Feeds, and a window into the platforms

  • NewRSS is back. A master feed for everything, a separate feed for each platform, and one for the newsletter, all listed on a new /feeds page that explains how to follow a single slice instead of the lot.
  • New“Fresh from the source” now sits on every platform hub: the platform’s own latest news, releases and official YouTube videos, pulled in automatically so a hub is useful even before I have made something about it.
  • NewThe Drilldown got a proper home: a subscribe panel (email or LinkedIn), the latest issues up top, and a year-by-year archive.
  • BetterRedesigned the Platforms index as a grid of brand-coloured cards with each platform’s own texture, filterable by what the tool does (BI, data prep and ETL, or databases), with breakout cards for sub-tools like Tableau Prep and Power Query.
  • BetterPolished the Collections index to match: a post count on every card and a difficulty chip.
  • FixThe newsletter RSS feed now states it runs about three weeks behind the email, and points you to subscribe by email if you want it first.

Platform hubs, properly

  • NewTwo new hubs, dbt and Power BI, bringing the set to ten co-branded platform pages, each in the partner’s own colours.
  • New“Inside the platform” on every hub: a map of that platform’s real tools (for Tableau that is Desktop, Cloud, Prep, Pulse, Next and Public), each linking straight to my posts on it.
  • FixRecoloured ThoughtSpot to its near-black brand ink. The old orange was too close to the site’s own, so a ThoughtSpot page no longer reads as a just-tim one.
  • FixCorrected the Alteryx brand colour, and added dark-mode tweaks so near-black brands stay legible.

Writing in the open

  • NewDraft previews: a post can be written and reviewed privately, only showing up on the live site once it is ready.
  • BetterA safer way to grow the library. Hand-edited posts are now protected, so the automatic tools that pull in videos and view counts never overwrite something I have written by hand.

Search, and finishing touches

  • NewSite-wide search: a box in the top bar and a full search page, with filters by type and platform. It is instant and runs entirely in your browser, with no tracking.
  • BetterView counts moved off the cards to reduce clutter; on a post itself a small YouTube icon shows the count, with the detail on hover.
  • BetterPost cards now lead with read time, then watch time.
  • BetterBrought the search and platform pages in line with the latest design.

Numbers, and a sharper home page

  • NewPulled real YouTube view counts onto every video, shown next to the title. They also quietly help decide which posts get featured, so the popular work surfaces itself without manual tagging.
  • BetterReworked the top of the home page: a hero that leads with what I do today, the dark stats band (twelve years, 600-plus pieces, five-times Visionary, the Salesforce Golden Hoodie, 242k subscribers), and a row of platform shortcuts.
  • NewAdded Golden Analytics to the platform line-up.

A new shell: Posts, Collections and navigation

  • BetterRenamed Tutorials to Posts and Courses to Collections across the whole site, and rebuilt the navigation around a Platforms menu and The Drilldown newsletter.
  • BetterRebuilt the post page: a tidy eyebrow (type, platform, topics), a byline with read and watch time, a tabbed “Key takeaways / In this video” panel, and chapter headings you can tap to jump the video to that moment.
  • NewA settings gear in the top bar: switch between system, light and dark themes, adjust the background texture, and pick the background pattern. Your choices are remembered between visits.
  • NewA Featured row of three on the home page, plus a Shorts toggle (off by default) so the grid stays long-form unless you want the quick hits.
  • BetterFolded the old Social page into a fuller About, rebuilt as an alternating text-and-photo layout with the stats band up top.
  • BetterSwitched to a single, consistent line-icon set throughout.

The rebuild

  • NewMoved from Tableau Tim on Webflow to just-tim, rebuilt on Astro and deployed on Cloudflare Pages. Every piece, more than 600 of them, now lives in one editorial home.
  • NewA pipeline that turns a talk or screencast into a written post: it transcribes the video on my own machine, drafts the post, adds screenshots for screencasts or pull-quotes for talking-head pieces, and links every heading to the exact moment in the video.
  • BetterCleaned the whole library: removed duplicate posts, restored real publish dates from YouTube, and sorted Shorts from full-length videos.
  • NewA discovery layer for search engines and AI assistants: a sitemap, robots.txt, an llms.txt index, structured data and social preview tags.
  • NewRedirects from every old Webflow address, so nothing that is already linked or bookmarked breaks in the move.
