Augmented reality has quiet, everyday value; virtual reality is still a flashy, expensive niche looking for its killer app.
- AR overlays information onto the real world (Pokémon Go, phone camera face detection); VR replaces it entirely with an immersive environment, needing far more computational power
- Dedicated VR hardware (Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, HoloLens) exists because phone-based VR overheats and can't deliver the compelling experience the tech promises
- Devices like Magic Leap and the now-cancelled Intel Vaunt project images directly onto the retina rather than onto glass, giving always-sharp augmentation that only activates when you look at a specific cue
- The most convincing data use cases for AR are contextual - viewing shop-floor sales performance in situ, or spotting manufacturing bottlenecks right where they occur - not rotating 3D pie charts or scatterplots for novelty
- Policy and ethics are lagging badly behind the hardware, especially around always-on cameras, consent, and data walled gardens like Facebook restricting API access post-scandal
