0:00In previous versions of Tableau, if you
0:02wanted to view the data, you'd go to the
0:03data point you wanted to look at,
0:05select it, and then hit the View Data
0:07button and this is what you'd get.
0:09You'd get a table, which was actually
0:11pretty okay.
0:12You could see the detail, you had a summary
0:13view, and you had a more detailed view
0:16which showed you the underlying data point.
0:18However, in 22.1, Tableau have taken this
0:21to 11. Let's take a look.
0:23So if I click on Furniture and I go to the
0:25exact same point,
0:27this time when I click on View Data, I get
0:29the new improved View Data view.
0:32I don't know if that's the right term. View
0:34Data Interface, let's call it that instead.
0:36But nonetheless, you can see this is
0:38immediately so, so much better.
0:40The first thing I'll tell you though,
0:40rather than just looking nicer and looking
0:43more presentable,
0:44there's a couple of customizations you can
0:45make to this. You can actually change this
0:48so that when other users click on this,
0:49they see what you basically changed.
0:52So if I wanted to change the order in which
0:54these dimensions are appearing,
0:56I could select Category here and move it to
0:58the right hand side.
1:00And when the user downloads this data, as
1:02they can do as a CSV or as any other file
1:04type,
1:05it actually presents it in that same order.
1:08The other thing I can do is I can add
1:09detail to this. So if I'm missing a field,
1:12maybe I want to add another field to this.
1:13I can absolutely go in here, select Show
1:15Fields, and I can obviously select the
1:17field that's relevant.
1:18Because this view has everything in the
1:20data source, everything is available.
1:22But I can go ahead and actually remove
1:23things if I just want to make it super
1:25simple for the end user.
1:26I can just keep the fields that I want and
1:28that is going to be there.
1:30Now the other thing I can do is I can do
1:31some sorting.
1:32So let's say I want this to be sorted by a
1:34particular category or by a particular sub
1:36category.
1:37I can obviously just go to this little drop
1:39down here and I can move things left and
1:42right.
1:42But I can also sort this ascending or
1:44descending and you'll see that it sorts the
1:46entire data source
1:47using this particular order, which is a
1:48really, really, really nice touch.
1:51Now there is a little cog here at the
1:53bottom.
1:54And if we go and select that, you'll see
1:55that it also shows you the ability to show
1:57aliases.
1:58In some cases, if you're using aliases
2:00really heavily in your data source, that's
2:02actually going to be useful.
2:04So you'll be able to see those there. But
2:05in my particular case, I'm not seeing any
2:07aliases.
2:08So there's no problem here. I'm just using
2:09the default workbook inside of Tableau
2:12itself.
2:13Now the last thing I'll mention about this
2:14is this little area on the left hand side.
2:17What we're looking at here is the summary
2:19view.
2:20Now, if you've built a table with a data
2:21model, what you'll get as well as a summary
2:24view are the individual tables that have
2:27built that summary.
2:28So in this case, we're not using a data
2:29model view. We're just using the standard
2:31orders table.
2:32And you can see that it actually at a row
2:33level, this is the detailed version that we
2:35used to get in the previous version.
2:37But if you're using the data model, this
2:39would also show you any additional tables
2:42that have been brought together to form the
2:43summary.
2:44So you don't just get the summary, get the
2:46additional tables underneath it that have
2:48provided that capability.
2:50And just to show you that the CSV will
2:52observe the sorting, let's move the product
2:54name all the way to the right hand side.
2:56This time around, I use this little jump
2:58button that brings it all the way to the
3:00front.
3:01You can also do the same at the end. And
3:03let's go ahead and download that to my
3:04desktop.
3:05We'll call this version 2 because I've
3:07actually already downloaded this.
3:09Now that's on my desktop. Let me just open
3:10up the file on my desktop.
3:12You'll see that it's right there. I'll open
3:14this with Excel. Let's go ahead and do that
3:15quickly.
3:16Excel is not my default CSV opener here.
3:19And you can see the product name was indeed
3:21put to the very left hand side.
3:23So those Excel sheets, instead of having to
3:25get an extension to customize them, you can
3:27just do that straightaway in the view.
3:29So when you publish this up, the user will
3:31get a slightly limited view of this.
3:33It will be slightly different, but it will
3:34work really, really well.
3:36I've been told that this also supports
3:37accessibility requirements.
3:39So I'm not sure entirely what that means. I
3:42'll have to do a little bit of testing
3:43myself to validate that.
3:44But I believe screen readers should be able
3:45to navigate this view once it's up on the
3:48server and it's being viewed in an
3:50efficient way.
3:51Let me show you what that looks like. OK,
3:53we're here in the browser. I'm here in the
3:54view.
3:55I'm not actually looking at it as an editor
3:56. I'm just looking at it as an end user.
3:59If I go to furniture and I wait for that
4:01pop up to come up and I hit the table, you
4:03see that it actually pops up this new.
4:05It calls it like a hybrid window. But
4:06nonetheless, it's exactly the same.
4:09Essentially, they've both been built off
4:10the WebView. So no surprises here.
4:13I can, of course, customize this here and
4:14move this around as well, which is really,
4:16really nice to see.
4:17But notice I'm doing this as an end user. I
4:19'm not doing this as the author.
4:21So this is really, really nice. People are
4:23going to be able to customize this now.
4:25I believe that in terms of security, if you
4:27've got the ability to see summarized data,
4:29you'll only get the summary fees.
4:31And if you've got the ability to see the
4:33granular data, you'll obviously get the
4:35full data showing up here.
4:36So this should observe all the usual
4:37security requirements of Tableau Server.
4:40So just be sure to check that. Make sure
4:41you test that as a viewer, as an explorer
4:44and make sure everything sort of meets your
4:46requirements.
4:46But that's pretty much it. That's it for
4:47this new feature. Now, this is a small
4:49thing.
4:50It's a very sort of small thing, but it's
4:52amazing. It's actually a much, much, much
4:54nicer experience, especially as we move
4:57into the WebEdit world.
4:58And I expect this to improve over time. I'm
5:00aware that there might be some additional
5:02features added to this in the future.
5:04So that will be really, really interesting
5:05to see what Tableau comes up with.
5:07Everything that comes out with Tableau
5:08nowadays, it doesn't all come out in the
5:10first release.
5:11It always sort of takes two or three
5:12releases to sort of pan out. But here we
5:14are. This is it.
