Use Tableau Public in the browser for FREE! New in tableau 2021.1
Tableau have brought the full power of Tableau to the browser for free — no one has an excuse not to learn Tableau now.
- Tableau Public WebEdit lets you build full vises, calculations and dashboards in the browser for free, with 10GB of compressed storage that you're unlikely to ever fill
- You can only connect to uploaded files (Excel, CSV) — no databases or cloud storage like Google Drive or OneDrive — and creating an extract gives better performance and unlocks certain calculations
- Number formatting lives in the marks pane dropdown rather than the usual right-click menu, which can trip up desktop users looking for the percentage option
- Ad blockers and browser extensions can interfere with the AWS CloudFront connection, causing issues like being unable to save workbooks
- There's no reliable draft autosave yet, so always save before closing the browser, and use the 'works with Tableau Public' filter when browsing extensions
- WebEdit comes to Tableau Public0:00
- Profiles, storage and hidden vises0:49

0:00Hey, it's Tim here. Today, Tableau have
0:02released a great new feature for Tableau
0:03Public. They've brought WebEdit to Tableau
0:06Public.
0:07This is absolutely huge because essentially
0:10you can now build data vises in the browser
0:12using the power of Tableau entirely for
0:15free.
0:16In this video, I'm going to show you how.
0:18One other thing, this is part of the 2021.1
0:20release.
0:21If you haven't checked out the videos that
0:22I have on the channel about that release,
0:25go check it out.
0:26The last thing to note here is this is the
0:28full power of Tableau through the browser.
0:31There are a couple of catches because it's
0:32a free product. I'll come to those in a bit
0:33.
0:34But essentially you can do everything you
0:35can do in the desktop version of Tableau
0:37Public in terms of building a vis, creating
0:40calculations.
0:41You can do pretty much all of that with
0:42just a couple of catches and I'll come to
0:44those when I go through the video.
0:46But it's all there entirely for free. Let's
0:48get stuck in.
0:49OK, so we are here in the browser. I'm
0:51essentially already on the Tableau Public
0:52homepage.
0:53You can see that I've got my email plugged
0:54in. This is just an email I use for Tableau
0:56Public.
0:57I don't ever check it. So don't try and
0:58send me a message here at all. I just get
1:00ignored entirely.
1:02But nonetheless, what we need to do is go
1:04to our profile. Now, if you haven't ever
1:06created a profile, make sure you just go
1:07ahead and create a profile here.
1:09Once you've done that, you have access to
1:11this capability.
1:13But if you don't need to build anything,
1:15you can just go in and browse Tableau
1:16Public without ever creating a vis.
1:19This is if you want to create the vises and
1:21publish things. That's what your profile is
1:23going to be for.
1:24You get 10GB of space and this is great.
1:26You will never run out of space really.
1:28I know people who've been publishing vises
1:29nearly every single week and have not run
1:32out of this space.
1:34Essentially because Tableau compresses the
1:35workbook and the data.
1:37So even your largest workbooks in terms of
1:39Tableau are going to be about 70 to 80MB.
1:43And if they're any bigger than that, there
1:45's something going wrong with how you've put
1:47your data into Tableau.
1:49So even something like a million row Excel
1:51file is not going to push anywhere close to
1:54that size 80MB.
1:56So it's really, really good. Get stuck in,
1:58create a profile and then you can go
2:00straight into the capabilities.
2:02I'm going to click on my profile. This will
2:03take me to essentially what I see as an
2:05author.
2:06So now that we're here, you can see that I
2:07've got a few vises.
2:09A couple of things to note. I've obviously
2:11hidden some visualisations. That's what
2:13these little icons are.
2:14And essentially all that means is I've
2:15built something and I have made it public.
2:17So if you want to learn how to use Tableau,
2:19but you don't want the whole world to see
2:20what you're doing, you can of course do
2:22this.
2:23Build your vis, make it hidden and when
2:24people come to your profile, they can't see
2:26this.
2:27So there's actually a little option here on
2:28the top right hand side where you can view
2:30your profile as what other people see.
2:33So if I go hit others, you can see that
2:34they only see my nice polished vises.
2:37It's a bit like Instagram. You only post
2:39your best photos and the not so good ones
2:41get chucked out.
2:42Except for here you don't have to delete
2:43anything. You can just keep your nice vises
2:45available to the public.
2:47Now the next thing is of course your
2:49profile. So you get a little bit of
2:51information.
2:52Now you can of course update as much of
2:54this or as little of this as you want, but
2:56that's essentially all this is.
2:58It's just like a profile set of information
2:59.
3:00Then you've got these section vises,
3:01followers, following and favourites.
3:04And this has always been part of Tableau
3:05Public. This is not new at all.
3:07What has been new is that they've improved
3:08the Tableau Public interface. Check out my
3:10other video on that.
3:12They've actually improved the search
3:13interface so you can find visualisations
3:15and authors a lot more easily.
3:17But the thing we're here to talk about
3:19today is actually this, create a vis.
3:22And the thing to note is that it is
3:23actually in beta.
3:25This is live and it's available for
3:27everyone to use, but it's in beta, which
3:30means Tableau is still developing and Table
3:31au is still working on this.
3:33The very last thing I will say about this
3:35is that I actually tried this earlier on
3:37today and I had a couple of issues.
3:39And I realised the issue was because I had
3:41an ad blocker enabled.
3:43And actually this system is talking to a
3:46system in AWS called CloudFront.
3:49And my ad blocker was actually recognising
3:51that as some sort of ad tracking database.
3:54Now I don't know what sort of tracking goes
3:55on here in terms of how they monitor it and
3:57how they use that.
3:59That's all going to be in terms and
4:00conditions.
4:01But just to note, if you do have something
4:03that sort of interferes with how objects
4:05load on the page, like a toolbar or
4:07anything like that,
4:08runs in the browser, runs in chromes, all
4:09these extensions, they can interfere with
4:11the performance here.
4:13So if you're having issues, just check that
4:14one of your extensions isn't messing this
4:16up.
4:17I had an issue where ad guard, my ad
4:18blocking extension, was actually stopping
4:21me from saving workbooks once they were
4:23done.
4:24So that's something to check out.
4:25But now all the sort of disclaimers are out
4:26there, we can get stuck into this feature.
4:29I'm going to hit create a viz, and I'm very
4:30familiar with this because this is the same
4:32capability we've had now for a while in
4:35Tableau Server and Tableau Online.
4:37And so when I click on this link, we're
4:39going to hopefully go to a new instance and
4:40it's going to allow us to start building a
4:42viz.
4:43So you can see here that I've clicked on
4:44that. It was a little bit buggy.
4:46I think I wasn't actually in the window.
4:48But again, these are bugs to be expected. I
4:50don't know exactly what was going on.
4:51The other thing to note is we only have the
4:53ability to connect to files.
4:55I think what will happen, I'm hoping will
4:57happen, is that they'll add more sources.
5:00I think the biggest sort of thing I'd love
5:02to see here is actually the addition of
5:04global data sources.
5:06Things like data sources from the World
5:07Health Organization, data sources from
5:10organizations such as UNICEF,
5:12organizations that put out data to the
5:13world so people can tell stories with data.
5:16I'd love to see those become native sources
5:18here so people don't have to go find them
5:20and clean them and pass them.
5:22The other thing to bear in mind is that you
5:25still can't yet connect to cloud data
5:27sources.
5:28And I'm talking about specifically things
5:30like Google Drive, Microsoft Office 365,
5:33OneDrive, Box,
5:34all those kind of file storage systems
5:35because that's where a lot of people do
5:37sometimes keep their flat files.
5:39So although it says files, what it really
5:42means is it wants you to upload data from
5:45your computer.
5:47So you can see here this little arrow. I
5:48drew the wrong annotation there.
5:49So you can see here it wants you to upload
5:51data from your machine.
5:53So I'm going to go ahead and hit upload and
5:55I'm going to bring in none other than Super
5:57store.
5:58So I've got this Excel file here. You can
6:00see it's a .xls.
6:01I think .scsv will also work. Any sort of
6:03standard file will typically work.
6:06The best way to think of these is that a
6:07tablet is limiting this so that you sort of
6:10don't start buying their paid products.
6:12So if you want to connect to a database,
6:13unfortunately you won't be able to do that.
6:15But if you just want to connect to an Excel
6:17file, a very simple file, just upload the
6:19file and then you'll have it appear here in
6:21the interface.
6:22Then what we can do is we can just start
6:23using Tableau as normal. I just dragged in
6:25orders into the view.
6:27You can see that it works exactly the same.
6:29What I am going to do is create an extract
6:30because this will make things a lot better.
6:33And if you've never used Tableau, generally
6:35what I'd say is just create an extract
6:37anyway
6:38because there's some calculations that will
6:39happen in the future that will be much
6:41easier.
6:42If A) it's an extract, they'll be much
6:43faster and also there are some calculations
6:46that can only be done with an extract.
6:48So if you're connecting to a file, you
6:49might as well create an extract because you
6:51don't need any sort of live connection
6:53and you're going to get better performance
6:54as a result.
6:55So that's basically my advice. Try and do
6:57that.
6:58And then now we've created an extract. You
6:59can see here that it's got this sort of
7:01completion time of 9.53
7:04which is when I'm recording this video here
7:05in the UK.
7:06And now I can go to Sheet 1. So let's go
7:08ahead to Sheet 1 and see how this works.
7:11And so you can see here that we have a very
7:13, very nice sort of setup.
7:15Now we get the exact same interface that we
7:17get in Tableau Desktop.
7:19So everything is exactly the same.
7:21A couple of tricks here though. What you
7:23can't do in Desktop is zoom out to
7:25essentially get a larger interface
7:28or zoom in, sorry, zoom out to get a
7:31smaller interface and zoom in to get this
7:35sort of much more spacious setup.
7:37And I could never read this or work like
7:39this but you do get the space.
7:41So it's a very good place to come and work
7:42on something that's supposed to be
7:44absolutely huge and sort of get away with
7:46it.
7:47Okay, so let me set it back to 100% so it's
7:49back to normal so you can see what's going
7:50on.
7:51Now I'm going to try and build something.
7:53You can do literally everything.
7:55I will say this though. Some of the
7:56features are there, they're just not in the
7:59usual place, especially if you're a desktop
8:01user.
8:02So let's go ahead and drag sales onto rows.
8:04Then what I will do is I'll bring my sub
8:05category and put it onto columns to build a
8:08very basic table.
8:09This is the classic demo basically in Table
8:12au. You build a bar chart, the next thing
8:14you do is you build a map
8:15and everyone's always amazed about how
8:17quick and easy it is to build a map.
8:19You just double click on the geographical
8:20field.
8:21Essentially Tableau knows the names of
8:23locations around the world over a certain
8:25population.
8:26So if you click on that field and it has
8:27those names, it just figures out where they
8:29are.
8:30In this case I clicked state and it built
8:32this map.
8:33If I want it to be a filled map I just go
8:34here to the marks pane, then I make it this
8:37map option and then boom.
8:39Instead of dots I get a map. Very, very
8:40simple.
8:41The last thing I will do is I'll put sales
8:43on color.
8:44That basically means that I'm coloring this
8:46map with my sales values and it's going to
8:48aggregate the sales
8:50and even give me a legend over here on the
8:52right hand side so you can see that it's
8:54very easy and flexible to work with.
8:56I will style this like I always style stuff
8:58in desktop so I'll click on this color,
9:00I'll give everything a white border just to
9:01create some separation between each of
9:03these states.
9:04And now that's starting to look a lot
9:06better for me.
9:07The last thing I'll do is I will hold
9:09command and I'll drag sales onto label.
9:12If you hold control on the windows it does
9:13the same thing, command on the mac and
9:16control on the windows.
9:18And see here you can basically see this is
9:20all set up, this is all very nice and good.
9:23I've got the numbers and now I can go to
9:24the next page.
9:25Now the last thing what I will do here is I
9:26'll build a table.
9:28Look how easy it is to build a table now.
9:30I think people are going to be using this
9:32to build tables every single day
9:35because this is probably the fastest way to
9:37build any sort of table that you need.
9:39So let's go ahead and do this.
9:41Let's maybe buy a category and then what I
9:43will do is I will bring in subcategory as
9:47well
9:48just to give us a little bit of hierarchy,
9:50a little bit of structure.
9:51Tableau understands dates so I can expand
9:53this date hierarchy and boom we've got a
9:55nice little table there.
9:57So that's a very basic set of stuff. I've
9:59built three very basic vises.
10:01You can of course carry on. ShowMe works
10:03just the same way.
10:04I know a lot of people rely on ShowMe.
10:07If you're using ShowMe every single day
10:09trust me you don't need to be using it.
10:11You shouldn't be using it.
10:12Check out my video on that topic as well
10:14where I cover why you shouldn't be using
10:16ShowMe
10:17and how to use ShowMe to stop using ShowMe
10:19essentially.
10:20So we've got three sheets here, we've built
10:22something very simple.
10:24Now the other thing is sometimes you want
10:26to do things like create a calculation.
10:28So let's go ahead and create another sheet
10:30and let's just go ahead and just see what
10:32the calculation window is like.
10:33So let's create a calculated field.
10:34You see we get this box and it's modal just
10:36like normal.
10:37I can click out of this window and it's
10:39still there.
10:40So let's go ahead and work with this.
10:43So I'm going to create the profit ratio
10:44calculation.
10:45So what I'll do is I'll say sum of profit.
10:49Now it will auto complete as well so I can
10:51just go ahead and select that there.
10:53And do that divided by sum of sales.
10:57And again that will also complete there and
11:00I can just close that off.
11:02Then we can call this profit ratio and go
11:05ahead and do that.
11:09Hit apply.
11:10And now that we've done that we've got our
11:11calculation just right here.
11:13It's just appeared on the left hand side.
11:15So we're pretty much done.
11:16We're going to hit OK.
11:17Now the real stinger with this one is how
11:19do you change that to a percentage?
11:21Because watch what happens when I bring
11:23this segment into rows and I paste it in.
11:26Okay we've got the consumer, corporate and
11:28so on and so forth.
11:30So now if I drag the percentage, it's
11:31supposed to be a percentage, but if I drag
11:33it in you can see it's 0.11548.
11:36Now for all of you desktop aficionados the
11:38first thing you're going to do is either
11:41right click on profit ratio and then go to
11:44find the formatting options.
11:46And you'll be like wait they're not there.
11:48This is exactly what I did earlier on today
11:50.
11:51I couldn't figure out what was going on.
11:53Full disclosure I knew I couldn't figure it
11:55out until I finally found it later on.
11:58I had to dig around some documentations to
11:59find out where it was.
12:01But here we have the options.
12:03It's not there.
12:04I right clicked on the interface.
12:05You'd only get the annotation marks there.
12:07So I was like where on earth is this?
12:09I couldn't even find the feature.
12:11And actually it's right here in the marks
12:13pane.
12:14And for everyone who's watching if you just
12:15go to the marks pane.
12:16This is the marks pane.
12:18And if I actually go here and click on this
12:20drop down you'll see that I do get the
12:22option to format the number here.
12:25And so when I click on that I'm actually
12:26then able to select percentage and now we
12:28're pretty much ready to go.
12:30So that's how you do formatting with
12:32numbers in web edit.
12:34It's very sort of easy to do.
12:35I just I should know that I just couldn't
12:37figure it out earlier on today.
12:39So there we have it.
12:40And if you're using show me of course this
12:41all works on the right hand side.
12:43You can still do a whole bunch of other
12:44things.
12:45But I'm not interested in that.
12:47I just wanted to basically create a
12:48calculation.
12:50Now what I just did there is I hit the X
12:52button and it's asking me to save the work
12:54book.
12:55So I'm actually going to save a copy.
12:57And it's asking me to save a copy because
12:59technically I haven't saved this anywhere.
13:02So I'm just going to call this new public
13:06test workbook.
13:09And hit save.
13:11Now that I've done that it's going to go
13:12ahead and save.
13:14Now this does take a little bit of time.
13:16If you've got an ad blocker it might block
13:18this.
13:19OK.
13:20And so you can see here it chucked me out
13:21of Tableau.
13:22I don't know what went on there.
13:24So let's go back to my profile and let's
13:25pray that it saved it.
13:27I really hope it saved it.
13:28I'd love to start again.
13:29There you go.
13:30There's the new public test workbook.
13:32Let's go ahead and view and see.
13:34I really hope it saved it.
13:36I hope it didn't sort of just trash it.
13:38There we go. It did save it.
13:39If I just go back and close this it kind of
13:41I think it just bugged out and it threw me
13:43out.
13:43But actually if I go back in as long as I
13:45hit save everything is still there.
13:47So sheet one, sheet two and sheet three.
13:50Now there's a catch here.
13:51Don't close your browser without forgetting
13:52to save this because I'm not convinced that
13:55they've actually enabled that sort of draft
13:56feature yet.
13:58And I think that's really important because
13:59people will accidentally close browser
14:01fields whilst using this.
14:03OK.
14:04So now that we've built this this next
14:05thing to ask is well how do I build a
14:06dashboard?
14:07So of course let's go ahead and do that.
14:09Let's hit this sort of icon here at the
14:10bottom.
14:11You see we've got four sheets.
14:12I'm just going to double click each and
14:13every one of them.
14:15That is a sort of quickest hackiest way to
14:17get everything in a visualization in a
14:19Tableau workbook sorry into view.
14:22And now we have all the visits.
14:24And then what I can do is I can start
14:25arranging them now that they're here.
14:27So this is not going to be the best visit
14:28ever.
14:29I barely build visits on Tableau Public.
14:31I build most of my visits for clients.
14:33So I'm just going to take this small sheet
14:35here this tiny little sheet here and put it
14:37underneath the legend over here on the
14:39right hand side.
14:40And then what I will do is I think the
14:42table the table needs more space.
14:45So really what I should do is I should
14:48really put this table this sort of not the
14:52table sorry this sort of bar chart should
14:55be on the right hand side of this map just
14:57like that.
14:58And then I can sort of better balance
15:00things out a little bit and I can drag this
15:02up a little bit.
15:04The width is not quite working out how I
15:06thought it would work out.
15:08So what I might do is I might just dump
15:09this sheet here.
15:11I will take this legend and what I will do
15:13is I'll make this a floating element so I
15:15can move this legend where I want.
15:17And I'll just put it here and next to that
15:19map because that's the legend that it
15:21belongs to.
15:22And then for this sheet here you probably
15:23wondering well how do I get it to just fit
15:25the width of this space.
15:27Well if you go to the top like top here of
15:29the toolbar you can just say fit width and
15:32it will kind of squeeze everything in so to
15:34make sure it fits.
15:35So there we go we have a basic viz here.
15:38You can add interactions of course all
15:39those capabilities are there.
15:41If I just hit on this little filter icon
15:43that will enable a quick action and that
15:45will basically allow me to bring some
15:47interactivity to this very very quickly.
15:49If I want to start clicking and dragging
15:50and interacting with stuff I can.
15:52But you also get the dashboard actions
15:54capability so if you want to do something
15:56yourself that's a little bit more bespoke.
15:59Go ahead add an action.
16:01We don't have filter action parameter
16:02actions here but I do know that Tableau
16:04have some extensions that are available for
16:06that.
16:07So let's go ahead and hit OK and we'll
16:08check out the extensions in a second.
16:11But that's very much sort of it that's the
16:12web edit capability here.
16:14We've built a dashboard we've done
16:15everything we need to do.
16:17I'm now going to go ahead and save it
16:18because I've already given it a name.
16:20It's now just going to go ahead and save on
16:22top of what I had before so it's not having
16:24asked me again what would you like to save
16:26it as.
16:27And it's not going to ask me to save a copy
16:28as it sort of termed it.
16:30So that's basically web edit in a nutshell.
16:33All the same capabilities of Tableau now
16:35available to you for free through Tableau
16:37Public in the browser.
16:39Nothing to install if you've got a slow
16:41laptop you don't have to buy a new one just
16:43to use Tableau Public.
16:45You can start using it today.
16:47Okay you can see that the workbook saved.
16:49Now one of the nice things is with the 2021
16:53.1 release they actually enabled some
16:56extensions.
16:58And if I go over here to the left hand side
17:00you'll see that there's this option here
17:02for extensions on the bottom left.
17:04And so it's sort of weird because these
17:05extension became public sort of very
17:07quickly.
17:08And they also updated the feature so that
17:10you could actually access this gallery in
17:12the product.
17:13But Tableau Public itself didn't make it to
17:15this sort of position.
17:17So down here on the bottom left you can see
17:18I've got an extension.
17:20I'm going to go ahead and make my dashboard
17:22a little bit bigger and just see what
17:23extensions we have.
17:25It might be that there are some extensions
17:26but they're not quite working.
17:28Things might be in beta.
17:30So let's go ahead I'm just going to drag an
17:31extension.
17:32I'm going to put it here in the middle and
17:34when we drop it in we get the extensions
17:36interface.
17:37And check this out.
17:38People have been building extensions for
17:41Tableau on the browser.
17:43So now not only does desktop have this
17:45capability but in the browser you can go
17:47ahead and take advantage of these.
17:49So if you want to do things with parameter
17:51actions, well look people have built a
17:53bunch of different sort of tools that you
17:55can use your parameter with.
17:57Most of them are with Tableau.
17:59So a quick what if, a single checkbox
18:00parameter, parameter actions, data driven
18:03parameters.
18:04All of these are actually available here.
18:06You could do something with vis formatting
18:08for example.
18:09Mark Jackson here has built a Trellis chart
18:11auto resize.
18:13And so there's so many sort of great little
18:15tools.
18:16If we go to custom new vis types here you
18:19can see that people have built extensions
18:21that will sort of let you build charts that
18:24are sort of you know,
18:25you know just not out of the box
18:27essentially.
18:29These are going to be absolutely great.
18:31So there's so many different extensions.
18:33I literally would get lost just going
18:34through this.
18:35I'll probably do another video going
18:36through some of my favorite top 10
18:38extensions to get to know.
18:40It's going to take a while to sort of get
18:41through this.
18:42So you know bear with me while I do that.
18:45But long story short there's a whole bunch
18:47of extensions to be aware of.
18:49Now the thing to be careful though is not
18:51all of them work with Tableau Public.
18:54So if you see here there's a little check
18:55box that says works with Tableau Public.
18:58So let's go ahead and check that.
19:00And when we do that it will also fill to
19:02this list.
19:03So now my list you'll see just a few
19:05extensions disappeared.
19:07So now if I go to all categories these are
19:08the ones that have been tested to work with
19:10Tableau Public.
19:12So it's actually a handful of extensions.
19:15Bar race is a really really good one.
19:17So let's go ahead and actually use this.
19:19Let's go ahead and select this and we'll
19:21add it to the dashboard.
19:22What I'd love to do is sort of see it on
19:24the sub category.
19:26So let's just put it in and see what it
19:28does.
19:29So we're waiting for the extension.
19:30The way I know that is over here on the
19:32bottom left it was actually saying waiting
19:34for an extension.
19:35So now that that's there it's basically
19:37asking me to add data.
19:39The image either needs a data source or
19:41some data items are missing.
19:44You can set this by selecting the configure
19:46option in the extensions edit tab.
19:48So let's go ahead into this little dot here
19:51.
19:51And I can configure it just there.
19:53So when that happens it opens yet another
19:55little sort of pop up.
19:57And now that we have this we have the
19:59interface where we can edit this stuff.
20:02So now what I will say is that extensions
20:05are going to be the wild wild west of Table
20:07au.
20:08Tableau has always been this great sort of
20:10safe place.
20:11But as soon as people start building stuff
20:13instead of Tableau what you have is
20:15different design languages,
20:17different ways of interpreting sort of
20:18standards.
20:19And so I can go ahead and select a works
20:21heet here.
20:22In this case I'm going to select sheet one
20:24as my data source.
20:26Because that is actually a bar chart so I'm
20:28assuming I can do whatever I need to with
20:29that.
20:30I don't have anything on colors.
20:32I'm essentially kind of already configuring
20:35what's going on here.
20:37There's not really much sort of to change.
20:40There's a lot of options for this one.
20:42So I'm just going to hit save and just hope
20:43that what I get out of the box is free.
20:45And there you go.
20:46It's basically rebuilt this chart.
20:48Now there's an upside and a downside to
20:50this.
20:51So let's go ahead and just start playing
20:52this stuff.
20:53You see it's basically cycling through the
20:55years and it's able to sort of figure
20:56things out.
20:57So if I hit play there it goes 2018, 2019
20:59and so on and so forth.
21:01If I go and configure that again I think I
21:04can maybe change this time frame that it
21:07animates to be something different.
21:10So let's go ahead and see if we can change
21:12that to be a little bit more granular so we
21:15can see the animation actually taking place
21:16.
21:17I'm not sure I actually can.
21:20Bar, race chart, chart items, chart values,
21:23dimensions.
21:25Yeah, no selection.
21:28What's going on here?
21:30I'm not really clear about how to sort of f
21:32iddle with this.
21:33But you get the idea.
21:35Extensions are going to basically allow you
21:36to do a lot of things that are quite
21:38difficult.
21:39You might not necessarily like how they're
21:40being done.
21:41So what I'd encourage you to do is before
21:43you sort of invest in an extension really
21:46test it.
21:46Really make sure you're happy with it.
21:48You can see that I got excited about that
21:49one and it didn't quite work out.
21:51But of course, you know, developers are
21:53going to be building on these.
21:55So don't take that example as like, you
21:57know, a standard example of what the
21:59developer is capable of.
22:01These things take time with millions of
22:03people using Tableau Public.
22:06It's also going to create bugs that people
22:07have never seen before.
22:10Because before these extensions ran in
22:11enterprise where the bugs probably didn't
22:12even get communicated.
22:14So this is going to be a tough time because
22:16extensions will have to start from a place
22:18where there isn't as much feedback
22:20available.
22:21And it will just take time for that
22:22feedback to trickle into people's workloads
22:25and developers to make those work.
22:27But it's good to know that Tableau do check
22:28these extensions.
22:30They are checked for security.
22:32And anything that's been validated to work
22:34with Tableau Public has probably gone
22:35through some sort of quality control as
22:37well.
22:38So this is really cool.
22:40You can go and start working with a whole
22:41bunch of extensions.
22:43Start doing some absolutely crazy things.
22:45An extension I think has made it into this.
22:48A semiotic hierarchy.
22:49I really like this one.
22:51This is one by Star Scheme.
22:52And it's actually a pretty advanced
22:55extension.
22:57It's not the kind of thing I can cover even
22:59in one video.
23:00Because it's really powerful.
23:02It uses the library, a D3 library.
23:04And it actually looks like Tableau.
23:06You can see they followed the styling and
23:08theming of Tableau itself.
23:10So if I go to Configure, it actually opens
23:12up this little tab.
23:14They've thought about their sort of
23:15interface design.
23:17And if you check this out as I load this up
23:19, you'll see that it actually looks and
23:20feels familiar.
23:21It's sort of had some deliberate sort of
23:23thought to it.
23:24And you can choose different sort of chart
23:26types.
23:27These would just take a lot of time and
23:30some really complex calculations to get
23:33them working.
23:35And they're not necessarily best practice.
23:38But if you want to build something
23:39beautiful and you sort of want something
23:40quick and easy out of the box, this is
23:42going to be it.
23:43I'm going to use Sheet 3 just to see if it
23:45can do anything with this because that's
23:47the one with the hierarchy.
23:49I think I'm going to try and use sub
23:50category and category as the hierarchy here.
23:53And see if there's anything we can do with
23:54the year hierarchy as well.
23:56It's kind of thinking about it.
23:58So let's try and see what happens here.
24:00Nothing's going to happen I think because
24:03number one, my ad block has probably kicked
24:04in.
24:05Or number two, it's just a bug.
24:07And again, this is going to happen.
24:09So I should really stop starting to show
24:11extensions on day one of a new feature
24:13because they will be buggy inevitably.
24:16But what I just want to do is highlight,
24:18look, there are extensions out there.
24:20Go in, get stuck in.
24:22Don't be overcritical of these things.
24:24They've only just come out.
24:26People have spent time building them and
24:27they have done it for free.
24:29In some cases, these extensions are paid.
24:31So no, send positive feedback.
24:33Send positive criticism so that people can
24:35make these things better.
24:37Don't just sort of dunk on them because
24:38they don't work on day one.
24:40So that's pretty much it from me.
24:42I think I've shown you all I can show you
24:43here.
24:44I'm going to hit close and see what happens
24:45.
24:46Is it going to ask me to save? Yes.
24:48It has a prompt there to make sure that I
24:49save everything.
24:50If I'd closed the browser unfortunately, it
24:51would have just closed.
24:52So let's go back and see my published vid.
24:55So this is the dashboard. It's a very ugly
24:56dashboard.
24:57I will keep this public on my profile so
24:59you can all see that it's there.
25:01It's not a testament of my skill or
25:02anything. I hope not.
25:04And now that's saved. Just give it a few
25:06more seconds.
25:08Try and fill the air while it does that.
25:10There you go. It's saved.
25:12And now it chucks me back to my profile.
25:14And I can tweak the vid, give it a title,
25:16blah, blah, blah.
25:19But I don't want to do any of that. I just
25:20want to view it in my profile.
25:21And there we have it.
25:23We have Tableau Public in the browser.
25:26And the best thing of all, it's free for
25:27everyone to use.
25:29So just go ahead, create your profile, get
25:30stuck in, start making vids.
25:32No one has an excuse now to learn, to not
25:34learn Tableau.
25:36In fact, I maybe might start using this
25:38myself so everyone can follow along
25:40and sort of find it easy to use.
25:42Okay. Thanks for watching.
25:44If you've enjoyed this video, you know what
25:45to do. Please subscribe.
25:47Share this with people who might find it
25:49useful.
25:50Let other people know about the goodness
25:51here.
25:52This is a really important feature.
25:54If you haven't checked out some of my other
25:55videos on Tableau 2021.1,
25:58check that out as well. I've got videos
25:59going back.
26:00Almost five releases now of Tableau
26:02covering all the key headline features as
26:04well.
26:04And last but not least, reach out.
26:06Let me know what you'd like to hear.
26:08Let me know what you'd like to see on the
26:09channel.
26:10And if you found this video useful, I'd
26:12really appreciate a like
26:13because it really helps get the content out
26:14to more people.
26:15Thanks for watching.
