New Native Chart types in Tableau | Viz Extensions Deep Dive
Tristan from La Data Viz shows me how viz extensions let anyone build native, fully custom chart types in Tableau — and it might be the biggest shift since I started using the tool.
- Viz extensions replace VizQL rendering with web-hosted code (JavaScript, SVG, D3, Canvas), so any chart you can build on the web can now live inside a Tableau worksheet
- Extensions on the Tableau Exchange are vetted by Tableau partners, so charts there are quality-checked before you install them
- Custom charts support native-feeling interactions including tooltips, multi-select with ctrl/cmd, filter actions and set/parameter actions, just like built-in chart types
- Formatting panels built into extensions (colour, stroke, legends, zones) give more granular control than many native Tableau chart types offer out of the box
- You can build fully custom, branded chart presets (like a company's standard bar chart style) so users just drag and drop without re-styling every time

0:00New child types are about to grace Tableau in 24.
0:032 and I had the opportunity to spend two hours with Tristan from La DataViz.
0:08about what him and Jessica have been building as part of this capability coming very soon.
0:13He walked me through all the new capabilities they've got as well as showing me some new ones that are going to launch with this version of Tableau.
0:20We've actually had a two-hour conversation.
0:23So what I've done is I've split that up into three videos.
0:25Today we're talking about Viz extensions.
0:28Over the weekend, you'll see a new video talking about his journey leading to this point.
0:33And then in a couple of weeks time we'll see one more video about the Figmented Tableau plugin.
0:38But as ever, let's get started.
0:39I guess it's now it's probably a good time now to to to come to sort of what you're doing.
0:43And before we do that, I think it's really important to sort of touch on something, which is
0:47In the last year and a half, every week I open my Twitter feed or LinkedIn feed, I see a chart not posted by you, but has been enabled by you.
0:57And it's been it's been absolutely incredible to see
1:01You've basically brought the the you know the hearts and minds of people who've been really frustrated with the design capabilities in Tableau, the ability to do things and tell stories that that uh you know they've wanted to tell for so long.
1:13And I think even your
1:15You add this uh thing as soon as you release that.
1:18I I saw 10-20 visits where people just quickly did something that they they wanted to do for a while but just couldn't be bothered to look at, you know, not couldn't be bothered, couldn't be bothered as harsh, but the effort
1:28to to do that was not justified, right?
1:31It's not.
1:31And I'm part of these people.
1:33Like the the fun funny thing is like I have never
1:37made uh visualization like an advanced visualization in the way of data identification, table calculation, like because like for me is it always sounded so
1:50So much work kind of to achieve something and knowing a bit of programming.
1:56Yeah.
1:56Like if you want to if you want to use these three to make a song kit is is
2:00It feels much more easier, right?
2:02Yeah.
2:03People are afraid of code usually.
2:04Like people see that and be like, oh, that's complicated.
2:07But I swear it's easier than having to go through all of the steps to make a Sunki and
2:11these kind of things right so yeah for me it's like no I'm going to skip that part and directly try to to to make it and the the first visualization was uh the network diagram very first that I did in 2019 was a network
2:25And it was just like a network is even more simple because it's just circles and lines.
2:31Yes.
2:32Tableau can do circles and lines.
2:34It's just how do I calculate the position of the circles and the lines, right?
2:38Correct
2:38So I use these three to calculate those positions and then say okay now I have the x and the y coordinates of everything.
2:46Tableau, please make put circles and put lines at those coordinates and it made a
2:51Yeah, exactly.
2:52Yeah.
2:52It's interesting how you break that down as well because although you didn't do that identification and you essentially didn't go through the mathematics of making that happen.
3:01You kind of did it through another way.
3:03You did it through programming and you just took what you needed, which was the output, and then you just you you gave it to Tableau as is.
3:09And so
3:10I think this, you know, there are going to be people watching this who want to get into development or think development is a very big, you know, difficult thing.
3:17Actually, you know, your journey should act as an example to people that first you start by breaking down the problem.
3:24And then you take each of those parts and you apply it to something that you already know.
3:29So you don't have to go and rebuild VisQL or you know the render engine.
3:34You just need to understand how Tableau works.
3:37And dare I say with Chat GPT today, I mean people people can get very far.
3:42Even I've I've had crazy, crazy results building uh things that I just
3:47I don't think I could have built a year and a half ago had it not been for things like ChatGPT.
3:52So you can get very close to what you want.
3:54And then on top of that, you've got people like yourselves in the data dev community who you can get into a Slack, you can get into a meeting with.
4:01And uh you can ask those questions and even Tableau themselves put developers there.
4:05And before you know it, if you're just persistent, you can actually pull together something like add this, right?
4:10Which just lets people build something.
4:13And then once you've solved that problem, the next mountain isn't so big anymore.
4:16It's like you're already halfway up, right?
4:18And then you just keep going and next thing you know
4:20Um you've got uh Lidata Viz uh Mark II or whatever.
4:24Yeah, it's it's it's really brick by like is that is the thing, it's brick by brick.
4:29At the beginning the the the very
4:31First version of Advis was really just that was okay.
4:34If I put my data and I export it in a CSV, it does something.
4:37Okay, now what if I make a UI where people can put the data and then it returns the CSV
4:44Right.
4:44The the the calculated data.
4:46Yeah.
4:47And then I get, well, if I already have the calculated data, why do I not put it already in a
4:53pre like a pre-rendered kind of uh workbook.
4:58Yeah.
4:58So when you click on download, it doesn't give you the data, but it gives you the workbook that has that data inside.
5:04And then so then okay, that works.
5:06Okay, now what if I make it a bit more more beautiful?
5:09What if I put this and that?
5:10So people see the result that we have right now and be like, wow, that is
5:15That is incredible.
5:16You have done a lot, but it's also like just years of weekly small incremental change, right?
5:23Every and I think that's that's what people say, no, like you you you over
5:29Yeah, you usually underestimate how much you can do in in a year or something like that.
5:34And that's completely true.
5:35It's like on a weekly basis, I feel that
5:38We our progress are really slow, like extremely slow.
5:41We should have been able to do much more than that.
5:44But then you look back from a year, two years ago, and you're like, okay, no, we have done a lot, right?
5:49So it's always that kind of difficult.
5:53Yeah.
5:54That that that phrase you said, I heard it for the first time in the context of Apple.
5:58Um the the developer Apple developer was saying that
6:01you tend to overestimate short-term progress and you underestimate long-term gains.
6:06And and it's it it just really hit me and it's like, yes, that that is exactly that is nearly always the way with
6:12these sort of great accomplishments you see out in you know on LinkedIn wherever, people have been shipping away at these things for for for quite some time and I I think
6:20Again, I've I've had the privilege of watching your journey throughout the years.
6:23I think many people have maybe only discovered you in the last, you know, um two years.
6:27Uh Lad DataViz has probably only landed in people's inbox for the last uh year and a half, but
6:33It's really hard to forget that you've been on that journey for for quite some time.
6:36So if anyone is out there thinking, how do I start?
6:39I think you just just listen to Tristan, what he's doing now.
6:42And
6:43Get started because you never know where we'll end up.
6:46And and I would what you you your point about ChatGPT it was completely true.
6:52We would not
6:53Have we will be maybe halfway without chat at the at that time because yeah to make product online and to there is so many small components and it's really hard to know everything.
7:04So usually that's why also we can only afford to be just two.
7:07Yeah.
7:08Because actually we are not a team of two, we are a team of three.
7:10If you count Chat GPT, right?
7:12It is another one.
7:13Maybe five, yeah.
7:15Exactly.
7:15It counts maybe for for more than one more people, but like it is it's true that when you
7:21want to try a new API when we started to build the Figma plugin?
7:25It's like well it's a brand new world of the Figma.
7:29How do you start right and and then just really be able to have
7:34To have um a way to have answers to your question, but specific answer, right?
7:42Not not what you find on Google necessarily, but like hey, I have this specific
7:46code that I want to kind of try to to to build.
7:52Can you can you guide me through or tell me what is not working and I mean it's
7:57It's really, really helping us a lot.
7:59Good.
8:00Good.
8:00Yeah.
8:01Um yeah, people underestimate the power of those tools.
8:04I think, you know, you think it's a chat bot.
8:06I don't use it as a chatbot.
8:07at all.
8:07I use it as a way of making my mind think.
8:09I use it as a troubleshooter.
8:11I I rarely use the the the answers or Google search like
8:16Capabilities, that that's a sort of a different world.
8:18But anyway, look, we've we've talked a lot.
8:20I know people are desperate to understand uh the two things you've built.
8:24So let's start with Viz extensions.
8:26Um like in your own words, what are Viz extensions and what have you built to sort of enable that?
8:32I sort of give the floor to you to to showcase what you've built.
8:35Because I think it's incredible.
8:36And I think um
8:37Uh yeah, 24.
8:382 is going to be it I don't know about you.
8:41Do you not think 24.
8:422 is a huge release?
8:44Like I I know there's lots of negativity and stuff, and I'm just like
8:47What is wrong with people?
8:48This is this is a bagger release.
8:50This is a big release.
8:51Like I of course you and I would be excited, but yeah.
8:55It has been nuance for me since since we didn't have such a big release, right?
8:59Yes.
9:00Exactly.
9:01Exactly.
9:02Because and and I think maybe it's because when you when you just look at it from like a um an announcement perspective, it's like okay we did this, this and that, but it's understanding
9:12how big the impact will be going forward with those YouTube, right?
9:17Correct.
9:17And yeah.
9:18And that's I think will come through time when when because it's a bit hard to
9:22to okay with extension yeah but when you have been like us working with it is like this is probably the biggest change in Tableau since I started using it.
9:31Yeah like honestly this is how it feels
9:34I like I started in 2015 and I don't think there has ever been um release in Tableau desktop, right?
9:43Or in the the way we build visualization that has
9:46that big of an impact.
9:47Correct.
9:48Correct?
9:49Like because even you could say like no like a parameter action or those things had a huge impact in the way people
9:56interact with the or made a dashboard to interact.
9:59And that is true, but all of this interaction, everything that you can now imagine, every
10:05visualization that you have seen ever on the web from from the people who write those books behind me like really like really the
10:13The the master chief of visualization you can now do all of that inside of.
10:17So that's what is this extension.
10:19Is really yeah
10:21all the capabilities of that were that that are available on when you hard code it right using JavaScript can be using SVG, Canva, D3 or any library.
10:35Right now you can have that inside tableau inside your worksheet when you drag and drop elements.
10:41So when you drag and
10:43Before 2024.
10:442, it will always be this QL that will render your chart.
10:49It will be a bar chart, a line chart with the marks that you are available.
10:54So circle, square, line.
10:56Polygon, those kind of things, right?
10:59Now, once you use a vis extension in your marks
11:04You actually when you drag and drop something, it is no longer VSQL that is rendering in your in your tabloid environment.
11:12It is actually calling
11:14a web page like code that is hosted somewhere can be local, can be on the cloud, can be it's it just render codes inside Tableau.
11:23And then you can program
11:25absolutely anything anything like as a as a demo I say well if you could um you could play like and and I think that's that's how people sometimes understand
11:36better is like if you I think you remember when uh Merlin at some point he made like uh Mario in in tableau um desktop using uh an extension yeah well it's exactly that is like as long as you can
11:51run some code inside tableau you can call anything right yeah you could like as a drag and drop I call chat gpt to tell me what I'm what I'm drag and dropping into my correct in my
12:03You can you can yeah it's really it's it's a bl a new blank page, but this time completely blank in like when I drop when I drag and drop category in
12:15in my marks yeah what is getting render by that you could have a a Tetris game that renders
12:22cut the category and you you can do anything you want, right?
12:26Yeah, yeah, exactly.
12:27It's it I was saying to Ravi, uh Ravi Mystery, you know, we were talking a bit about
12:33how how this is also a big deal for businesses because a lot of businesses in the past have been confined by what Tableau describes a chart to be.
12:42But the example we talked about is is is a sports.
12:45If you take a golf swing, for example.
12:48With this capability, for the first time you even have the ability to do sort of video analysis because again, if you're just given a box and in that box you can put anything you want.
12:58And the data that drives that box comes from your data set, whether it's a video URL, a video player, as example, could load in there.
13:05And you could augment that with your own information coming from
13:10your marks pane, your categories, your shelf, all of that stuff could actually happen.
13:15And we're just at the beginning.
13:17So of course I'm sure these, you know, people are going to discover the edges and the boundaries, what's good to do, what's bad to do.
13:22We'll get into that in a little bit.
13:24But it just opens the doors and you don't find out where it makes sense to push those boundaries until you have the tool available.
13:31So
13:31I feel like this is version one and I think in three, four years time after it's been out for a while, we're gonna we're gonna find out, okay, now here's what it can really do, because people will have had time with the tools to get familiar.
13:43And y I'm sure you've got things that you're thinking about.
13:46Asking the developers, hey, can you do this?
13:48Can you do this?
13:49Because you know, you know, that's going to enable you to do things that people are coming to you with ideas for, right?
13:57Yeah, exactly.
13:58And if you stay in the sports analogy, because we also work with um with a company that is around uh sports, and there is always
14:06And I think uh if if there are like people who are in the consulting world, they always have clients who d they don't know tableau and about can you make a radar chart or can you make uh for example recently was the network of the past
14:19during a game, right?
14:20So they want each player in their position and then links when the those two players have passed the ball and then the width
14:28of the of the link will be how how much pass, right?
14:31Yes.
14:32Okay, well now you just drag and drop players and you drag and drop pass, number of pass, and you have it.
14:39That easy
14:40There is so yeah exactly.
14:42So I think that's that's the main there is two parts for for this extension.
14:46One is the tool that we are developing and that we will release and we can make a small demo so people understand more.
14:54Yeah, absolutely.
14:54And that will be new charts type.
14:57Yeah.
14:57Sunky, network, stream graph, tree diagram, every like advan like more um advanced charts.
15:05But you will still
15:07kind of be confined to what we think is a sanky or what we think is a diagram, right?
15:13Is the way you drag and drop still pre-render something.
15:17So that is one part.
15:18But what we really want to
15:21people to understand also and and I I I hope that it will also unlock more business on that side for us is like people will reach out
15:29Because they have a really custom need to have that chart that works for them.
15:34And it's like, no, when I drag and when I use my um player
15:39like um a past network of my player I don't like it's always the same data and yeah we always want it rendered the same way so I just need to drag and drop two things and I want that to be already the result.
15:52Correct you can also be like
15:53Whenever a company make their own bar chart or whatever, their line chart, it already has by default exactly the color, the style that they want, presets.
16:03Right.
16:03So I don't
16:04think twice.
16:05They it's already how it's supposed to look.
16:09Um yeah from that's it I hadn't thought of that actually.
16:13Yeah recreating the standard chart type so people don't have to think about how they look.
16:17That's just it's a classic one.
16:18And from an accessibility perspective, that's also fantastic as well, because you can you can codify things in the web better than you can do them in in in sort of VizQL, right?
16:28So loads of opportunity there.
16:30And that's also the the frustration that we have with sometimes clients who don't know tableau is they want they see visualization on the web, right?
16:39And it's oh can we have those those rounded bar corners, right?
16:42Yeah.
16:42Or we can have them
16:43gradient style and and like no we we cannot we cannot and I think now is like while you are purely rendering web chart S VGs
16:51Yeah.
16:52You can do anything you want with them.
16:54If you when you pass your your when you over over a bar chart, yeah, instead of the standard
17:00uh like you know line that is and the column that you can modify you can now well if you push you put your mouse over the bar kind of infl like you can imagine whatever you want to anything you want yeah
17:12Yeah.
17:21Tableau has this problem, right, where
17:23Tableau will say something is coming out, then there'll be a lot of hype, and then it comes out and it's missing something, and people are like, oh, it's not good enough.
17:30So
17:31Another thing I like to tell people is that this is version one and Tableau in the last, let's say, two years is that they've not just brought something out and stopped.
17:39They've added features continuously.
17:42for about seven, eight releases before you start to get to like a mature level.
17:46So I think people have to do two things.
17:48First of all, get 24-2, try it out, understand it.
17:51We'll get onto the complexities after you've you've sort of showed us a demo.
17:54But then secondly, um, give it time, give feedback.
17:58Uh feedback to people like Tristan, feedback to people like Tableau so they can understand what it is that's missing to kind of really build on the platform.
18:07Yes.
18:08Yeah, I think it is it's great that it's there.
18:12There are still missing parts.
18:14Yes.
18:16Things that we can build, things that we cannot, that Tableau has to to give us the option to.
18:23Yeah.
18:23But I think it's definitely going in a more open direction.
18:28And I think that's that's what we needed.
18:30Good.
18:31Well, um let me give you the floor and you can maybe just show people an example of how how it works.
18:37So really the new
18:39The new thing is in your marks and right now I'm using Tableau Desktop uh 2024.
18:452.
18:45Yep.
18:47So you will have now the these extension here, right?
18:50Yeah.
18:51So there is a the main the easiest way to try this extension is you click on this button and then you will see the list of
19:00available these extensions that are on the tableau exchange, right?
19:04Right.
19:04So for a visualization to appear there
19:08uh to appear in in the exchange, it needs to be a tableau partner uh that created the the
19:16the extension.
19:17Yeah.
19:17And we went through like a process of verification.
19:21Uh the tableau developer checked the the the extension, tried it.
19:26uh give give some feedback to make sure that it's working right right so you are sure that what you see here should be high quality so let's take uh the three tree diagram
19:36You have some small explanation.
19:38Yeah.
19:38And we will complete that with a demo, but you click open.
19:42And then now that's the the big new thing is in your marks.
19:46You no longer have line bound, you have a tree diagram, right?
19:50Nice.
19:50And and what we did is we have this small start page because it's a new chart app, so not everyone will know how to use it.
19:56So for us, I will.
19:57To use a tree diagram, you just drag and rub dimension on detail and you will start making things.
20:02Right?
20:02Yeah.
20:03So just to stop you very briefly, you've you've built this feature here.
20:10And it's still a blank sheet.
20:11Is that correct?
20:13This yeah.
20:14So basically we have said if you have no information in the marks
20:19Then we give you a splash screen that explains you how to use it.
20:23So this is this is the web page that that that renders that, right?
20:28So when you I'm gonna stop you because this is incredible.
20:31Tableau's been building Tableau for twenty years and you as a developer have beat them to this.
20:38Because
20:39Why why isn't this on every chart?
20:41If you go put a blank go go to a bar chart, why why why why do you not yes?
20:48This is this is genius.
20:49This is genius.
20:50Like I'm sorry.
20:52I I just blew my mind.
20:56I was like, come on, where is like that is incredible.
20:59I've used I've used your extensions, but I
21:01I had not noticed this bit, which is just so good.
21:05This is nearly.
21:07We are getting very close to it.
21:12This is this is so obvious now.
21:14Like
21:14Tableau have to do this.
21:15I'm sorry.
21:19This is this is what it's good, right?
21:21It shows that the community can actually develop
21:23something faster than Tableau and and come to ideas that just so obvious.
21:29And maybe this is in the ideas page already, but
21:32My word, can you imagine?
21:34Jeez, that's such a good use of whitespace, honestly.
21:37I think this this is this this is the feature of the year.
21:39I'm gonna I'm going to talk about this more than anything else.
21:43Just look you you think you know what to do.
21:46Yeah, we can end the video here.
21:47I'm done.
21:48This is this is what Table needs.
21:51Sorry to break your flow, but uh I'll I'll let you carry on.
21:54This is fantastic.
22:03So yeah.
22:04So how I'm going to drop something.
22:06So it will go away, but you will have
22:09something new.
22:09So now I just put category.
22:11So we have our three three categories, right?
22:14And of course to build a tree I will need something else.
22:16So let me put subcategory and we have now the subcategory.
22:19So really drag and drop and and here we just have size or detail so you can maybe probably use like the the size like this and then you you have recreated that
22:30Amazing.
22:30And so simple.
22:36Right.
22:36So for us, we put a few um emphasis on um a few things.
22:41First, the default color that you see
22:43should be for us in our mind and I don't know I I'm not sure if all the other partners follow that but for us is like we want people to feel like they are inside tableau.
22:53So the the color style egg when you over over that kind of the tooltip that is displayed, everything should look and feel like tableau in our in our mind.
23:04Yeah.
23:04But
23:05We also know that people usually want to go beh beyond what Tableau usually allows.
23:10So that's why we have this format extension
23:12And when you click on that, this is also something we have completely custom coded, right?
23:18Nice.
23:19And we also made sure that compared to, for example, if you open the sort, we actually
23:25Took the color, the the the style, the kind of you notice really small difference, but basically.
23:36Copy what tableau has and I I guess they are happy with that because it makes a better integrated like I feel experience.
23:43And then from there, that that is really where um you can configure your tree or your your advanced chart.
23:50In ways that those marks are not um they are not enough, right?
23:57So for example, for a tree you could have a um horizontal layout, you could have a root that says
24:03example sales and then you have a bit more more information right you can increase decrease the size a lot of things that are that are really specific to
24:13to the um to the tree diagram, right?
24:16Yeah.
24:16And it would be impossible to have all of that in just just custom um
24:21Cards, uh marks, right?
24:23Yeah.
24:23For the column.
24:24And this one is a bit specific and I can enter in we can discuss that maybe later, like a bit
24:29how and and the design choice that we have to make.
24:32So here you click uh you want to color by category and you have your different category.
24:37You be do I want the color on the notes, the links or both.
24:40Yeah.
24:40And then palette that we already have by default.
24:44So by default it would be the tableau one, but we also put observable that is a new.
24:48We put some special that are 24.
24:51So you have different colors.
24:53Very nice.
24:54But at any point you can be, I want to change this and then make um furniture and red, yeah, and and do your own colors, right?
25:02And this is this will be set.
25:03You have a small legend that you can display, you can change the label and you can here change everything around the sheet.
25:09So do I want to feed the hate the
25:12With the height or do I want to have custom custom one?
25:16So that's also really close to what Tableau.
25:19Um
25:20that we would be used to with Tableau, right?
25:23Background color on those.
25:24Yeah.
25:24I think out of the box you've also done more customization than you'd get with the default chart in Tableau, if that makes sense.
25:31I think
25:31you've given so much more granular control and these small controls just just take those charts to the next level.
25:41Like in a very small way, but they just
25:43You go from being very familiar, you know, what you started with, to being something you didn't think was done in Tableau because someone would look at that and go, Oh yeah, you can't control the line color.
25:53That's not that's not a tableau feature.
25:54Well, no, you can.
25:56It's native now.
25:57Perfect.
25:58The stroke of the text, right?
26:01So many things.
26:02So many things.
26:03It's amazing.
26:04Oh, the stroke of the text.
26:05That's a nice touch.
26:06Yeah, the the
26:08The the yes, the out outline of oh that's so good.
26:12Especially when you've got noisy charts.
26:14Oh that looks so good.
26:15Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
26:17Yeah.
26:17I've played with this and I didn't even notice half of these features.
26:20I must have not played with it enough.
26:27Okay, fine, fine.
26:28Good.
26:28That's that's the tree.
26:29And then if you go, for example, to one that is maybe an again completely um like let's say Radial Sankey I like I like this one for something.
26:39Um
26:42Put over, let's let's put back our tree here, and I will just say three.
26:48And normally if you so
26:50Uh if you just change the color of something, right?
26:53When you close that configuration window, so let's let's put it back like this and add a root and call it sales.
27:01And maybe for the color, I'm just going to put
27:04This one.
27:05So when you close that window or when you click on this button, that's where you kind of save your preference, right?
27:12So now inside
27:14that workbook inside that worksheet we have saved the preference of the the look and and feel right so if I go to another worksheet and I come back or if I close and I open this will be saved
27:28So now for the radial sun kit, this one you can see is different.
27:31We have source, target, size, and again we have the we have uh our our start page, right?
27:36So we need to drag an upper dimension on source and on target.
27:40Very good.
27:40So we can go category, let's put subcategory, and we have our chart.
27:47Excellent.
27:47And you can put sales inside
27:50And in that case, for example, we can you have color, right?
27:53So you can put category in color because that's the source, right?
27:58Nice.
27:58Or you could color by subcategory.
28:01Right.
28:02And now each subcategory has um a different color.
28:06They are they are repeating because tableau only has ten, but you could you could make them a different
28:10Yeah, yeah.
28:10And now it's a bit interesting because what what should happen if you use segment in color?
28:17Segment in color.
28:18Oh, so you should split the technologies into the different segments
28:24So should we have more source or more targets?
28:29Oh good question.
28:31Both.
28:32Because you'd have to do that.
28:34So that's that's where for us is like, okay, we need to put some limitation.
28:38So if you use segmenting color
28:41We say you can only use categories subcategories at a time.
28:43Very smart.
28:44Yeah.
28:44You've caught the user, so they don't make a mistake.
28:46Yeah.
28:47Exactly.
28:48Because at some point we cannot allow you
28:51to yeah to to like it will break the chart or it will make things that are not coherent with what you see.
28:57So we try to avoid that.
28:59So that's why if you can and the tree was exactly that.
29:03For the tree
29:04You cannot use drag and drop color because the the only dimension that should exist for your tree is your detail, right?
29:12Is the level that you are.
29:14But adding any other
29:17color would break things right because you would because it's a tree, it's a hierarchy, it's not yeah, it's not one color.
29:23Yeah, yeah.
29:29And you put segment or whatever.
29:31The underlying data that Tableau gives us will be deaggregated to the level of the subcategory, subcategory, and segment.
29:40But then the tree will not know where to rent.
29:44Exactly.
29:44Or it will have multiple columns for one category or one subcategory, right?
29:49Yeah.
29:50So that's that's the kind of difficulty we have to run.
29:53But in that case, for example, in this one, you can put profit on on colon and then there you can see the
29:58The infamous we have an issue on the tables, right?
30:01But just in a yeah, this yeah, yeah, yeah and then from there also because
30:06To render this, we really take what Tableau gives us as the data that is rendered from that, right?
30:13So it's really when you when you right-click and you say view data, that's what the web page receives.
30:19So if you would
30:21Um sort your subcategory and you will be like, I want to sort them by the field that is the sales.
30:29It will automatically re-render
30:33Yeah that's very so and and so and and it's really the position of what you what you have put here so we have subcategory first right so they are sorted
30:44In the within each category.
30:51So it really respect the logic that you have when you use stamina.
30:56Very good.
30:57Very good.
30:58Oh that that gives that that also makes the design element a function of the data rather than
31:06Exactly.
31:07Yeah, something arbitrary, which it is very easy to make mistake with, and you can actually end up kind of creating something that doesn't make visual sense.
31:13Like visual communication is relying on the data to kind of work.
31:16It's it's really good.
31:17Love it.
31:18Yeah.
31:19And here I will just put something a bit different.
31:22I will just put country and uh maybe region and country.
31:27just for the next demo because I think that's an important part also.
31:32If you make um a dashboard uh and you let's put the tree let's put
31:38this and we could also have like a really stunt doesn't need to be uh advanced chart or whatever.
31:42But what we also have make sure is like that the you have you have the the
31:48That you can use it and that you can also use this as filter so whenever you can
31:57Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:58And this is this is I'm assuming this is work that Tableau have done in the background.
32:02You've told does Tableau feed you the actions or like yeah, what's going on in the background there?
32:07Because that that's that
32:08That sort of really impressed me when this was announced.
32:11I went in to do my actions and it all just works.
32:13So what are you doing to enable that, if that makes sense?
32:17So what do we do to enable that?
32:19Um a lot of coding.
32:21So actually we don't have we just have um a function that allows you to let
32:29your dashboard know what to filter.
32:33Right.
32:34So it is it is even it it's to that level of complexity.
32:37So when I click on Netherlands.
32:40Yeah
32:41It's my job as the developer to know that the user has clicked on Netherlands.
32:47Netherlands.
32:48Put that value and then filter the rest.
32:52To that specific uh ID, right?
32:56Okay.
32:57Yeah.
32:57That's kind of
32:59Because if you control that, you can build really interesting ways of filtering into the into the chart as well, right?
33:06Like yeah.
33:06You could also make really easily mistakes.
33:09So for example, you could click on Netherlands and here will be something else
33:12We had the the case a few times, but yeah, it's it's uh it's it's a long it's a it's a challenge.
33:21It's not as easy as well Tableau recognize it because basically
33:24There is our web page that needs to send the right information.
33:28To the next one.
33:29Right.
33:36Let me just put the
33:38the categories in color.
33:40What we really have tried to do is that you should feel like you are in tableau, right?
33:45So for example if I click on one and I hit control or command in in the Mac.
33:49You can do multi selection, right?
33:52Yes.
33:52Yes.
33:57Wow.
33:58So you've you've really obeyed fundamental what I would call user experience norms of Tableau, right?
34:04You've you've taken your usage of Tableau and you've not just done these things and so oh it's fine if they just you know no
34:10You've really stuck to all the things that people expect to do.
34:13And so you can just replace an old chart you've had before that you've wanted as a Sankey with this one because it will just replace your old chart with actions and everything.
34:22You switch them over and you're done.
34:24Yes.
34:26No, exactly.
34:26Is that is you you are correct.
34:29And then what we have been doing, and that's maybe another example I wanted to show you.
34:34So let me just
34:37Let me just go back here.
34:39So once so yeah, if you want to add an extension that is not
34:44on the exchange, right?
34:46You can access local vis extensions.
34:48So local vis extension are like T-Rex file.
34:51So you can see here we have the different our different T-Rex file when it's at dev.
34:55the dev version or the production version of our extension.
34:58And basically here anyone uh so you work for a company, you want to build a a custom chart, you can build like a
35:06T Rex file that will specify what are the marks card that you are available.
35:13And then you need to code, of course, the the result, right?
35:17So I can show you something that is a bit new, like for example, we have the gauge that is also.
35:24Everyone loves gauges.
35:25Exactly.
35:27So you have this and then you
35:29Drag and drop a measure on value and if you want to target.
35:32So you just put sales on value and then you have the value of your sales, right?
35:36That's easy.
35:36Yeah.
35:37That is easy.
35:38And then you can format and be like, well, of course.
35:40What I have is like
35:42By let's say a hundred thousand.
35:44Let's do another one of a hundred thousand and let's add another section.
35:49You can give it like zones, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:53Exactly.
35:53So you have your different your different zones.
35:56And then again here is like free for all.
35:59So you can really have you have different style of your gouch.
36:03You can change the the like that background color.
36:06Of course, you can change the color of this.
36:07So let's
36:08Let's put blue.
36:10Um you can s change the start and and angle.
36:13The needle do you want this style, this style?
36:16uh like something like that uh square so you can you can do again whatever you anything you want
36:25Every anything you want.
36:27You can let's add uh let's add a target.
36:29So for example, let's put maximum of let's say our target is
36:3435 350 something like that.
36:38Let's see.
36:39And then you have the target, right?
36:40There you go.
36:41And the same if you forget, you can be what is
36:45How how does our target look like?
36:47Do we want the title?
36:48Do we want to minute?
36:50Yeah, yeah.
36:51Really full control.
36:52And I think I like the thing I like about this is these are just
36:57Charts.
36:57Like I'm not uh it's not it's not criticism per se, but I think you've just focused on the charts being charts.
37:03You've not tried to do anything else on top of that.
37:06uh as well.
37:07So I think they're very accessible to users.
37:09Everyone knows what a gauge is.
37:11Everyone knows what a you know um I I say everyone.
37:14That's not technically true.
37:16With experience, if you want to build a gauge, you know how a gauge works and therefore you've already sort of investigated it and all the things you'd expect to be able to change, you've made available here.
37:26So it's really straightforward for someone to find their way through
37:31And that's a bit of a funny topic about uh an ongoing discussion with Jessica and I.
37:37So because we're just two and we build those things.
37:39It's a constant battle between not adding too much because you don't want to overwhelm the user.
37:46And sometimes you feel like the gauge has a lot of configuration, right?
37:50Especially if you start to go
37:52to the um the set the um everything yeah labels so you can be okay do I want my ticks to have a label
37:59Yes, which column, which position do I want them on top, on the bottom, do I want them as do I want a prefix, suffix, decimal?
38:07You can
38:07Do I want the score?
38:08So many.
38:09Yeah.
38:12Where do I want it?
38:13Do I want it more over there?
38:14So basically what uh what Jessica did is she looked at
38:20hundreds of gauge on tableau public and and and in internet and be like oh this is an interesting style if i would want to recreate it how would i go right we would take yeah
38:31Yeah exactly.
38:32And then that's why we have we have very different style of like this one will only show you in which section you are
38:40Uh this one will display all of the sections at once, right?
38:43This one only show you up to that point and it will change color depending on where you are.
38:50Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:51It's interesting as well because I think um the two things, um, you know, when people discover a chart, they don't always know what they're looking for.
39:00So y it's a difficult problem for you to solve because what options should they have?
39:04Well, what do people want?
39:06Well, people don't know what they want until they start playing around with it.
39:09So you kind of you're kind of constantly in this sort of loop.
39:12Well you have to build just enough to enable the basic user to go forward, but then for someone who knows exactly what they want, just enough so they can get as close to
39:21to what I want.
39:21Because of course this is still Tableau.
39:23So it's not going to be like the gauge in your car, which is, you know, for for actual driving, but it's going to be something that you can kind of um customize.
39:31Nice.
39:31So yeah, we here we have a bum chart.
39:34I love this one as well.
39:34Yeah.
39:35Yeah, bum chart.
39:36And and for me is also how easy
39:39with the this extension it is compared to what we had before.
39:43Because in so for those who know Advis, you always needed to format your data in a way for us to
39:50Display that right so correct here we say well what you need is the different ID the different gear and then the rank that they have so you need to repeat the rank for so it was still you will still need to format your data to
40:04for for our tool to understand it right yeah and of course for for bum chart and I think this is one of the one that is less used of our
40:11Of a generator.
40:13And it's because it's fundamentally it's also something that moves through time.
40:16So if you cannot connect it to your real data, it's it's a problem, right?
40:20And so this is kind of the bump chart V2 of you have the axis, so let's put the order date.
40:27And then we have the rank and we want to rank by sales.
40:31And what do we want to rank?
40:32We want to rank our subcategory.
40:34And then you have like the rank of the subcategory by year, right?
40:38Yeah.
40:39If you want to change that and show it by quarter, you can show it by quarter.
40:42Of course, here we have a bit.
40:44Too much quarter, so maybe let's review.
40:46Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
40:47And and there you have it, right?
40:48Oh, there you go.
40:49And if you want to color by category, you can color by category, and then you have like an easy way to see
40:57with the tooltip and everything how your your um yeah subcategories have moved yeah and then if you go to format you can be well I'm only interested in the top five but now it's it's not that nice maybe let's reduce some
41:11Something like that.
41:12Yeah, yeah, and yeah.
41:13It's it's really about playing playing with it.
41:17Sort of configuring it.
41:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
41:19It and it is artistic.
41:20I I used to use I still use a service called LastFM and it has one of these built into the into the website, right?
41:26And so I'm gonna visualize my music taste over the last 20 years at some point and I'm gonna use your uh your plugin to do that.
41:33And it's it's it's fascinating because there's so many things in a bump chart that you have to think about.
41:41Like for example, what happens when something goes off the chart?
41:44Like where is that?
41:45How do you interact with it?
41:46Um, all these labels, you know, these nodes.
41:49And when you're really dialing those in, you make artistic choices, you make you make some decisions about what is valuable.
41:55And you know, for some people, this is more valuable, just seeing those lines and seeing that things change position, right?
42:00And so the the thing to remember is this is still a tableau chart, right?
42:04It's still interactable.
42:05It's still got lots of really interesting things, right?
42:08So
42:09Those stories, you can use uh set actions, you can use parameter actions, you can use filters just to add all of that storytelling into that.
42:19Yeah.
42:20If if right now I want to go to order date and just focus on 2024, right?
42:25And on 2024 I want to see the monthly evolution.
42:29Yeah.
42:29Then I have the monthly evolution.
42:31Yeah, yeah.
42:32So you take one of Andy Kriebel's videos, like three level drill down into something, you can you can zoom into like a quarter or zoom into like a year or something.
42:41It's gonna be
42:42It's going to be really, really powerful.
42:44Um and and you know, we've also got in 2014, we've got the the uh multi-fact analysis.
42:49So
42:50I just I just keep thinking of I bet you someone somewhere is gonna do take one of your charts and do something ridiculous because they can use multiple dimensions in a data model to really add colour to this in a in an interesting way.
43:04So wowzers.
43:06It's it's crazy.
43:09I have to say well done.
43:10I I like again to just think I just started my journey ten years ago and probably in the last three years
43:16You've been traveling at 110 miles per hour, but you've been building mem momentum to get to where you are.
43:22It's incredible.
43:23It's really incredible
43:24Well and and I would say it's you also when when when Jessica joined the company in September last year
43:32I was I really also said in the newsletter hopefully people will be able to see more things going on.
43:38Yeah.
43:38Because also as a one person it was really difficult and what I'm I'm making the demo of
43:45Of like currently the Viz extension, but almost all Viz extension has been built by Jessica while I focus on the Figma plugin, right?
43:52So browsers, yeah.
43:54She she has done most of these these things, like for example, the radar.
43:57I'm going to finish because we could we I could just show them all, but like radar bag, yeah the one that she did recently.
44:04It's incredible.
44:05Let's look at the subcategories and maybe the sales field value and and here you have a right out of the side.
44:11Music to my ears.
44:12Music to my ears.
44:14I have um I have a visualization that I've had in mind around music listening and I tried to do a radio chart ages ago and it was so hard.
44:21So hard.
44:22And and now this this is just gonna make it dead easy.
44:25Um so I cannot wait
44:27to see what people do with it.
