0:00In 2021, the Tableau server and Tableau
0:02online search experience has been massively
0:04enhanced.
0:05Previously, when you use the search
0:06function, it was actually quite difficult
0:07to find what you're
0:08looking for. But now it's super easy. Just
0:10to show you how this works, I'll head over
0:12to the top right
0:12hand side, and I'll just enter the term "
0:14superstore". Let's just start with the
0:17generic workbook that
0:19everyone has. Now, if I go ahead and type
0:21that, what is really nice about this search
0:23is that
0:23there's a couple of changes to the way the
0:25results come back to you. The first one is,
0:28of course,
0:28the most obvious one, which is you get a
0:30nice filter pane here at the top. So you
0:31can filter
0:32down your search results based on what
0:34exactly you're looking for. You've got the
0:36content type
0:36available here. You've also got the owner,
0:38so you can filter it to yourself. And you
0:40can also now
0:41search based on when it was last modified.
0:43So if you want to see only things that have
0:44been modified
0:45in the last seven days, they immediately
0:47come up just like that. Really, really nice
0:49touch,
0:49sort of really get to what you need. The
0:51other thing is that the results are broken
0:53down in terms
0:54of content types. At the top here, you can
0:56see the views, but as I scroll down, you
0:57see workbooks,
0:58you see data sources, flows, tables,
1:00databases, and files. Now, in this
1:03particular search,
1:04I haven't got any metrics. So if I go ahead
1:06and just clear the search and I just hit
1:08enter,
1:08this will actually search all content and
1:10return everything back. So now you can
1:12actually see all
1:12the different types of content and the sort
1:14of assumed hierarchy that's working here.
1:17And again,
1:17this is just really nice. This is a really
1:19nice sort of improvement. Now, the thing to
1:21bear in
1:21mind is that search and explore are
1:23slightly different tools. Search is, you
1:25know, like a
1:26search engine, you go in and type something
1:28that you're looking for. And it's very
1:29specific.
1:30Explore is designed more for browsing. So
1:32don't confuse those two search and explore
1:34two very
1:35different things, you're still going to get
1:37the most I think out of searching for
1:38content,
1:38because then you'll find things that you're
1:40looking for a little bit quickly. Now, the
1:43other thing that's really nice about the
1:44search function, you just go ahead and
1:46search my surname
1:47here, I'm going to deliberately mistype my
1:49surname, and just see what happens. And
1:52what it does is it
1:53uses a system based on token matching,
1:55essentially, it assigns a score or a token
1:58to every single word.
1:59And then on top of that, it also does
2:01something else called fuzzy matching. So if
2:03you miss type
2:04a name, or you miss type a word, it's still
2:06generally going to try and find the closest
2:08possible match that particular phrase, even
2:10though I've typed in my name incorrectly,
2:12it's still savvy enough to bring back all
2:14my content. Now, it's brought down 239
2:17results
2:18compared to 460. I am the author of
2:20everything on this server. So it's
2:22obviously using some sort of
2:23criteria to filter down to this. And I
2:25believe this is based on views. So it's
2:27going to look
2:28at which workbooks have the most views, but
2:30also try and give preference to things that
2:32have been
2:32most recently modified. So that's another
2:35really nice touch. The fuzzy matching works
2:37both for
2:37terms and names. But if you wanted to, you
2:39could just search content, for example, if
2:42I just search
2:42Tim McGuinnah here, you can actually just
2:44go ahead and type an author straight into
2:45the top and it
2:46will find it on top of also being able to
2:48do something like this, which is just a
2:50standard
2:51sort of author filter. And you can go ahead
2:53and say, look, which of the workbooks that
2:55Tim has
2:56modified in the last seven days, you can
2:58see there's just one. And so this is a
3:00really nice way
3:01of just drilling down into different things
3:03. Now, something you might notice is if you
3:05filter down
3:06to one particular content type, it actually
3:08gives you this sorting criteria over on the
3:10right hand
3:10side. And once you're there, you can
3:12obviously sort by a particular thing in
3:13terms of instead
3:14of searching by relevance, you can sort it
3:16by popularity, just changing the weighting
3:18of the
3:18different values. That's it's a really nice
3:20touch. I really like this new interface. It
3:22's a little
3:23bit faster. There's a couple of other sort
3:24of touches you really can't see here
3:26because
3:26I've got such a very small data set. But
3:29maybe if I do this, if I just select all
3:31content and I
3:33just go back and I just clear the search
3:35here, just bring back everything. What you
3:37'll see is
3:38as I scroll down, it actually progressively
3:40loads more content. But because here I've
3:42got such
3:42little content, you actually can't see it
3:44all. Let's go back just to workbooks. And
3:46let's see
3:47if we can see this behavior as we scroll
3:48down, you can just see that last button bit
3:51here, scroll and
3:52add that's supposed to improve speed. So
3:54essentially, it's it's called lazy loading
3:56or
3:57progressive loading, depending on you know,
3:58which school of thought you come from. But
4:00that's again,
4:01going to speed up the capability of the web
4:03page to the initial results late fast. And
4:06as you
4:06scroll as you're telling it that you're not
4:08finding what you're looking for, it's
4:09loading
4:09more and more context based on the criteria
4:12that you've set. So this is going to be one
4:14of those
4:14things where you don't really notice the
4:16change until it returns exactly what you're
4:18looking for.
4:19And straight away, I hope this is something
4:21that people find useful. It's one of those
4:24things that
4:24everyone gets for free. So everyone who
4:26even doesn't realize it's a new feature
4:28will get this
4:29benefit immediately. So I think this is
4:30actually probably one of the nicest
4:32features in 22.1.
4:34Because yeah, it will just improve your
4:35quality of life, especially if you're a
4:37tablet online or
4:37tablet server. And yeah, thanks for
