0:00In Tableau 22.1 Tableau have enhanced the
0:03data model capabilities so you can swap
0:05root tables and move the tables around the
0:08logical and physical layers around the view
0:11without having to rebuild the whole entire
0:12data model.
0:13Here I have a data model that's been pre-
0:16built. You can actually follow along with
0:17this data source.
0:18If you head to the URL on Tableau's website
0:20you can actually download this exact data
0:23set.
0:23I'm actually using the bookshop.tdsx and
0:25the bookshoplibraries.tdsx. You can do this
0:28with either but the bookshoplibraries.tdsx
0:31is a much bigger data model and it's
0:33exactly what I'm using here.
0:35And what you can now do in 22.1 is if you
0:37realize that you've built out this whole
0:39entire intricate model and you'd like to
0:41move these tables around it's much easier
0:43to do that.
0:44Check this out. Let's say that I realize
0:46that the publisher table should actually be
0:48my root table. I can right click on
0:50publisher and go to the option here to swap
0:52with root.
0:53And Tableau will look at the data model and
0:55it will literally move everything around
0:57for you to get the publisher as a root
0:59table.
1:00Essentially you're swapping the things
1:02around and notice that it keeps the
1:03relationships, relatively speaking, exactly
1:05where everything else was supposed to be.
1:08I don't know the full terminology for that
1:10but book is still related to everything
1:11that was related to it in the right way.
1:14Catalog sales are still related to edition
1:16which is related to the publisher in
1:18exactly the right way.
1:19It's looked at all the relationships and
1:21kept everything in context which means you
1:23still have a working data model when you do
1:25this.
1:26Saving so much time especially if you've
1:28built out a huge data model.
1:29Now let's say you want to undo this. Let's
1:31say you want to move it back.
1:32Well of course you can just go back to book
1:34, swap with root which is going to swap it
1:36with a publisher and everything goes back
1:38to how it was before.
1:40So this is really really handy. But it
1:41doesn't stop there. You can actually
1:43improve this.
1:44Let's say that we realize that the edition
1:45table should be related to the awards.
1:48I can right click edition and this time go
1:50to the move to option and you can see here
1:52that I actually have the other logical
1:54layers that I can look at.
1:56And I can actually send it over to the
1:58award and it moves everything related to
2:01edition after edition to that new place
2:04when it moves edition across.
2:05So now everything is related in the right
2:08setup.
2:09So what this sort of feature is doing is it
2:10's looking at your whole data model and
2:12bringing everything related to that logical
2:14layer with it when it moves.
2:16So this is a really nice quality of life
2:18improvement. It's going to save a lot of
2:19time.
2:20Most data models aren't this complex. Most
2:22data models do tend to be a little bit
2:24simpler.
2:25I'm just going to move this back to the
2:27book and you'll see a sort of a nice
2:29feature here actually where it remembers
2:31the relationship that was set.
2:33So when you move something across and it
2:34doesn't work, you move it back. It's
2:36remembered that relationships and for the
2:37record you can view any relationship by
2:39clicking on the line.
2:41This used to be called the noodle. Tabla
2:42doesn't really use that terminology anymore
2:44.
2:44When you click on these noodles, you
2:46actually get a description of that
2:47relationship just down here.
2:49They've changed the interface a little bit
2:50in the previous version and this is nice
2:52because it gives you a little bit more
2:54context of what's changing.
2:55And of course you've got this nice little
2:57drop down so you can sort of zoom around
2:59the whole entire logical and physical setup
3:02in a really, really nice and easy to see
3:04way.
3:04So this is a really, really nice thing to
3:05sort of look at. You've got your
3:07relationships at the top, logical tables at
3:09the bottom and it's super smooth.
3:11So this is, there's not really much more to
3:13it than this. You can swap them around. Hur
3:15rah, this is great. Get using it.
3:18But yeah, absolutely. The data model is
3:19making lots and lots of strides and it's
3:22good to see this finally in Tabla.
