Drag and drop headers: New in Tableau 2021.1

A nice quality of life improvement for web edit.

You can now drag and drop headers directly in the browser when web editing in Tableau 2021.1
You need the right permissions or licence type to see the Edit option in the top right of a published view
The drag separator behaves just like Tableau Desktop, working on column headers and row categories alike
Each incremental browser improvement moves Tableau closer to not needing the desktop version at all

0:00Hey, it's Tim here. This is a really quick

0:01video to show you a new feature available

0:04in the browser

0:04for Tableau Online and Tableau Server and

0:07that is the ability to drag and drop

0:08headers. I know it

0:09seems small but if you spend a lot of time

0:11in the browser using WebEdit or using the

0:14creative

0:14features there then you're going to

0:16appreciate this. So let's go ahead into a

0:18dashboard. I'll

0:18click on the Superstore dashboard and I'll

0:20go to this product view because I know this

0:22has a table

0:22that I'm going to be able to use. Once it's

0:24loaded up, if you don't have the correct

0:26permissions you

0:27won't see the option to edit here on the

0:29top right hand side. So I'm looking at this

0:32edit option

0:32right here. So if you can't see that, that

0:34means you don't have permissions to edit

0:36and so ask for

0:37permissions to be able to edit or get the

0:39right license type in order to do that. If

0:41you click

0:42on edit though, it opens up this view as

0:44pretty much an editable view, very similar

0:47to Tableau

0:47desktop and you can now see that I have

0:49access to this particular sheet where I

0:51have these tables.

0:52So let's go in here so we just have the

0:54sheet in the visualization and so the new

0:56feature in 2021.1

0:58is essentially you can do this. Let's say

1:00you wanted to sort these in a slightly

1:01different

1:02order. You can just click and drag the

1:04months and you see you get that separator

1:06that we're used to

1:06getting in desktop. So I can sort of put

1:08July back in the wrong place and I can drag

1:11this and put this

1:12over here as well and it works with pretty

1:13much any header. You can see here I'm doing

1:15it on the dates

1:16at the top but I can also do it here for

1:18these categories here on the left. So if I

1:20drag furniture

1:21down you can see I get that separator again

1:23and if I drag it to the bottom that means

1:25this item will

1:25go to the bottom and if I drag it in

1:27between office supplies and technology that

1:29's where it's going to

1:30end up and you can see there that that

1:31change is done and it's changed very very

1:33quickly.

1:34So yeah that's it there's not much new to

1:36that. It's a pretty small quality of life

1:38improvement

1:38but each of these are things that you'd

1:41expect when you come from Tableau desktop

1:43to the browser

1:44and so whilst it might not seem like a big

1:46deal each and every one of these increments

1:48means we're

1:48getting closer and closer to a world where

1:50you no longer need the desktop version and

1:52everything is

1:53working just as you'd expect in the browser
