently linked to that source workbook.
- Click a mark to create a metric 0:52
Enable the metrics option on the toolbar, then click any mark on the visualisation; Tableau infers the measure and the dimension driving the axis and shows you a live preview before you save it into a project folder.
- Metrics behave like workbooks in the hierarchy 2:55
Once created, a metric sits in the project hierarchy just like a workbook, can be hovered for details or opened to see its trend chart, and can be favourited or shared with other users via email.
- Deleting the source breaks the metric 3:21
Because a metric is only a live pointer to its connected view, removing that view or workbook stops the metric working and it disappears — treat the source as a dependency you can't delete casually.
- Check what Tableau actually picked up 4:02
Always verify the inferred measure and dimension before creating the metric — on map views in particular, Tableau can default to latitude instead of the value you actually care about, so you need to correct it manually.
- Switch between grid and list view 5:11
Grid view shows full mini-charts for each metric; list view instead highlights the current value in blue for a faster scan — use whichever suits how many metrics you're monitoring at once.
- Metrics sync automatically to mobile 5:26
On Tableau Mobile, metrics appear as their own content type inside a project alongside workbooks and views, and favourited metrics surface right at the top of the app for quick access.
- Adjust comparisons and value format on the fly 6:30
On a metric's mobile view you can change the date range, switch the comparison period (e.g. previous month to previous year), toggle a comparison trend line, and cycle the displayed value between absolute number, absolute difference and percentage — all without touching Desktop.
- Metrics only work from views already published to Server or Online — there's no way to create one purely in Desktop.
- Map-based marks can default to picking up latitude as the metric value, so always double-check the definition before saving.
- A metric is a live link, not a snapshot: deleting or moving its source workbook/view breaks it.
- Favouriting a metric is what gets it promoted to the top of the mobile app's view.
Reach for metrics when you want to hand a team or stakeholder a single trackable number from an existing dashboard, without building a bespoke KPI chart or needing them to open Desktop or navigate a full workbook.
How this Rollup was made provenance & method
A Rollup is drafted by AI from the video's transcript, then reviewed and edited by Tim. Everything used to produce this one is listed below — the model, the exact prompt, and the source video — so the process is transparent and reproducible.
- Transcription
- On-device — NVIDIA Parakeet v3 for recent videos, OpenAI Whisper large-v3 for earlier ones. The transcript never leaves the machine or gets published.
- Drafting
- Claude Sonnet 5 in the cloud, from that transcript.
- Prompt
- The exact Rollup prompt (v2) — the full system prompt, unedited.
