0:00overview, profitability, all data
0:02visualization. In this video, Tableau Tim
0:04will show you how to edit
0:05the alternative text to help improve the
0:07accessibility of your dashboard. So what
0:09you just heard there was
0:11the voiceover on macOS narrating alt text
0:13that I'd added to this visualization. New
0:17in 23.2, you can
0:18actually edit the alt text for each
0:20visualization on the page. In this video, I
0:22'm going to show you
0:23how to do that. And I'm also going to show
0:25you how the voiceover works here on macOS.
0:28It's actually a
0:28new experience for me, I've never really
0:31spent time with the improved updated
0:33version of voiceover
0:34that Tableau have sort of been adding to
0:35accessibility features. So I actually
0:37learned quite a few things
0:38about sort of what it's able to communicate
0:39to the user. And you have to remember that
0:41voiceover is a
0:42tool that helps people with all sorts of
0:44abilities, but specifically those who are
0:46visually impaired
0:48to navigate the screen. So to edit the alt
0:50text, first, what you have to do is go and
0:52edit the
0:53visualization, I'll just go up here, select
0:55edit, and it will open up here in Web Edit,
0:57I'm doing this
0:58in the browser rather than Tableau desktop,
0:59I think it's just easier to do. And because
1:01the change is
1:02going to work in the browser, this is the
1:04best place to sort of test this. Now you
1:06can see that
1:06each chart is selectable as normal, it's
1:08sort of nothing new at all. In a previous
1:10video, I covered
1:11something new called the data guide. The
1:14data guide is this little tab arrow here at
1:16the right
1:16top right hand side. And when you open it,
1:18you get a bunch of information. Now what I
1:20did is actually
1:21put that description you heard in the title
1:24, as well as in the accessibility. But if
1:26you go here,
1:27and you'll see this option here, this one
1:29right here that says edit alt text, when
1:31you click on
1:31that, you actually get a little pop up, and
1:33you're able to update this text. And you
1:35can see here,
1:35this is where I actually added the alt text
1:37. And that's what Tableau was reading. And
1:39so
1:39Tableau is able to do voiceover, not just
1:42on the title of the chart, but also this
1:45specific alt
1:46text. So what you can do is you can
1:47actually edit this to describe what the
1:49chart is actually
1:50communicating. But you have to bear in mind
1:52that obviously, the chart isn't intractable
1:54, the alt
1:55text doesn't sort of change with variables
1:57as you interact with it. So although the
1:58chart might be
1:59intractable, sorry, these alt text will
2:02stay the same. Now, what is also really
2:04neat is that the
2:05alt text is sort of done for you if you don
2:07't do anything. So if I go to this chart
2:09here,
2:09I haven't edited this, and I go to edit the
2:11alt text, you'll see that there's actually
2:13already
2:13alt text there. And it just simply is
2:15communicating what the chart is an arrow
2:17chart of month of order
2:18date sales. And this is metadata that's
2:20always been available inside of Tableau. In
2:23fact, if you
2:24go in into a specific sheet, let's just go
2:26into this. I'm not sure if this will work
2:28in the
2:28browser. But if I hit Command E, it's not
2:30going to work here, because I think the
2:32browser is sort of
2:33overtaking the shortcut. So let me try
2:35option A, it's not going to work. But there
2:36's a shortcut on
2:37Windows and Mac Command E, Ctrl E on
2:39desktop, that allows you to pop up this
2:42information page. And
2:43this metadata is exactly the same as what's
2:44populating here. And so that's really,
2:46really
2:47nice to see. So it's a really good feature.
2:49And let me just show you how I enabled
2:51voiceover here
2:52on Mac and Windows is going to be slightly
2:53different. I don't have a Windows machine
2:55with
2:55me to show you that. But to just sort of
2:57give you an idea of what the experience is
3:00like on Mac OS,
3:01you just go to the accessibility settings.
3:03And there's an option to select voiceover.
3:05Now,
3:05something you have to bear in mind is I
3:08have a download a specific audio file that
3:11allows the
3:11voiceover quality to be a little bit better
3:13than the default setup. I do this because
3:15Siri actually
3:16works better if you do this. And so if I go
3:21and enable this, voiceover speaks
3:24descriptions of
3:25items on the screen and can be used to
3:27control the computer using only your
3:28keyboard. So that's
3:30if you already know how to use voiceover,
3:33press the V key now if you want to learn
3:35how to use
3:35voiceover on system settings, voiceover
3:38window table accessibility selected has
3:40keyboard focus.
3:42So I currently on a table to enter this
3:44table press Ctrl Option Shift down arrow.
3:46You can tell I'm an absolute need at this.
3:49I press the V key because I that voice you
3:52heard initially was the default sound and
3:54then the male sound you had afterwards was
3:56the customized
3:57sound that I've downloaded. And so now if I
3:59every time I hover over something, the
4:01voiceover is
4:02going to speak so I'm going to talk as
4:03little as I possibly can either show you
4:05how this works.

4:58You are currently on a menu pop-up combo

5:05slash to bring up the more content menu
5:07new features new features new features
5:10voiceover off. And so I stopped it there
5:13because what it's
5:14essentially doing is talking through the
5:16entire screen and there's a couple of
5:17things going on.
5:18I'm using a browser called Arc and the
5:20thing Arc's accessibility features aren't
5:22quite dialed in.
5:24So what it was sort of sending to the
5:25screen reader was information about the tab
5:28that I was on
5:29hence it was saying new features new
5:30features new features because I actually do
5:32have
5:32another browser page saying new features.
5:34The other thing is you'll notice that I was
5:36navigating using
5:37the tab and as I went to different sections
5:38of the visit was telling me what they were
5:40when I stopped on that section it gave me a
5:42bit more context as to you know what I
5:44could do with
5:44it and I can essentially just use the
5:46keyboard to browse the whole experience. So
5:47the voiceover
5:48capability is actually it's actually quite
5:51advanced in my opinion I don't know how to
5:53sort
5:53of compare this to you know other other
5:55experiences but it's more than what I was
5:58expecting is
5:58essentially what I'm trying to say. I didn
6:00't think the the voiceover and the
6:02accessibility sort of
6:04pairing would cover as much as it does and
6:06I think part of that is obviously the
6:08operating system
6:08doing a lot of the heavy lifting doing some
6:10screen reading probably on device but then
6:13the other half
6:13of that is the browser and Tableau building
6:16this application to serve up that
6:18information. Now what
6:19was interesting is here I'm in the viz and
6:21if I just go back out of this now we know
6:24of all text
6:24typically in the context of images and so
6:26what I did do is I did try and see well hey
6:28does Tableau
6:29serve these as images to the browser and so
6:32I've downloaded a couple of all text check
6:34ers and you'll
6:35see that if I just bring them into view and
6:37let's just enable this one for example you
6:40can see that
6:41it highlights all the all text images but
6:42it doesn't highlight the chart so Tableau
6:44is not
6:45serving these charts as images so the all
6:47text sort of finder can find it but these
6:49other images
6:50are actually there. If I do try and select
6:53some of these you can see here there's
6:55there is a
6:55description of an SVG here and I think it's
6:58just a little bit sort of hard to you know
7:00really narrow
7:01down what exactly this is I'm not sure if
7:02this is the actual visualization or if it's
7:04something else
7:05I think it could be just a graphical icon
7:07in the background or something but in
7:08essence I tried a
7:09couple of you know all text readers if I go
7:12to this next one here it's just this this
7:14browser is
7:15really buggy I have to keep I have to it's
7:18kind of like chrome but it's not this this
7:21this specific
7:21old text fire is not firing when I'm screen
7:23recording I think this is what the issue I
7:25had
7:26before and I couldn't get it to work then
7:27it worked and it I wasn't recording at that
7:29time so
7:30I think that must be it but in essence it's
7:32not serving up images it's serving up
7:34information to
7:34screen readers and I think this is a really
7:37nice feature set I need to do way more on
7:39accessibility
7:39and how tableau works with accessibility
7:42you can see I was an absolute noob I didn't
7:44know what to
7:45expect and I was probably quite impatient
7:47because I'm obviously reading the screen
7:50visually rather
7:50than waiting to hear the prompts as I
7:52should be if I was using the voiceover and
7:54as intended but
7:55nonetheless I think this is a great step
7:58forward and there's going to be lots more
8:00that I'll
8:00hopefully do in the near future covering
8:02accessibility I'll hopefully get someone on
8:04board to kind of show me the ropes show me
8:06how it works and share that experience with
8:08you and
8:09maybe what we'll do is we'll do an entire
8:12dashboard browsing experience you know sim
8:15ulating
8:15a voiceover in its entirety so going to the
8:18dashboard going to not even going to
8:19dashboard
8:20going to online.tableau.com logging into
8:23tableau cloud going all the way through
8:25finding the vis we
8:26want and using that so I think that's a
8:28pretty important thing to try to be able to
8:30really talk
8:31about the accessibility features that table
8:33au have implemented in the last few years
8:36apparently
8:36fantastical has terminated unexpectedly
8:39maybe just got too excited about the
8:41features but
8:41that's pretty much it for this video I'll
8:43catch you in the next one
8:44you
