0:00Hey, it's Tim here in Tableau 2021.3 Table
0:03au have added the ability to animate the
0:05axes
0:06when you're visualizing in Tableau. Now
0:08this is a subtle change, it's actually an
0:10improvement to
0:11the animation features. The animations keep
0:13getting better and better. I love the way
0:15that
0:15this is sort of picking up pace. Let me
0:17show you how it works. I'm just going to
0:19build a simple
0:20chart. For the record, I'm using Superstore
0:22sales, people always ask, you know, what
0:24dashboard,
0:24what data source are you using? I'm always
0:27using one of these two here, EU, Superstore
0:29or Superstore,
0:30the American version. Go ahead and click on
0:32that. And that will get you here into Table
0:35au desktop.
0:35And then we're just going to drag sales
0:38onto rows, profits onto columns. And then I
0:40'm going to bring
0:41category onto color and then product name
0:43onto detail. What I've done there is I've
0:45built a
0:46scatterplot very quickly, I've got profit
0:48on columns, sales and rows. And by putting
0:50category
0:51on color, we get the different colors on
0:53the scatterplot and product name on detail
0:55gives us
0:55the level of detail. Essentially, each dot
0:58here represents a product. If I wanted to
1:00go down one
1:01additional level, I could add something
1:02else to break that down. But in this
1:04particular case,
1:05I'm going to leave this as is. Now in order
1:07to show you this, I actually need to make
1:09sure a couple of
1:10things are happening. Now, if you're using
1:12an older version of Tableau, you might not
1:15see this
1:15because for you, the animations are going
1:18to be disabled. So they essentially up
1:20until the previous
1:21version of Tableau, I'll put a link to that
1:23video here up until that version,
1:24essentially,
1:25animations were not on by default. So you
1:28can see here, for me, they're on by default
1:30for you,
1:31they might be off. So if they're off, you
1:33can just come to this option and toggle it
1:35on, go to
1:36format toggle it on, and you're going to be
1:37good once you've gone into the animations
1:39options that
1:40you can obviously change these presets if
1:42you wanted to be slow or fast. I'm going to
1:43set this
1:44to slow so we can see this effect happen a
1:46little bit better. And now we're pretty
1:48much good to go.
1:49The last thing I need to do is to put a
1:50filter on here to see it work. So I'm going
1:52to right click
1:52on category and select show filter. What
1:55that actually does when I do that very
1:56quickly is it
1:57automatically puts the category onto the
2:00filter Spain, and then enables the filter
2:02menu on the
2:02right hand side. So that's all done really,
2:04really quickly in one go. And now we can
2:06see the effects.
2:07If I'm going to deselect office supplies,
2:09you can see here that I've set it to slow.
2:10So you have
2:11like an accentuated animation here. And you
2:14can see the axis is animating here at the
2:16bottom. If
2:16you're not sure where I'm looking, the axis
2:19is this one, this is the one that's
2:20changing,
2:21we're not changing too many values here on
2:23this axis. So the one to really pay
2:25attention to is
2:26going to be this bottom one here. So let's
2:28have a look at that again. Let's deselect
2:30office supplies,
2:31and then reselect it. And you can see that
2:33that's changing. Now the reason this is
2:36good is because
2:36essentially in the past, sometimes you
2:39change a filter in your dashboard, and the
2:42axis just flips
2:43instantaneously. Let's go and disable the
2:45animation. So you can see what that
2:47actually looks
2:47like. So let's go to off. And let's go back
2:50. And now let's try the same thing again,
2:52you see the
2:52axis just flips. And actually, what happens
2:55is your eyes are focusing more on the dots
2:57on the screen,
2:59rather than the axis. So you're looking at
3:00the data points. And in sort of in your
3:02peripheral
3:02vision, you're not even clocking that the
3:04axis is changing. So you think something's
3:06happened to
3:07your data when in fact, no, the axis has
3:08changed. And actually, you should be you
3:10could be looking
3:10at a different context altogether. So that
3:12's why this feature is really, really good.
3:14It makes it
3:14easier for people to see and understand
3:16what's going on. And I think it's good for
3:18data viz best
3:19practice just to have this on because it's
3:21now communicating something it's
3:23communicating change,
3:24not just through the chart, but through the
3:26axis. That's pretty much it. There's not
3:28much more to
3:28say on that. If you haven't done so ready,
3:31check out the other videos on 2021.3 over
3:34on Tableau Tim
3:34calm, I've got a whole playlist there that
3:36you can check out all these features I'm
3:38adding to it over
3:39time, this is going to be a slightly
3:40different way of working, I'm going to add
3:42to the playlist over
3:43the next few days. So go check those out.
3:45And hopefully enjoy some of the other
3:46videos that
3:47I've got on my channel as well. Thanks for
3:51watching. I'll catch you in the next one.
