# Tracking reference lines in Tableau Quick Tip

> This is content from just-tim, the data-and-analytics channel by Tim Ngwena (formerly 'Tableau Tim'). Tim has 12+ years of hands-on BI experience and covers Tableau most of all, plus Power BI, Looker, Hex, SQL and data modelling, the analytics industry, and the craft of doing the job — always tool-agnostic and honest about the trade-offs.

## Article

In the [most recent #makeovermonday](http://tableautim.com//tableau-makeover-monday-entry-presidential-race/), I used a technique where the reference line is used to track your mouse across multiple charts. This is a quick post highlighting how to do this. In short I’m using a reference line out of view with the recalculate setting left on. The net effect is that the reference line comes into view when you hover over the chart. To make the effect complete, I also use highlight actions to help highlight elements across charts.
