0:00Hey it's Tim here, I've got two minutes to
0:02show you how to build a bar chart and we're
0:04gonna add some flair because that's plenty
0:06of time.
0:07Let's grab our dimension subcategory put
0:08that on rows that will make the rows go
0:10from left
0:11to right.
0:12Let's grab the metric we're going to use
0:14for this bar chart we'll use quantity just
0:16to
0:16mix it up a little bit and there we go we
0:17have a bar chart.
0:18If you want to rotate this just go to the
0:20top and you'll see this icon press that and
0:23it will just rotate the charts.
0:25Notice what it does to do that is
0:26essentially swap what's on columns and rows
0:28so we'll do
0:28that manually here just to show you and it
0:31basically achieves the same result.
0:33Now we're going to add a bit of flair we've
0:35got plenty of time left let's copy this
0:36quantity
0:37filled and duplicate it.
0:38I'm going to hold command or control drag
0:41it across and you'll see we get two bar
0:43charts.
0:43With the second bar chart over here on the
0:45bottom left I want to make sure that this
0:47is a Gantt chart we're going to add a bit
0:48of flair so we're totally breaking the
0:50rules
0:50here but nonetheless once we've set that to
0:52a Gantt chart we're going to go to the
0:53first
0:54bar chart at the top and we're going to set
0:56that to bar rather than automatic.
0:58The reason this is is when we switch to a
1:00dual axis it will actually change the chart
1:02type on us if we tell tableau not to do
1:04that by setting it to a bar chart it will
1:06stay
1:06the same.
1:08Now we'll set this to a dual axis we'll
1:09take the second measure go down to the
1:11bottom select
1:12dual axis that will lay the two charts on
1:13top of each other but of course we can't
1:15see
1:16anything different because they're the same
1:18color so we'll go to the first bar chart
1:19here
1:20select the color and we'll set that to a
1:22much paler shade of blue and boom we've got
1:24a bar
1:24chart with a little bit of flair.
1:26Before we move on we just need to make sure
1:28we synchronize the axis you can't really
1:29see
1:29the difference here but unless we do that
1:32these two won't stay synchronized.
1:33The last thing to do is hide this axis on
1:35the right hand side we don't need that
1:36right
1:37click and go ahead and hide the header and
1:39boom we've got a bar chart with a bit of
1:42flair
1:42and of course this still works like any
1:45other bar chart you can sort it you can
1:47rotate it
1:47and I just think it generally looks a lot
1:49nicer.
