Get free access to my Tableau Course on LinkedIn Learning | Tableau Course
I've finally made a proper Tableau course, and here's why LinkedIn Learning was the right home for it.
- My YouTube content isn't going anywhere, with more planned for Snowflake, Alteryx and dbt alongside Tableau.
- LinkedIn Learning suits enterprise learners because LinkedIn is rarely blocked at work and is bundled with LinkedIn Premium, unlike YouTube which is often blocked and full of distractions.
- You can watch the course free via a 30-day LinkedIn Learning trial, or through a limited-time free access link in the pinned comment and announcement post.
- The course is one hour 15 minutes, fully scripted into short videos covering every part of the Tableau platform, not just dashboard building in Desktop.
- It's structured in three sections: the core platform, enhancing the platform (data management, APIs, embedded analytics, Tableau Exchange) and business use cases plus Tableau Blueprint.
0:00Hey, it's Tim here. In today's video, I am
0:01so pleased to share that I now have a
0:04course
0:04available on LinkedIn Learning. To find out
0:07more about this, let's get started.
0:09Now with any announcement like this,
0:11obviously there's a ton of questions.
0:12My YouTube content is absolutely going
0:15nowhere. This is going to stay here. I'm
0:17still going to
0:17be doing my Tableau explainers. I'm still
0:19going to be doing my new feature releases.
0:21And I have
0:22so much more planned for Snowflake, Altrix
0:25and DBT as we move throughout the future.
0:27Now, one of the challenges though is that
0:30people have kept on asking me for courses
0:32and I've tried my best to try and make
0:34parts of YouTube work like a course. If you
0:37go and check
0:37out my playlist tabs, you'll see that I've
0:39even re-termed some of those topics as
0:41courses.
0:42If you actually go to my Tableau prep
0:44playlist, that is in effect a course, but
0:46for whatever
0:47reason, people don't quite see YouTube as a
0:49course platform. And there's actually a
0:50good reason
0:51behind that. The first one is that YouTube
0:53is actually blocked in most enterprise
0:55situations.
0:55So you can't easily recommend a YouTube
0:57playlist as a learning resource because in
1:00most cases,
1:00YouTube and/or Google platforms are
1:02entirely blocked. The other thing is that
1:04once you're
1:05on YouTube, you constantly face
1:06distractions from pretty much every other
1:08hobby that's going to be
1:09way more interesting than analytics. So
1:11once you start watching something on
1:13YouTube in a playlist,
1:14it's very easy to get distracted and be
1:15sort of sent somewhere else. That's why the
1:17majority of
1:18the people who find my videos actually find
1:20it through search on YouTube or they find
1:22it
1:22through search on Google. Once they have a
1:24problem, they'll search for it, then find
1:26my video,
1:27watch that one video, find the help they
1:29need and go on to the next one. They don't
1:31typically have
1:31a need to then watch an entire playlist on
1:34functions or an entire playlist on Tableau
1:36prep.
1:37The other thing is that when you start to
1:39think about learning platforms, sometimes
1:41the incentives
1:42that are linked to them, the business
1:44incentives, don't necessarily encourage
1:47good practice when it
1:48comes to learning. A popular platform that
1:50you probably all know about is Udemy. I
1:51actually
1:52evaluated putting a course on Udemy and the
1:54problem there is it's actually quite easy
1:56to
1:56put a course on Udemy. You can pretty much
1:59just get started. Anyone can start the
2:00process. You
2:01can go through the validation process with
2:03them and as long as you're good at making
2:04content,
2:05you can get your course on Udemy, no
2:07problem. That said, the mechanisms for Ud
2:10emy really
2:11put a lot of pressure on the user to really
2:13follow through with that sort of desire to
2:16learn
2:16and the platform itself doesn't frequently
2:19nudge you. It's got a few mechanisms that
2:22can do that.
2:22It's got reminders, you can set up a
2:24schedule, you can set up learning slots and
2:26then it can remind
2:26you during those slots. But in reality,
2:28once you've purchased the course, it's your
2:31course and they
2:31have your money, the instructor has your
2:33money and there's no sort of ongoing
2:35relationship.
2:36The other thing is that each course is one
2:38purchase. So if you want to learn a ton of
2:39things,
2:40it actually gets quite expensive. I think
2:42most people I know on Udemy have probably
2:44only ever
2:44max bought maybe 10, 15 courses. As soon as
2:47you start to go over that, it becomes quite
2:50untenable really and it actually starts to
2:51cost quite a lot of money.
2:52The other platforms, something like Courser
2:55a, those are really sort of dedicated
2:58platforms.
2:58Those are more for people who have a lot of
3:01time and a lot of sort of flexibility to go
3:03and learn
3:03something big. So I still wanted to find a
3:05platform that allowed you to make something
3:07you can consume over a lunch break,
3:09something you can consume in a short amount
3:11of time,
3:12and then be able to go and learn other
3:13things and move on. Because of course,
3:15analytics or Tableau
3:17is not a subject in and of itself. It lives
3:20in an ecosystem. So you also need to be
3:22able to learn
3:22other things without having to pin down
3:24exactly where you want to start your
3:26journey. And so
3:28LinkedIn learning became a really valuable
3:30proposition for two reasons.
3:32LinkedIn is not typically blocked in most
3:34organizations. In fact, a lot of
3:36organizations
3:37do support their staff to use LinkedIn for
3:39professional means. In fact, they actually
3:41even subsidize subscriptions for their
3:43staff to access content. And so when making
3:46a course for
3:46LinkedIn, understanding that LinkedIn
3:48learning comes free with a LinkedIn premium
3:50subscription
3:51was a really valuable thing because
3:53immediately you're attaching the value of
3:55the course to
3:56something that people already find valuable
3:58, which means if they're already motivated
4:00to learn or
4:01find a new job or find a new client or find
4:03a new customer, and they want to understand
4:05how Tableau
4:06fits in that ecosystem, they can just
4:08switch tabs, go ahead to LinkedIn learning,
4:11find out more about Tableau, understand how
4:13it works, possibly use one of my courses to
4:15do that,
4:16and then carry on with their day on
4:18LinkedIn learning. It's where people are
4:19working,
4:20it's where people are thinking. And so I
4:21thought I just thought that LinkedIn
4:23learning made a really,
4:24really good fit in that particular use case
4:25. The other thing is that maybe you're not
4:27interested
4:28in LinkedIn premium, and you just want to
4:29learn you just want that access to a
4:31learning platform.
4:32Well, LinkedIn learning actually gives you
4:34a free trial period. So if you want to
4:35watch my course
4:36for free, you absolutely can, you can just
4:38go ahead and hit the free trial on LinkedIn
4:41learning,
4:42you get 30 days free one month free. And
4:44then after that there's a monthly or yearly
4:46subscription
4:46you can sign up to. But here again, the
4:48value is this you get access to multiple
4:50pieces of content
4:51on LinkedIn. And I don't know if you've
4:53noticed, but LinkedIn has become a really
4:55powerful social
4:56platform, especially in the world of work.
4:58And so when making a course, I just thought
5:00this was such
5:00a good place to put the course, you can
5:02even have the course integrated in everyone
5:04's timeline to me
5:06at this moment in time with Twitter doing
5:08what it's doing, it felt like just a good
5:10thing. And of
5:10course, I didn't know that three months ago
5:12when I recorded the content, but I sort of
5:13had this hunch
5:14that hey, you know, social platforms are
5:16coming to the place where they're now also
5:18trying to host
5:19video content in lots of different ways.
5:22And if LinkedIn are making this move to
5:23have learning
5:24content alongside their social feed, which
5:26is what they've been doing for the last few
5:28months, then
5:29this is going to be a really good place for
5:31people who are focused on pushing their
5:33work career
5:33learning forward. So that's sort of one of
5:35the incentives now, I totally hear you, hey
5:38, I don't
5:39have money for LinkedIn premium
5:41subscription, I don't have money for a
5:43LinkedIn learning trial.
5:44Well, how can I access this course for free
5:46? Well, if you're watching this video, what
5:48you can do is
5:49you can hit the link that I've put in the
5:50comment, the first comment on this video
5:52will be pinned,
5:52if you go to my post sharing this course,
5:55the link in that post is actually going to
5:57give you limited
5:58access to this course for free. So everyone
6:01who watches my content here on YouTube can
6:03just do
6:03that go ahead, go to that post, click on
6:05that link and watch it for free. And you'll
6:07be able to access
6:08the course for a limited time. But here's
6:09the thing, the course is only one hour 15
6:11minutes. So
6:12it's an absolute no brainer. Go ahead, do
6:14that and discover what else is good on
6:16LinkedIn.
6:16Okay, so I've talked about why LinkedIn
6:18learning, let's talk a bit more about the
6:21course.
6:21It's titled everybody's introduction to
6:23Tableau. This is actually the post I shared
6:25today, I had to
6:26share this post, because this is the post I
6:28'm talking about, if you want to go and get
6:29free
6:30access, if you go ahead to my profile, you
6:32'll find this post, I've put a link directly
6:34to it.
6:34And if you go ahead and just click on this
6:36blue area, it takes you to the course
6:38itself.
6:38I'm going to pause there because this is
6:40the actual LinkedIn learning experience.
6:42Now,
6:42if you have a premium subscription to
6:44LinkedIn, you've already got this. If you
6:46have company access
6:47to LinkedIn, you've probably already got
6:49this as well. And if you've clicked that
6:51link from my
6:51profile, you should get a limited time
6:53access to watch this entire course for free
6:55. And so what
6:56does this course cover? Well, I wanted to
6:58create a course that didn't require people
7:00to have to down
7:01Tableau to understand the whole platform.
7:04And what I mean by the whole platform is
7:06literally
7:07every single part of the Tableau platform
7:09because a lot of tutorials and a lot of
7:10courses only focus
7:12on the desktop altering experience. However
7:14, the majority of people who use Tableau
7:16might never
7:17build a dashboard. And so for that reason,
7:19I really wanted to introduce people to the
7:21concept
7:22of what is Tableau. That's actually one of
7:24the most watched videos on my YouTube
7:25channel. And
7:26when I thought about this course, I was
7:28really speaking to that fact that most
7:30people just
7:30wanted to understand what the Tableau
7:32platform is. And so I've structured a
7:34course that I hope will
7:35solve that question. And in essence, there
7:38's an introduction which everyone can watch
7:39for free,
7:40actually, who does this course for the
7:42Tableau platform, all of that is included
7:44as part of the
7:45available sort of videos that you can get
7:47free regardless of whether you have a
7:49subscription or
7:50not. And as you go down, you can see that I
7:52have a video on each and every part of the
7:53platform,
7:54the videos, the longest video on this
7:56platform, the longest video on this course,
7:58I think is
7:59actually it's an eight minute video, which
8:01is also pretty tough for me, you see my
8:03YouTube videos,
8:04I struggle to keep things really succinct.
8:07So a lot of this course, in fact, all of
8:09the course
8:09was scripted, it was done to a very precise
8:12sort of timing to make sure that it's easy
8:15to follow,
8:15but it's also easy for you to absorb what's
8:17being discussed, there is no requirement
8:19for you to do
8:20absolutely anything other than just to sit
8:21back, relax, watch, you can even listen on
8:24your phone,
8:24if that's something you can do. And then if
8:26you ever forget a particular part of the
8:29platform,
8:29you can always come back to this and just
8:31watch the bit that you want to watch. Let's
8:32say you've
8:33heard of CRM analytics for the first time.
8:35And you just want a two minute reminder and
8:37what that is,
8:37you can go ahead, hit that button and watch
8:39the video if you want to know what the
8:41difference
8:41between Tableau server and Tableau cloud is
8:44. Again, I have a video on that. If you just
8:47want
8:47to know how to piece together the Tableau
8:49platform, well, at the very end, I've got
8:51some business use
8:52cases. And what I've done here is I've
8:54tried to bring users into the world that I
8:56live in, which
8:56is customers come to me and my I've tried
8:59to introduce users to the world that I live
9:02in,
9:03which is customers come to me at the
9:04information lab, and they ask, hey, I want
9:07to do this
9:08particular thing. How do I solve that
9:10problem. And so in this little section, I
9:12try and walk you
9:13through how to think through those problems
9:16based on the understanding of the entire
9:18course. And
9:18because you don't need to have any
9:20technical knowledge, you too can actually
9:21do this as well,
9:22because as long as you've watched the
9:24previous videos, you'll be able to piece
9:25together how
9:26the platform works. And if you don't, then
9:28I've got solutions as well to walk you
9:30through how to
9:30do that and also explain why those
9:32solutions come together. I've done that
9:34three times with three
9:35very different business use cases, even one
9:38that goes into API's and things like the
9:40Tableau
9:40Exchange as well. So go ahead and check out
9:43this entire course. It's broken down into
9:45three
9:45sections. The first one is the core
9:47platform, the main products of the Tableau
9:48platform.
9:49The second one is called enhancing the
9:51platform, which touches on data management,
9:53advanced management, API's, embedded
9:55analytics, the Tableau Exchange. And then
9:58at the very end,
9:58we've got a few more bits, which is the
10:00business use cases, but also the Tableau
10:02blueprint,
10:03which is actually a really important part
10:05of understanding how to piece together
10:07Tableau.
10:07So that's the course in a nutshell. And
10:09when you're done, you can actually go and
10:11watch some
10:11other fantastic courses on Tableau. If you
10:13just go to LinkedIn Learning and just
10:15search Tableau,
10:15you can go ahead and find a whole bunch of
10:18resources that are available here already
10:21for you to watch. So it sits alongside
10:23everything else that LinkedIn Learning has.
10:25And if you were just to type something as
10:27broad as analytics into this search by my
10:29word,
10:29you're going to be inundated with content
10:32you can watch in and amongst this great
10:34sort of sea
10:35of content around Tableau. So that's how
10:37the course works. Hopefully you find that
10:39useful.
10:39Hopefully you find this guide useful. I
10:41just wanted to sort of give you a very
10:42brief guide
10:43as to how to get stuck in. And the other
10:45thing to bear in mind is I'm not immune to
10:47feedback.
10:47Just because we're on LinkedIn Learning
10:49doesn't mean that your feedback matters
10:51less. Doesn't mean
10:52that, you know, I don't go through the
10:53quality assurance process that I would
10:54normally go through
10:55for my own content. In fact, it matters
10:57even more. So if you've got feedback or you
10:59've got questions
11:00that you want answered, what you can do as
11:02you're going throughout the course, if I
11:03just go back a
11:04few pages, you can actually ask questions.
11:07So you can ask, you know, questions and I'm
11:09actually
11:09available to answer them. And the best
11:11thing here is that this is all using
11:12LinkedIn. So you can see
11:14my profile here on LinkedIn, I can go and
11:16answer the questions. And there's something
11:19really nice
11:19about that, because you don't get that with
11:21many other learning platforms. It's
11:22actually easy to
11:23create a course. But it's hard to see the
11:25almost I'm going to say this provenance of
11:28someone's
11:28experience, like, what have they done? Are
11:30they used to making content? Are they used
11:32to teaching
11:32people how to use Tableau. And so you can
11:35kind of lean on some of that expertise long
11:37term,
11:37if you're engaging with their course in the
11:39platform where they also present themselves
11:41professionally. So that is an added benefit
11:43to doing everything here on LinkedIn. That
11:45's pretty
11:45much it for the course. I don't want to
11:47make this video any longer. The best thing
11:49to do, as always,
11:50is to get stuck in watch the course, let me
11:52know what you think. And don't forget the
11:54free ways you
11:54can access the course that I've titled
11:56throughout this video. Thanks for watching,
11:58and I'll see you
11:59in the next one.
