The Breakdown
  1. Create a bin to group values 0:08

    Right-click the continuous measure you want to look at the distribution of and create a bin, which groups its values into buckets of a size you choose (roughly five, in this case).

  2. Drag the bin onto columns for the histogram 0:31

    Drag the new bin field onto columns alongside a count of records and you get a working histogram straight away, showing how values sit across the buckets.

  3. Convert a continuous date field to discrete before filtering to one value 1:01

    A continuous field on filters only lets you select ranges, not individual values. You must convert it to discrete first if you want to filter down to a single year rather than a span of years.

  4. Add a second bin on colour for context 1:22

    Create another bin on a related measure (adult mortality, bucketed in 50s) and drop it onto colour rather than building a second chart. This overlays a second variable onto the same histogram so you can see how it relates to the distribution you're already looking at.

  5. Move the filter onto Pages to animate the story 2:01

    Once you have a working filter (the discrete year, in this case), drag it onto the Pages shelf instead of Filters. Hitting play then animates the histogram across each value, turning a static chart into a moving data story.

Worth Knowing
  • Bin size is a judgement call - the video buckets life expectancy in fives and mortality in fifties because that grouping made sense for the scale of each measure, not because of a fixed rule.
  • Filtering to a single value only works once the field is discrete; leaving it continuous restricts you to range-based filtering.
