Native browser printing in Tableau. - New in Tableau 2022.2

0:00In Tableau 22.2 Tableau now supports native

0:02browser printing. It took a while but it's

0:05finally

0:05here. Let's get stuck in. Okay so I'm here

0:07on a dashboard that's showing the data

0:09storage

0:09capability. The reason I've gone to this

0:11dashboard is because the native browser

0:13printing also

0:14supports printing of extensions.

0:16Essentially anything in an extension gets

0:19rendered and

0:19this particular data stories element is

0:21actually an extension. So we're going to

0:23check to see how

0:24it renders. Now the cool thing about this

0:27is you can just hit command p or control p

0:29on windows

0:30and it instantly renders what you'd see in

0:32the print preview and you can go from here

0:34and

0:34essentially print it out. You do have more

0:36settings depending on the browser that you

0:39're

0:39using so the browser will typically render

0:41the settings in different ways so just be

0:43sure to

0:43check the settings but in essence you can

0:45control pretty much everything you'd expect

0:47to control.

0:48The size of the paper, how many pages per

0:50sheet and you can even change the scaling.

0:52Now one thing

0:52I found difficult here in Chrome, I'm not

0:54sure if this is just a Chrome thing or if

0:56it's a feature

0:56specific thing but if you choose the

0:58default scaling it essentially just takes

1:00the visualization

1:01and puts it onto A4 in the native

1:03resolution of the visualization. There's

1:05nothing smart that

1:06sort of scales it to fit the page. I couldn

1:08't find anything that just says fit to page

1:11so that's a

1:11little bit frustrating. The other thing you

1:13could do and I used to actually prefer

1:14doing this is

1:15downloading the pdf, selecting an

1:17unspecified paper size, then printing that

1:20because essentially that

1:21meant that the pdf you got was the highest

1:23resolution. This is essentially going to

1:26downscale

1:26whatever you're looking at to fit the paper

1:29size so it's sometimes going to be the less

1:31detailed

1:32thing to get. However if you print a pdf

1:34you've always got the capability to blow it

1:37up or make

1:37it smaller or make it larger however you

1:39like in whatever software you then use that

1:41pdf in.

1:42So that's something just to bear in mind

1:44but nonetheless this is pretty good. When

1:46you're

1:46done setting all of this up you can just

1:48hit print. I've actually got a print

1:50example just

1:51right here so now it's much much easier to

1:52print in Tableau Server and Tableau Cloud.

1:54I don't know who prints documents but if

1:56you're making packs sometimes these can

1:59sort of

1:59form the basis of those packs. People do

2:01things like report bursting to get these

2:03out

2:04and then send that out as like physical

2:05documents which is a bit of a weird thing

2:07to do in a digital

2:08application but nonetheless that's

2:10something that people ask. That's pretty

2:12much it, there's not much

2:13more to show and this is a feature that

2:15should have been here a long long time ago
