Quick LODs: New inTableau 2021.1

0:00Hey, it's Tim here. In today's video I'm

0:02taking you through a new feature in Tablo

0:032021.1 and that is Quick LODs.

0:07Now before I get stuck in, I just want to

0:08remind you that I just finished a series on

0:10Level of Detail calculation.

0:13So if you need a refresher or you haven't

0:14even used them or you're maybe not sure

0:16exactly what they do and how they work,

0:18check out that series.

0:20It's going to be in the pop-up above and in

0:21the description below.

0:23But we're here in 2021.1. It's a bit of a

0:25tongue twister, you never get it out

0:27properly.

0:28I'm going to select Superstore here, the

0:29second data source.

0:31And we're just going to get stuck in. So

0:32the way to use this is kind of unintuitive.

0:35I'll be honest, a few people haven't been

0:36able to sort of figure this out.

0:38That's because it's actually not obvious.

0:40If you look at the GIF that Tablo released,

0:42it just basically shows someone dragging

0:44cells onto a dimension and you'll see that

0:45nothing happens.

0:47You get this sort of dimension in measures

0:48separated, but you don't see anything

0:50happening with the LOD.

0:52In order to make this work, you need to

0:54hold CTRL on the Windows machine or CMD

0:56whilst doing it.

0:58So I'm on a Mac, I'm going to hold CMD and

1:01as I drag cells here onto segment, you'll

1:04see that it activates.

1:05And you can see that the segment and the

1:06ship date go blue here as I hover in

1:08between them.

1:09And once I drop that calculation on that

1:11thing, it will actually create a new Level

1:13of Detail calculation right here.

1:16You can see it pops up in here and it

1:18causes cells and then the dimension you

1:20dropped it on. So in this case, it's cells

1:22segment.

1:23OK, so if we actually just right click on

1:25that and edit it, you can see that it is

1:28indeed a fixed LOD.

1:30And that's another thing. This quick LOD

1:31will only create a fixed Level of Detail

1:33calculation.

1:35You can, of course, then come in here and

1:36change this yourself.

1:37So if you wanted to make this an include

1:39function, you can go ahead and do that and

1:41you're pretty much good to go.

1:43So it's a really, really easy thing to do.

1:46That's probably the fastest way to do it.

1:47Now, there is another way of doing this. If

1:49I just hold CMD or CTRL on the Windows

1:52machine cells here and I hold CMD and I

1:54select segment,

1:55you'll see that I have two things selected.

1:57If I right click on that and then I go down

1:58to create, you'll see here I have another

2:00option to create an LOD calculation.

2:03And now when I do that, it obviously opens

2:04up the calculation window.

2:06And this is handy because what it can do

2:07here is actually change this straight away.

2:10This option opens up the calculation window

2:12immediately.

2:13And notice this is called cell segment one

2:15because you've already created one before.

2:18So it's just renaming it in a sequential

2:19order. So that's pretty much it. Quick LODs

2:22.

2:22It's a very, very simple thing and slightly

2:23unintuitive to figure out if you haven't

2:25already figured it out.

2:27So just remember, you need to hold CTRL on

2:29the Windows, CMD on the Mac and you're

2:30pretty much done.
