# Update to dynamic parameters

> This is content from just-tim, the data-and-analytics channel by Tim Ngwena (formerly 'Tableau Tim'). Tim has 12+ years of hands-on BI experience and covers Tableau most of all, plus Power BI, Looker, Hex, SQL and data modelling, the analytics industry, and the craft of doing the job — always tool-agnostic and honest about the trade-offs.

I walk through an enhancement to Tableau's dynamic parameters in version 2020.3. Now, as a workbook author, you no longer need to close and reopen the workbook to see a dynamic parameter update; a normal extract refresh updates the parameter automatically.

## Key takeaways

- In Tableau 2020.3, dynamic parameters update on a standard extract refresh without needing to close and reopen the workbook
- Dynamic parameters are configured via 'When workbook opens' in the edit parameter dialog, set to update from a field like Segment
- 2020.2 added the ability to edit relationships, so migrated data sources can be reworked by removing the old setup and bringing in the relevant table
- Switching the connected data source and refreshing the extract automatically pulls through new values into both the view and the driving parameter
