New site and 3 great Tableau Youtube channels to follow
It's 2021 and we're back to releasing new videos. In this one, I briefly outline the new website Tableautim.com and I also take a moment to
- The new TableauTim.com gives videos a focused, mobile-friendly home so learning content isn't competing with YouTube's unrelated recommendations
- Content is split into playlists (grouped, longer topics) and one-off videos, with planned files and transcript tabs for accessibility
- Videos still load from YouTube, so logged-in viewers keep watch history and Premium offline downloads, while page-to-page navigation avoids reloads
- Desktop and web authoring are merged into one section because Tableau Online and web authoring now match much of desktop's capability
- Three new creators to follow: SQLBelle, Data with Bara (strong thumbnails and technical explanations) and Andre for developer-focused embedding, APIs and extensions content
0:00Hey, it's Tim here and we're back. It's
0:012020 and finally nearly the end of January
0:05and I'm finally
0:05getting a video out to kick off the year.
0:08Now I've actually been quite busy since the
0:10beginning of
0:10the year. I've actually been working on a
0:12few things. If you haven't checked it out
0:13already,
0:14check out the Path to Normalcy video that
0:15Tablo launched a couple of weeks ago. I was
0:18actually
0:18behind making that, narrating that, editing
0:20it, producing it, so that's something I was
0:22working
0:23on over the Christmas break. And alongside
0:25that I've actually been working on
0:26something that's
0:27really really special that I'm going to be
0:28announcing today. Actually I've announced
0:30it
0:30already if you follow me on Twitter. It's
0:33the Tablo Tim website redesign. Essentially
0:35I've gone
0:36from top to bottom, completely redesigned
0:38my blog so that it's a better place for
0:40hosting videos
0:41and in this video I'm going to be showing
0:43you a bit more about how it works. The
0:45other thing I
0:46want to do is put a little bit of a focus
0:48on other creators in the space. There are
0:50lots of other
0:50people creating great YouTube content and I
0:53remember this time last year I was starting
0:55out
0:55the same journey with only 800 subscribers
0:57and here we are with thousands. I'd love to
1:00spread
1:00that love to lots of other great YouTubers.
1:02So I'm also going to be featuring three You
1:04Tubers I think
1:05you should be following who are just
1:07starting out on their journey, are doing
1:09great content
1:09and I think you're going to enjoy what they
1:11're making. So let's get stuck in.
1:13Okay so let's take a look at the website. I
1:15've actually got it here on screen and I've
1:18spent a
1:18lot of time actually redesigning this. It's
1:20actually been a passion of mine for the
1:22last
1:22three months actually. Back in November I
1:24realized with 2020.4 that YouTube just wasn
1:28't the best place
1:28to share videos and I know that sounds
1:30ironic but the real challenge with YouTube
1:32especially when
1:33you're trying to create learning content is
1:35that your video is always at the mercy of
1:37whatever
1:38other interests that person has and for me
1:40that's F1, Destiny, Call of Duty, Warzone
1:43and it doesn't
1:44matter how many videos I watch about Table
1:47au a Warzone video or an F1 video is only
1:49two videos
1:50away as a suggestion. So what I wanted to
1:52do is to create a safe place for the videos
1:54essentially
1:55somewhere where if you're actually
1:57searching for this content and you want to
1:58spend a bit of time
1:59focused on Tableau and learning Tableau my
2:02blog or my website could actually help with
2:04that and
2:04actually you can see it here on screen. It
2:07's hopefully what I think is a very fresh
2:09design,
2:10it's something very modern and it works
2:12great on mobile and on desktop. If I just
2:15show it to you
2:15here on screen if I just collapse this down
2:17here you can actually get a glimpse of what
2:19the mobile
2:20design looks like and it works great in
2:22both setups. This is absolutely designed
2:24with a view
2:25that sometimes when you hit that link you
2:27're actually on your smallest device and you
2:30might
2:30want to come back and look at it a little
2:32bit later. The other thing I've done is I
2:34've spent
2:34some time sort of categorizing my videos so
2:37the first thing you'll see when you arrive
2:39here is a
2:39home page, videos, playlists, blogs, a date
2:42and podcast. I'll talk a bit about that
2:43towards the
2:44end and then obviously social links. Now
2:47this I'm not one to sort of you know have
2:50social links all
2:51over the place this is the only place I
2:53have them literally. I was even adamant
2:55that I didn't need
2:56an about page but after talking to a few
2:57colleagues and friends about an about page
3:00seemed very
3:01necessary so I've created one but it's in
3:03very much order of sort of how I think you
3:05should
3:06interact with the channel so if you want to
3:08find out about me great. Newsletter is
3:10going to be the
3:10best way for people who maybe don't want to
3:12come to the blog every single day to check
3:14what's new
3:15they just want something in their inbox
3:17once a month just telling them what's on
3:18the blog
3:19nothing else no promo no marketing no sales
3:22bits just that. YouTube obviously if you
3:24know about
3:25this channel you hopefully already know
3:26about YouTube but for those who don't that
3:28's an
3:28alternative place to go but here's the
3:30thing it shouldn't really matter if you're
3:31on this blog
3:32everything on my YouTube channel is
3:34actually also going to be available here.
3:36The other thing is
3:37LinkedIn, Twitter, Tableau Public, Discord.
3:39Look I haven't published anything to Table
3:40au Public
3:41in a long while but people keep asking for
3:43my Tableau Public profile this year I'm
3:46obviously
3:46going to change that it's about time I
3:48publish something new to the public gallery
3:50this year so
3:51we're going to be doing that. In terms of
3:52the rest of the website when you arrive it
3:54's predominantly
3:55focusing on the latest big thing that I've
3:57done so in this case it's the 2020.4
4:00playlist and you
4:01can see here there's a big fat call to
4:02action to go ahead and watch it. As you
4:04scroll down you get
4:05a glimpse of the recent content in lots of
4:08different areas so the 2020.4 playlist is a
4:11playlist and of course you can see the
4:13three most recent playlists here as well.
4:15If I scroll down
4:17you can see the three most recent videos
4:19and the difference between a video and a
4:21playlist
4:21is essentially that a playlist is like a
4:23group of videos focused on one topic
4:25whereas a video is just
4:26that one topic on its own so that's sort of
4:28the distinction between the two when you
4:30sign up to
4:31a playlist you're signing up to something
4:33that's about an hour long maybe 30 minutes
4:35long when you
4:36sign up to a video you're just going to
4:37watch something very very brief now of
4:39course you might
4:40watch the playlist in chunks and do it in
4:42five minute chunks but it just gives you a
4:44hint of the
4:44type of content and the type of interaction
4:46that content needs so that's very much the
4:48difference
4:48between playlists and videos they're all
4:50videos but there's just that little bit of
4:52clarity between
4:53them. Last but not least I rarely write
4:55blogs and so I do actually have a blog
4:57right at the bottom
4:58here in fact if I go to the blogs pages
5:00right at the top of the page I actually
5:02call it out
5:03I much prefer to make videos and so you can
5:06see here that you know these are very very
5:08rare the
5:09last one I wrote was in April of last year
5:11it's nearly been a year since my last blog
5:13but you know
5:14when there is only one way to share
5:16something and that's written this is where
5:18you'll find it.
5:19If I go to some of the other pages now the
5:20playlist page I spend a lot of time on this
5:22I'm not going to
5:22lie I'm really passionate about the way
5:25this is laid out there's lots of effort
5:27going into
5:28making videos and I think it's very very
5:31easy to just throw videos onto YouTube and
5:33just throw
5:34videos and just record a ton of videos and
5:36you know it's very easy to do that it's
5:39very hard
5:40to make that content cohesive useful and
5:42actually give it a place where people enjoy
5:45coming back to
5:46it that's why people love going to things
5:47like Udemy that's why people love going to
5:50things like
5:50LinkedIn Learning because they create a
5:52space and a structured place for you to
5:55access that content.
5:56So what I've tried to do here is to try and
5:58create a version of that now of course this
6:00is entirely
6:01free content so it's not the same standard
6:03as Udemy with all the bookmarks and
6:05chapters but
6:06it's pretty much you know all there and I'm
6:08going to try and replicate that as much as
6:10possible so
6:11if I go into the 2020.4 playlist you'll see
6:13that the playlist has this big feature page
6:15which tells
6:16you what you're in for now because this
6:18website was designed after 2020.4 was
6:21released and this
6:22video here is actually just the first video
6:25but what I'm hoping to do is in the future
6:27this video
6:27will be a summary view so this will be a
6:29five minute ten minute summary of the
6:31entire release
6:32telling you what to expect then you'll have
6:34a playlist of items and obviously you'll
6:36see a
6:37summary of how many videos are involved how
6:39long what kind of difficulty level this is
6:42really
6:42calling out to some future content I have
6:44planned for intermediate and advanced users
6:47so this is a
6:47really really great place to sort of come
6:49and learn Tableau and of course when you
6:51click on any
6:51of these you click on them it takes you to
6:53the video straight away the video loads
6:55from YouTube
6:56so if you're used to seeing my content in
6:57YouTube and you're logged into YouTube you
6:59're going to get
7:00all the same benefits of YouTube knowing
7:01what you've watched if you're a YouTube
7:03premium
7:04subscriber you can of course download these
7:06for offline viewing which is another great
7:08sort of
7:08quality of life improvement but of course
7:11when I switch between these you'll see that
7:13the page
7:14doesn't reload it just lets you hop
7:15straight to the next video that was a
7:17really really important
7:18thing that I wanted to do I hate that
7:19friction when you go from one page to the
7:22next everything
7:22refreshes who knows what will happen if you
7:24're really focused and you just want to
7:26flick through
7:27these you really can just do that now one
7:29thing I'm also going to do is at the moment
7:31I've just
7:31got a notes section but in the future I'll
7:34also have a files tab and a transcript try
7:37because
7:37accessibility is important and getting
7:39access to the content I'm using in these
7:41videos is also
7:42important so once I have that set up in
7:44Dropbox or data.world I'm going to
7:46introduce that to the
7:48future playlists that are coming forward so
7:50that's going to be something really
7:52exciting to see and
7:53of course lots of the content at the moment
7:55is just a bulk export from my YouTube
7:57channel so
7:58some of these descriptions and I can't type
8:00I can't spell either so I'm really sorry
8:02for any
8:03typos or mistakes you see in here but once
8:05I get a chance to go back and revisit all
8:07the content that
8:08I exported I'll be cleaning that up over
8:10time and the playlist is broken down into
8:12sections desktop
8:14tableau prep server online now the key
8:16thing I've done here is desktop and web
8:18altering and now
8:19one section I very much believe that this
8:21year tableau online will become the best
8:23version of
8:24tableau to use along with the web altering
8:26experience so I'm starting to merge the
8:29definition of those two because a lot of
8:31what's possible in desktop is now possible
8:32in web
8:33altering so that's why those two are
8:34together people have asked me about that
8:36and some people
8:37are even skeptical that that's possible
8:38like it's been possible for a while so if
8:40you haven't been
8:41in tune with tableau definitely check it
8:43out definitely make sure everything is
8:45lined up for
8:46you so you can enjoy that too now the other
8:48thing to bear in mind is when we go to the
8:50videos page
8:51you'll just see these one-off videos and
8:53these are very much um you know isolated
8:55videos and they
8:56don't just contain content that I've
8:58created some of the content I've created on
9:00tableau's channel
9:01is on here this path to normalcy is the
9:03video I called out a little bit earlier on
9:05we've also got
9:06this 2020.4 playlist that I did for the
9:09information labs this is actually a two-
9:11hour live stream
9:12believe it or not and if you go in there I
9:14've spent some time doing timestamps so you
9:17don't
9:17have to worry where anything is it's all
9:19there you can access it and these actually
9:21send you off
9:22to youtube when I exported the links this
9:24is just how they work so the last thing I
9:26want to do is
9:27feature some youtubers who are also
9:29creating great tableau content this time
9:31last year I was starting
9:32out on my journey with youtube and tableau
9:34and essentially one of the hardest
9:36challenges is
9:37actually just getting people to see your
9:39videos because you're creating great
9:40content but youtube's
9:42algorithm just hates sharing your content
9:44if you're a new youtuber so one of the best
9:47ways to
9:47help out is if you find someone who's good
9:49on youtube share it far and wide and what I
9:52want to
9:52do now is show you three great youtubers
9:54that have been sharing great content that I
9:56think you should
9:56check out um first of all if you just go to
9:59the social tab here and go to my channel
10:01page you'll
10:02find that if you scroll down the channel
10:04page I actually have those youtubers
10:05featured right here
10:07in this great channels to follow section on
10:09my site so if we just scroll down here and
10:12we just
10:12look at this the first one is sequel bell
10:14now if we go to her channel it's actually
10:16really really
10:17great she's been on youtube since 2020 she
10:20's already got a thousand subscribers and
10:22she's
10:22got some absolutely stunning content if you
10:24look at some of the view counts in some of
10:26these videos
10:27they are absolute bangers bearing in mind
10:28he only just started a few months ago this
10:31is a really
10:32great place to go to find out and see some
10:34variety in lots of different ways the same
10:36video can be
10:37done by different creators and she's got a
10:39really great style for explaining things as
10:41well and I
10:41think it's just great that she's also got
10:43power bi experience she's able to do some
10:45comparisons that
10:46I just can't do because I've never used
10:48power bi and so it's good to have that
10:50variety go check out
10:51her channel subscribe to the content and
10:53make sure she's in your inbox every time
10:55she posts a video
10:56if you go to her back page here it says
10:58that she posts weekly videos and she also
11:00has something on
11:01teachable that you can subscribe to and pay
11:03for and then get something sort of suited
11:05for you so
11:05check out her channel and whatever she's up
11:08to again it's great content I've watched it
11:10I've
11:10really enjoyed it and check it out the next
11:13channel I want to focus on is another great
11:15channel this is a much much newer channel
11:18and what I'd love for everyone to do here
11:20is to absolutely
11:20go to his page and follow it it's data with
11:23barra now I hope I'm saying these names
11:25correctly as
11:26well like I never know how to pronounce
11:28youtube names now I've learned something
11:30from data with
11:31barra here and it's actually his thumbnails
11:33his thumbnails are on point now if you're a
11:36youtuber
11:36you'll know what I'm talking about if you
11:38don't it's pretty hard to understand but
11:40what I'm going
11:40to say is his thumbnails are very
11:42descriptive they get to the point and they
11:44make you want to
11:45click and watch the content but when you
11:47actually get into the content the content's
11:49even better
11:50he's got a great design a great theme here
11:52on this channel it's really well done and
11:54he explains it
11:55from a very technical point of view when he
11:57talks about the tablo file types I did a
11:59video on this
11:59I did actual playlists on this but he's
12:01done it in a completely different way they
12:03're really different
12:04twang and I think you should really go in
12:06there and check out the content I
12:07personally really
12:08really enjoyed it it makes me think more
12:10about the way I'm recording videos and
12:12doing content
12:13it makes me realize there's lots of
12:14different ways of articulating the same
12:16point but what's great
12:17about youtube is that instead of me having
12:19to think about all those ways I can do it
12:21my way
12:21and you can also enjoy barrow's way as well
12:23so that's another great channel to check
12:25out
12:26literally just started in the last few
12:28months last four months only on 200
12:30subscribers come on let's
12:31get everyone on our channel to go on here
12:34and subscribe you'll have three great you
12:36tubers coming
12:37into your inbox almost weekly or monthly
12:40now if I go back to my channel page here
12:42and I go to
12:42Andre is actually a close friend and
12:45colleague of mine Andre is a great
12:47developer now he's been
12:48creating lots of developer focused content
12:51especially for tablo he does this on the
12:54information lab channel and also on his own
12:56channel here and what's great about his
12:58content
12:59is that it's for those people who are
13:00really super technical people who want to
13:02understand
13:03cloud technology developing for tablo
13:06extensions apis andres channel has really
13:09got this on lock
13:10his best series is his embedding tablo
13:12series that's one of the best things I've
13:14watched
13:15on youtube related to tablo involving apis
13:17or development so absolutely go check out
13:20his channel
13:21make sure you subscribe that's three great
13:23channels you're going to absolutely enjoy I
13:25guarantee you'll enjoy all the content they
13:27produce because in many ways it's better if
13:29not
13:30like far better than what I'm making so go
13:33check it out go subscribe and hopefully you
13:35'll have four
13:36youtubers creating great content for you on
13:39a frequent basis again that's pretty much
13:41it for
13:42the video it's been a bit of a long one I
13:43try to keep it short but in the end it didn
13:45't quite work
13:46out so here we are this is what it is so if
13:48you've liked the video you know what to do
13:512021 is here
13:53we've got lots of content planned and lots
13:55of changes still to come lots of ideas
13:57still to
13:58come out and shared I've got lots of
14:00different ideas buzzing in my mind but I'm
14:02just glad we've
14:03got tablotim.com out and now we have a home
14:05for our videos go check it out if you haven
14:08't
14:08done so already otherwise I'll catch you in
14:10the next video
It’s 2021 and we’re back to releasing new videos. In this one, I briefly outline the new website Tableautim.com and I also take a moment to highlight three great channels you should be following that are also releasing tableau content on a frequent basis. Check them out!
